David Ayer’s STREET KINGS is totally by-the-numbers, predictable but a solid cop thriller trash. It’s appropriately gritty, gory and soaked in palpable tension with and all star cast of Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie & Chris Evans. What gives this an extra star is Keanu Reeves, i really loved him going against type with this role!

I’m aware I’m overrating this by at least a star, but I just dig this kind of flick: dirty cops in the City of Angels. Decided to follow novelist James Ellroy from “L.A. Confidential” to here, as he had a hand in writing in this script (including a rewrite from “Equilibrium’s” Kurt Wimmer!), and it truly feels like an Ellroy story updated from the 1940’s to the early Obama years, as many of his tropes are here—including dogged homicide detectives, trips to the morgue for evidence, and corruption at the highest levels of law enforcement. at least this has the good goddamn sense to get increasingly and amusingly crazy as it goes on, because Ayer’s stock-in-trade gritty L.A. cop “realism” is as stale as ever, relying on endless cliché (everyone’s corrupt, institutionalized racism deployed as shock atmosphere), bolstered by procedural cluelessness (not one of these hotshot movie cops ever seems to remember to check a corner), and knighting white officers who “play by their own rules” to “get the job done” while patrolling a minority-infested concrete jungle. Ayer’s in love with and ultimately valorizes this absurd cowboy rough-rider ethos without ever actually having anything to say about it beyond his “thin blue line” bullshit.

As pleasurable as it is to see Keanu working effectively and solidly against type as a dirty, alcoholic cop, and as promising as the premise of that dirty cop suddenly growing a conscience while investigating a crime he stands accused of, this runs out of steam very quickly. James Ellroy is a credited co-writer, and the script certainly bears some of his authorial trademarks. What’s missing are Ellroy’s smarts; the solution to the mystery at Street Kings’ center is ludicrously obvious within the first 15 minutes, and yet it takes Keanu’s character until the very last scene to figure it all out. Well, I meant to write this in the morning. But as all of us know, the site was down for a little while. Full panic set in at first. But we’re back. For now. This was your pretty basic action cop drama. But it did have a loaded cast, a couple twists and turns, and Keanu Reeves. Usually Keanu will push any movie for me up at least 1/2 a star, and he did exactly that here. I was never bored with it, but also did feel like I was watching 4 episodes in the middle of some copies drama show. It was decent enough, and did just enough to make me fully invested the whole time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Street Kings boasts a stellar cast alongside director, David Ayer, who always delivers superb action sequences, but the acting and writing feels very forced in parts, and ruins the immersion. It’s still a fun time, even if predictable.

Fascinating in hindsight, as Ayer was half a decade ahead of the Keanuaissance here, having Reeves go totally against type as a bigoted, corrupt cop. But the real treats of this grossly underrated (and just plain gross) jam are Hugh Laurie channeling Keith Carradine as the IA Captain and Chris Evans as a janky, green flattop murder police. This is pretty standard, hyper-masculine LA noir junk, but it delivers on the sleaze and crazy when called upon to – with chewy James Ellroy tough guy patter to boot – and that’s all I really need to get by.

Having now seen about every movie by David Ayer I guess its clear to say the man has a clinic obsession with gangs. You know? Like Scorsese like his underground world but you can make an argument Godfellas is different to Mean Streets and Casino and The Departed. However, with Ayer, every movie feels exactly the same. Un gros casting mais le scénario m’a paru trop prévisible dès le début tu comprends qui sont les mauvaises personnes tu attends juste de savoir comment ça va arriver. J’ai eu du mal à m’attacher au personnage de Ludlow, même si Reeves est toujours très bon, il a manqué dans le film une belle évolution de son personnage. Finalement, attraper des mauvais flics en utilisant un flic qui lui même finalement n’est pas un très bon flic non plus ça m’a semblé un peu bizarre. Mais très bon casting et un bon début de scénario !
