SPOOKTOBER V: DEATH’S DEVICE Frankie Muniz (literal) jumpscare! I’ve been aware of this film’s existence, probably since the trailers for it got released. The premise has always intrigued me, but part of me always thought this was going to be yet another meh horror film from the 00s. And in many ways, it is that. But it was not as atrocious as I was expecting. I mean, again, the premise, no matter how dumb it sounds, was executed as well as I guess it could be. The acting was solid enough. You got future luminaries as Jimmi Simpson, Milo Ventimiglia, Sophia Bush and… also Malcolm in the Middle is here. The videogame graphic of the time had such a charm…

It’s a movie from 2006 about a killer video game. It’s exactly as bad as you’d expect. It’s dogshit, but it’s very funny and entertaining dogshit.

So yeah this is awful in just about every way possible, but it’s a dumb fun teen slasherso of course I live it more than it deserves. A killer video game isn’t original and the death scenes are honestly pretty poorly executed to keep that PG-13 rating, but I’m sorry I love shitty teen slashers and that’s just who I am! Sophia Bush is divine and needed more screen time. John Foster is a twinkly little slice of red headed deliciousness that I crushed hard on back in the day. This was a movie that begged for many many shitty sequels and sadly that never happened. It could have been so awful…and by awful I mean fantastic.

SORRY this was FUN… it’s kinda like if eXistenZ was a teen slasher for the 2006-era Hot Topic crowd (so, barely like eXistenZ)… Silent Hill is namedropped within the first ten minutes… the grainy-green Saw-esque filter… the suggestion of a world in which lady ghosts can seek vengeance by becoming independent video game developers… Sophia Bush as a goth gamer girl named October and Frankie Muniz as a little guy named Swink… SORRY that is FUN!
