Three VHS tapes. Six Hours. One bored-ass kid. I watched this a stupid amount of times. I remember losing my set and scouring second-hand stores for another copy. This series made me want to be creative and I would daydream away in class about poison and gold and drowning in your own hair. Other kids had Lord of the Rings, and I had this- which isn’t sarcasm. This was far more important to me as a little girl than some crusty old dead guy’s ring ever was. As I grew up, gradually I had fewer opportunities to watch it, and I’m hoping to get a chance soon because I could use the inspiration.

I remember watching this when it aired on NBC in early 00. Over 14 million people tuned in to watch what unfolded. It felt like such a big and magical thing at the time. Gets better and better every time I watch it. This was my third time and I still couldn’t remember half of the stuff that happens because it’s so utterly inexplicable. It all kind of clicks once you realize it was directed by a duo consisting of a classical Shakespearean director and a guy who made several episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation. Perfect.

A cheeky, creative blend of fairy tales and fish-out-of-water adventure. Often cheesy, but self aware enough to run with it and stay well within its lane of light hearted fantasy. Clever, punny and endearing in equal measure; the good far outweighed the weak parts, although the Snow White part was a miss both in casting and plot wise. Wolf stole the show and Virginia became more endearing as the story progressed. All in all it was an unexpected joy to watch.

Didn’t realize how formatively this affected me as a 6/7 year old. Strange brew of Hallmark but make it NBC Y2K NYC brothers Grimm troll king named Relish. Perfect sick TV that I started in a literal fever and ended a few weeks later in a comedown.

An ambitious project that doesn’t know whether to be wink winky and cute like Shrek, grim and gritty like Del toro, or outright filthy and juvenile like a Family Guy sketch. We switch multiple times, sometimes in the same scene, for maximum whiplash. It would be better if they picked a tone and stuck with it, especially with how long this thing is. Also they did a racism Frollo would be proud of, which is a pretty disgusting realization. Dianne Wiest comes off the best.

I have no idea where to even begin with this campy, early 2000’s fever dream—the anthropomorphic pearl engagement ring?? the horrific CGI?! the sexy wolf who uses his tail as a euphemism for his dick?! (thank you max medina). and also might I add, a shockingly dark and complex mother-daughter relationship considering this is aimed at kids 8+?? anyway, this most definitely inspired like 99% of once upon a time lol.
