Massive, bleak, grisly. Makes me question the old dictum about the impossibility of making an anti-war movie when the act of recreation makes warfare glamorous. But the constant hedging, finding “Good Germans” to focus on and suchlike whataboutisms, feels like a haut-mainstream Spielbergerie that’s too invested in compromise to hold a valid socio-political position. Visually, though, this is the beans AND the gravy.

very disappointed that this film decided to focus on boring things like the horrors of war instead of interesting things like troop formations and tank steering mechanisms

This is the next film on my list to review, but I am using it to thank the many people who have DMd me across my various social media to check whether I am ok after being scarce online for the past few days and missing a Melbourne Cinémathèque screening last night for the first time since 2018. This is what makes Letterboxd, in particular, such a supportive community. A few people know that about a month ago, after five years of searching for the cause of my very low iron levels, a last throw of the dice genetic test revealed that I have a mutation on the JAK2 gene, a switching gene that is meant to switch on and…

A German soldier’s viewpoint is given an unglamorous, terrifying depiction of war. There’s no callous heroism here, no happiness, no joy, no patriotism and especially no redemption. Extended battle sequences are grueling, comrades yearn for home, and their unfair treatment as cannon fodder reminded me of how potent Paths of Glory felt. Vilsmaier’s consistent balance is impressive by showing the soldiers as they are, never painting them with defining arcs and always keeping its tone intact. The battalion cry like little children, piss themselves, shit their pants and break down because of so much hellishness. Does it have the uncompromising power of Come and See? Not quite, so it’ll always be second-best to that. Movies like those only sear and…

It’s nice to spend some time dying together. Unlike most British or American WWII films, Stalingrad doesn’t really focus on the actual battles and combat (even though there’s plenty of it) It doesn’t care about any soldier’s heroic actions. there’s no flag waving or patriotism here. All you’ll find here is the hopelessness of war. Stalingrad is about as bleak and anti-war as any war film could possibly get. It’s incredibly tense and intense almost right from the start and all the way up to the closing credits. The music is fantastic and hits it’s peak during the ending and credits of the film. The ending is incredibly strong and well made. Despite it being from 1993, the film looks…

(The Average Joe’s Movie Club Cast) Recommended by: Max Rothman (Foreign language film – German) Regardless of what the history books have written about the winners and losers of war, there has always been at least traces of humanity within those brave souls putting their lives on the line. “They say in Germany when you die as a soldier you are honored. That’s something, isn’t it? Siberia? Not for me. I’m cold enough.” After having seen countless movies where Nazis are the ultimate villains of history … it was fasinating to follow a group of them as they go from relaxing on the beach in Italy, to experiencing the brutally cold and bloody hell of the battle of Stalingrad. This…

Directed by Joseph Vilsmaier, Stalingrad is a powerful german anti-war film that follows a platoon of soldiers from sunny leave in Italy to the frozen hell of the Battle of Stalingrad. The film excels at depicting the brutal descent from confident invaders to desperate and freezing survivors trapped in the ruined city. It features strong performances, visceral urban combat scenes, and a dark, miserable mood that proves the battle is both pointless and terrifying. The production values are high for the era, with convincing winter visuals and chaotic battle sequences. However, the story focuses too much on how much the german soldiers suffered, which risks making them look like the “good guys” who did nothing wrong. It’s not a perfect history lesson, but as a raw war movie, it hits hard. This film is included in my list of the 2500+ Best Films.

I like German films about WWII. Often they seem more realistic than their American counterparts. Maybe this film could be accused of being too unpolitical, as it doesn’t address Nazism at all, but only describes the lives of soldiers serving under its regime. But I think the film is better by it, knowing what we know, it describes the meaningless of war in a very trustworthy manner. Perhaps it is a bit too much melodrama in parts, especially the scenes with the female German-Russian soldier could have been shortened, but I can live with that.

“I hate war as only a soldier can. I wish it obviate as only a decorated soldier can.” This is one of the most impactful “War is hell” movies that I’ve seen. It’s choice to use a German POV to cover the invasion of Stalingrad isn’t because it has any interest in justifying the Nazis. Instead, it paints the average Wehrmacht as they were: scared boys with once-warm home lives who had been lied to and sent to die for…

The Passion of Christ operiert.

Another great anti- war film. The battle of stalingrad was an incredibly deadly and brutal battle in WW2 but also a very important one. In my opinion this movie is great as it’s very historically accurate and contains historic details both the beginning and at the end. This is a German movie so therefore it shown in the perspective of German soldiers, although it doesn’t include much about the Nazi regime it shows how the soldiers were controlled and forced…

„The desert is shit… except the stars… they are so close“ one of the greatest German movies ever made imo. Amazing score and a really, really great anti war film. Acting felt really natural in conversations, sure the death scenes were a bit weird in its execution but I loved it. Especially the tank battle near the end. This is not a war movie, but a survival movie, the beginning sees our characters soaking up the sun in Italy, by the beautiful Amalfi coast, an amazing price of juxtaposition that will shake you to your core once you realise where they end up and the horrors that ensue, whether German or Soviet, this movie blurs the lines between both, and heavily encourages our characters to do the same, this is one of those war movies that makes you…

Was really enjoying the film up until one of the only female characters almost gets assaulted extremely unnecessary scene doesn’t add to the story and takes away any empathy for the characters involved the soldiers are able to clearly show empathy and even care for a little boy at the start of the film but unable to see a women as something other then an object for their pleasure

Stalingrad is a interesting and emotional war film that shows a lot on the human cost of combat rather than glorifying it. I found it interesting because it shows the fear, exhaustion, and hopelessness among the soldiers who experience during one of history’s bloodiest battles. the realistic atmosphere, strong performances, and good storytelling make it unforgettable war film for me. I think it’s an excellent film for anyone interested in the realities of war.

I loved this film. Why war mongering is never good and why war makes men mad, this film has it all and it’s a beautiful film, it’s a beautiful portrayal of war, i wish there were more anti war films not only focusing on the Germans and making them look the villans, maybe more war films against the other countries promoting war

I understand why many regard this highly but it has too many problems. It seems to have too many characters none of which are ever give enough attention to, the editing especially during the battle scenes is jarring and makes it hard to follow whats going on, and the story had too many time skips. A 2 hour movie shouldn’t feel rushed. Everything else about this film is decent to good, but the above drags it down to a 3.2…

This film snipes the scalp of enemy at the gates that’s for sure What a miserable film in the best way possible, a brilliant war film that shys away from the big picture of strategy and the battle for stalingrad itself and focuses on the men on the ground, no heroism and bravery just misery and death. This was really well paced, it looked great and the story focus of a few men from one squad worked really well much…

“The nice thing about the cold is that you don’t feel anything. Everything is frozen. It’s too cold for tears…” This German anti-war film starts off brimming with promise but stumbles on some haphazard filmmaking that hobbled its strengths. A take on the vicious Battle of Stalingrad, this film’s lavish budget and bombastic war scenes make for great spectacle but little narrative satisfaction. It features the unique perspective of the Nazi army as it invades the industrial city of Stalingrad…

This is the first movie I watched where the nazis losing wasn’t a happy ending. This movie is a very grim depiction of one of, if not THE, worst battle to ever be a part of in human history. A unique perspective and conflict depicted from WWII. Hope deteriorates as a German squad takes part in the Battle of Stalingrad. Very well written and directed because of its depiction of soldiers forced to encounter increasingly frustrating and soul crushing situations. The futility of war and the moral conflicts put upon German soldiers fighting battles they were destined to lose. A unique look at how some Germans were also victims of a ruthless dictatorship.

After watching Hollywoods portrayal of world war 2 for years, watching movies like Stalingrad and All Quiet On The Western Front made me see the war from a completely different perspective. The German soldiers that are often dehumanized and portrayed as monsters(rightly so too) are also humans too. There is barely any mention of the fact that there was a large number of innocent young men forced to fight for a cause they didn’t believe in; Young men with dreams…

Probably should have a higher rating from me, because in terms of war action films, this is one of the best ones I have watched. It’s a miserable film, and when there are so many poorly made war films that rely purely on big action and spectacle as if it’s showing off any ordinary action flick, and almost ignores how truly terrible war is for the individuals who fight it, it’s great to have a war film like this one…
