I’ve never cared about this property but the art direction and NiN score got me curious. Reference humour can be a bit much but it’s so playful and breezy that I had a good time. The main characters are charming and the character design is weird and unique. Great colour and lighting choices, the recurring ‘milking’ joke is hilarious.

the real innovation here is not that the movie looks like Spider-Verse—because, if anything, it looks like a distant cousin—the real innovation is that this is an animated kids (??) movie that is grubby as hell. seriously. all the humans here look disgusting. the city of New York is filthy. the various mutated animals and twisted creatures onscreen border on body horror. in the midst of it all, the turtles are the only characters that are appealing to look at, albeit still grungy. even the language earns the PG rating. it’s all kinda great, and (in the most complimentary way possible) I’d probably wait till my future kid was 10 or 12 before letting them see it. I don’t think…

honestly embarrassing that 4 teenage mutant ninja turtles who had never spoken to a human in 15 years of living, have better social skills than i do
