   Despite being the sixth (and hopefully final) installment of a franchise that hasn’t really been relevant since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Tim Miller’s competent but coma-inducing “Terminator: Dark Fate” has no reason to feel this far past its expiration date. In a studio age of intellectual property where nostalgia and innovation are tugging us so hard in either direction that it doesn’t seem to matter what happens right here, nothing this side of a “live-action” Disney remake could possibly be more “now” than an unsolicited $150 million sequel in which the present is literally reduced to a turf war between the past and the future.    Lots of good ideas here, Linda Hamilton’s performance is great, this is probably the most interesting (albeit underdeveloped) use for Arnold since T2…and yet the main character kinda fell to the wayside a bit, the villain was pretty forgettable, and the visuals reeked of generic CGI gray sludge. Best in the series since T3!

   For decades, The Terminator has been thought of as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s franchise. He’s the guy who appears in five out of the six movies to date — and the sixth one was so desperate to include him even though he was Governor of California at the time that they made a CGI Ahhnuld who could fight Christian Bale. What Terminator: Dark Fate makes clear is that while the Terminator may be Schwarzenegger’s signature role, he wasn’t the key ingredient that made these movies really work. It was Linda Hamilton.    Die gute Nachricht zuerst: Terminator: Dark Fate ist von allem Fortsetzungen seit Terminator 2 definitiv die handwerklich sauberste. Vergleichen mit Terminator 3 oder 5 sind Look, inszenatorische Leistung und Produktionswert definitiv eine Stufe aufgestiegen. Die schlechte Nachricht: viel mehr Gutes gibt es hier nicht zu berichten. Während der ersten Hälfte ist das hier einfach nur Terminator 2…einhalb. Nach einem durchaus eher überraschenden Opening, dass zwar direkt zum Einstieg massive Logikprobleme offenbart, immerhin aber nicht uninteressante Ansätze liefert, wird für die nächste Stunde praktisch jede einzelne Terminator-Checkbox abgehakt. Zwei Zeitreiseblasen, zwei Nackedeis, beide suchen Kleidung, eine Damsel in Distress, die wider Willen gerettet wird, während der Antagonist Dinge tötet. Alles wie gehabt.    Horrifically—like, HORRIFICALLY—directed, and with a script rife with the late-2010s schitck of overexplaining every plot development to avoid the ire of the CinemaSins crowd. But…I dunno. In a truly bleak and desperate year for all kinds of movies, I think I’ll take what I can get from franchise blockbusters. Linda Hamilton’s so much fun here that it’s all too clear how tragic her absence from movies has been. I’m very gay for Mackenzie Davis. And the film spends some time on classic cyborg “am I human???” shit that the series has never really bothered to make time for. That the new evil Terminator is better at acting friendly, making banter with civilians, and generally passing as a real human than the actually real human played by Davis is an interesting idea. Yeah I dunno folks. I had a good time. I’m gay. What do you want from me.

    A surprise preview screening. The Alamo and 20th Century Fox tricked us into watching this with a tired bait-and-switch. Such a lame gimmick. For over a decade, my dad had talked about how much he wanted to see T2 in a theater again. It’s one of his all-time favorites. Within minutes of our local Alamo’s announcement of this supposed T2 screening, I bought us tickets. That was a month ago. Tonight, after weeks of anticipation, we’re in the theater, stoked, ready to watch together this movie Dad had shown me ceremonially for the first time 20 years earlier on a worn-out VHS, a movie that had bonded us unlike any other movie ever really had, or has.     A legacy reboot franchise similar to the newer Halloween movies. And it carries those ideas of being meh and relying on pure nostalgia. This movie, like most of my reviews of these movies, is just a shittier version of t2. While at the same time trying to contradict everything from that movie. I will say it does have cool ideas. Like what if a terminator found a purpose in life and the cyborg lady was pretty bad ass. The evil terminator in this was pretty meh. Overall, garbage with the slightest ideas of maybe trying something new.

    Some of the scenes feel way too over the top. It feels more like a Mission: Impossible movie or even a Marvel flick. It’s not terrible but I feel it could’ve been better. 6.5/10

    Jetzt habe ich mir den Movie auch mal angeschaut, kam 2019 raus. Dämlicher überflüssiger Aufguss. Immer die gleiche Story, Arnie stirbt wie immer indem er sich mal wieder selbst zerstört. Eine alterne Sarah Connor coolt sich möchte gern durch den Streifen und alles ist so Sinnfrei das es mich wundert das die Produzenten es nicht merken das dieses Franchise einfach mal vorbei ist. Teil 1 & 2 fand ich damals großartig. Teil 3 war dann schon der Untergang. Dann ein Lichtblick…

    well it took like three months but i’m finally done with my Terminator marathon. this one is fine. not as good as the first three but better than four and five, which is not saying much but yeah. there are a few good bits and fresh ideas. also a mexican terminator feels like a #RepresentationWin to me

    The future centrists want. This film is a masterpiece of raising my hopes and dashing my dreams that this Sarah Connor and that Laurie Strode from the latter-day DGG movies would team up, kick ass, and settle down together. And this one does pick up on the first two films’ subtextual interest in/concern for the working and lower-middle classes. Any well-to-do folks there were war profiteers, DoD contractors, or AI futurist technocrats. God, do I wish that this franchise was…

    Very frustrating watch. So much actually works. I really liked the entire cast. It’s just painfully uninteresting trying to be exactly what all the previous movies already are. You can only tell the same story over-and-over so many times lmao Salvation is still the only interesting premise offered by the franchise post-original trilogy.
