“So this is how liberty dies… With thunderous applause.” Shit, this still rules. The grimmest, fullest, most cogent, and expressive realization of Lucas’ anti-war sentiments (a president starts a war with a rebel group he funded to trick the population and consolidate more power? I sure hope that never happens) and interest in the tragedy of good people trapped in political institutions. The fatalistic plotting that on previous watches read to me as simple franchise mechanics play with far more dread and regret than I remembered and the pure open-wound, operatic mood of the final hour—the apocalyptic anguish and heartache of Mustafar in particular but also the horror gestures that lace Anakin’s paranoia/wielding of political power—is among his finest achievements as a director.

This is the best of the prequels although it’s still not great. I still have a crush on Natalie Portman. Surprise. The fighting choreography is actually pretty good though. The prequels have many flaws, but in my rewatching I actually really enjoyed them. Maybe it’s nostalgia, or maybe it’s Natalie Portman, but the feel they have is undeniable and I would never wish that they hadn’t been made. Now the recent trilogy is another story…

They described Anakin’s story so well and clearly, but honestly I don’t think that making Padme’s death’s cause “a broken heart” isn’t really y’know.. isn’t really fitting, cuz wdym she was a brilliant queen, a senator she survived many assassination attempts and dies crying on the bed? Revisiting the prequels with a better understanding for movies after many years was a absolute treat for me. Its not just a huge franchise but they feel extremely special and are unmistakable. The computer animated look shouldnt work but it ends up doing right for me, supports the OG trilogy and us a great way to tell a backstory. Some sound effects are goofy, but overall a very good movie. Mace Windu Rest in peace, he doesn’t deserve to die. During the fight between Obi Wan and Anakin, I had to think of Papaplatte and Basti’s re-synchronisation. I think Order 66 is just a great idea GiG, especially how the Jedi had to fight their way out of the mess.
