Can’t think of a fitting way to begin this review so I’m just going to jump right into it. I honesty thought the overall look and war scenes were done quite well. Specifically, the charcoal gray atmosphere tended to accentuate the battle scenes. That being said, as with all war films, this film is ultimately judged upon its impact on humanity, and that impact in many ways is judged by way of the viewer’s investment in the proceedings. Unfortunately, such is severely lacking here. The film chronicles the pivotal battle in WWII where Russian forces struggled, but ultimately prevailed in defeating the Axis powers. Rather than portray the battle in its entirety, this film chooses instead to focus on the…

I’ve given this film a so-so rating because there are parts I really enjoyed and other aspects that were totally disappointing. I could forgive the odd, seemingly unrelated “rescue” that starts the story. I waited patiently through the slow character set-up while director Fedor Bondarchuk had fun paying homage to the carnage that marked the bloodiest battle of World War II. The “sacrifice” scene marked a turning point in the script, and I gradually began to appreciate the acting, especially by Thomas Kretschmann as Kapitan Kan. The birthday scene is totally memorable, too, so by the end I had almost forgotten the terrible use of background music, the sometimes fake-looking studio sets and the often clunky use of dubbed English…

You know that patriotic rah rah “America is awesome” brand US war films get? We’re not the only country who thinks themselves too cool for school. Had to see it for the “IMAX 3D Russian War Epic!” marketing. Why was there so much slow motion? And was that one, very rapey, Nazi supposed to be not as bad we thought? Bizzare. I went to a 4 o’clock show when IMAX movies are heavily discounted…I was the only one in the theater.

This is a semi-historical film about a group of Russian soldiers that are trying to hold a building that protects the crossing of the Volga at the city of Stalingrad in the Fall of 1942. The acting is average or worse with the exception of Kretschmann who you will recognize from Downfall and The Pianist. The main issue I have with this film is that it never really understands where it’s going. It seems to just wallow without any clear direction. It’s like the writer(s) just threw chunks of the screenplay together from various times. The visuals are excellent, but I did spot a view historical inaccuracies as is typical with most World War II films. It’s not a bad film, but it’s certainly far from being a gem.

Russian-made big budget war film, originally in IMAX and 3D. The film starts in 2011, with a first responder to an earthquake in Japan recounting how he had five father’s — a group of soldiers in the Battle of Stalingrad. The bulk of the film is in flashback, with the responder recounting events from before he was born. The battle parts are on a grand scale, with lots of heroic acts, big explosions and slow motion. Some of the CGI…

Absolutely awful movie. I love history (and movies) way too much to be able to appreciate whatever in blazes this director was trying to do, but which certainly was not an accurate depiction of the battle of Stalingrad.

LOL this is so bad. The movie is fake af — all about pretty visuals, no real emotion. So many dumb inaccuracies. Soldiers running while on fire?? Like who does that??🤔🤔🤔 You’d try to put it out, not run into battle. Main character is an idiot, and so are his soldiers. Disgracing Stalingrad like this is just sad.🥀💔 2 stars is being nice. Only good for the effects. Watch it if u wanna laugh at it
