impossible for me to be Objective™️ about this one (whatever the fuck that means) because it’s not only undeniably on the Mount Rushmore of the Movies That Made Me Love Movies but it was also probably my first Pop Culture Hyperfixation. i remember going to see iron man 2 for my 11th birthday with my dad, and they played that first cryptic teaser trailer for this in front of it, and i was like “what the fuck did i just watch that’s one of the coolest things i’ve ever seen” etc etc etc you get the gist. and from then on, it consumed me (figuratively, not literally – had to specify since there’s a lot of the latter in this…

Everyone has their favorite ’80s or ’80s-adjacent kids-on-bikes adolescence-nostalgia movie / series, and the one that came out the month I graduated high school (i.e. the lunch of my most wistful summer) was always destined to be mine. Cary going down into the creature’s lair with Joe instead of Charles is a major miscalculation, but I have no other gripes. It’s enduringly kinetic, funny, full of fun turns, and Giacchino has never been better in “youthful yearning” mode.

Maybe not the all time great that I thought it was back when I saw Super 8 in the theater as a kid, but god damn it’s really good. Can this J.J. Abrams please come back from the dead? This guy existed in franchises for such a long time then just dropped off the face of the Earth after the utter disaster that was The Rise of Skywalker. I am really hoping The Great Beyond is great man. He needs…

There’s a certain genre of media that involve a group of teenage kids in a small town who battle an evil entity while making the audience feel nostalgia based on the time period it takes place in and I’ll watch that shit EVERY FUCKING TIME

A group of high school geeks with an obsession with zombie movies witness a train wreck that contains a secret the military are desperate to cover up. Super 8 self-consciously harks back to the classic family sci-fi movies of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s and it comes as no surprise that Steven Spielberg’s name is attached to the project. He’s clearly a very hands-on producer as Super 8 reeks of his influence and has the kind of family friendly…

PRODUCTION VALUE!!!!! I remember watching this in theatre’s and the train derailment scene literally rumbled through my entire body.

This really remains like the best Amblin pastiche. It’s so good! Very pure…I remember crying at several moments when I first saw it in theaters. But DANG do I hate a few moments in the third act. It’s such a shame that it gets so junky and that Neville Paige can’t design an interesting looking creature to save his life. Even if the monster just looked different, the emotional climax would really hit home

Production value! Duffer brothers must’ve watched this and came up with Stranger Things. One of my favorite films growing up as a kid—and it still holds up I think. Reminds me of how I was growing up in a lot of ways. I was inspired to rewatch this after The End of Oak Street due to some similarities but this is tiers above that. “I know that’s your camera, sir, but technically, that’s my film.”

Mucho potencial desperdiciado.

tht train derailment went crazy i love tht the kids zombie film is in the credits

stranger things s5 who?

M
IDK maybe what J.J. Abrams needs is to make less films attached to a major media franchise and more films like “super 8” because this was actually low key great! Also Elle Fanning the acting MVP of this movie!

Amei demais o filme!

I love this movie because not everything is spelt put for you. Each time I re-watched it I would catch another piece of dialog and think “Oh, that’s what that means.” or “Oh that’s what that was referencing.” The conversations feel so natural in this movie because it’s actually how a group of kids would talk. So many movies (especially in recent times) makes kids (or anyone) talk in an unnatural way that just screams “I’m an adult writing a…

A very cozy movie perfect for passing the time while watching a lighthearted, fun, and intriguing adventure. It’s not the greatest thing in the world, but there should be more movies like it.

Like ik its supposed to be a cute coming of age alien type movie but I wish the ending wasnt so lighthearted and hopeful. The whole movie was this super action packed army movie and the ending just kinda sucked like wdym the alien just fucking leaves at the end 😭. (Exept the necklace part that got me a little ngl)

It’s like if E.T. met The Goonies met Stranger Things. But with more explosions.

A fun coming of age/scifi mashup. Brilliant score from Giacchino, who imo was at the top of his game in this era.
