A great example of why men are always the inferior choice in telling women’s stories. Sophie’s Choice has some extraordinary moments and they all occur when the film is focused on Sophie. The story that she tells isn’t one that needs to be framed by a southern virgin writer, and yet that’s what we get. Sure, perhaps he’s intended to be the audience’s lens for viewing her story, but it doesn’t work, not for me. It is horribly tone deaf that after Sophie shares her deepest, darkest shame, we get a voice over from him saying: “I was twenty-two and a virgin and was clasping in my arms at last the goddess of my unending fantasies, my lust was inexhaustible.”…

“Sophie’s Choice” is famous for containing one of the greatest acting performances ever committed to celluloid. It’s a display of definitive talent… that clashes with one of the worst narrative framing choices ever made by a director. Like many coming across “Sophie’s” for the first time decades after its release, my foreknowledge of the film derived from the now-colloquial use of its title. What has come to mean a decision between two equally awful options originates from a famous scene in “Sophie’s” that unfolds outside a concentration camp. Imagine, then, my surprise when “Sophie’s” opened with a skinny southern Christian virgin in voiceover — narrating about his great summer writing adventure in New York City. If it were 20 years…

for a movie called Sophie’s Choice, it surprisingly had very little to do with its eponymous character. So much so, that the her life’s chronicle nearly becomes a mere subplot! and it’s a shame because it was a pretty good subplot with a lot of potential !! the way that the creators of the film chose to unfold Sophie’s life of hardship throughout the (highly unnecessary) 150 minute runtime felt very muddled and sleazy. idk, this just left a bad taste in my mouth. thank god Meryl Streep was there to save this from being a complete trainwreck. yall really weren’t lying about this being one of the great Oscar winning performances!

Clearly Donald Trump has never seen Sophie’s Choice or he wouldn’t have the audacity to suggest that Meryl Streep is overrated

150 minutes of a virgin dweeb lusting after a woman who, for some baffling reason, keeps telling him her horrible experiences during the holocaust. ***SPOILER ALERT**** He has sex so badly with her she dies.

I don’t know if I’m overthinking this but I really disliked how a story about a woman’s tragic life was turned into a story about a young man who simply wanted to sleep with her from the day he first saw her. The film would’ve been much, much better if stingo’s scenes were just cut out.

This is definitely an intense movie. However, I didn’t find the ending that sad. While I hate that it seems it was not her choice and Nathan’s involvement. I do feel that she finally seemed comforted after a lifetime of grief and severe trauma

Meryl Streep was amazing and I wish the story was told from her perspective and included more of her flashbacks. Stingo sucked the life and emotion out of the seriousness of this film.

I’ve been putting off watching this movie because I don’t like sad movies, but I finally ripped off the bandaid. In a movie that’s supposed to be about a woman surviving the Holocaust it’s just about two dudes wanting to fuck Meryl Streep while she spills her trauma. Despite being an overrated movie, Meryl Streep gives a performance of a lifetime, bumping my review of the movie by a whole star.

I don’t know what to say to be honest. It’s just tragic and heartbreaking as fuck. I can really tell that a man wrote this script. One of Meryl’s best acting performance. She’s really one of the greatest actors/actresses of all time.

Were you silent or were you silenced? I was both. The irony of Sophie’s Choice is that she was left with no choice in the sense that her circumstances dictated that whatever path she went down would lead to the exact same destruction and tragedy. Yet, Sophie was a complex and multifaceted character that Meryl Streep portrayed in what may be the greatest performance I’ve ever seen. This movie is what A24 keeps trying to do but will rarely ever…

Number 91 in the AFI top 100 movies of all time list certainly does not disappoint. Meryl Streep puts on an astonishingly good performance as a holocaust survivor who falls in love with an erratic and brilliant man (also played very well by Kevin Kline) in Brooklyn after the war. A young Southern writer befriends the couple and learns all about their relationship, her devastatingly traumatic past, and soon discovers the man has a certain medical condition that needs to be monitored. Meryl Streep speaks multiple languages and completely inhabits the character. It’s a remarkable performance and a very well made film. Definitely recommend.

devestating that such a heartbreaking story is framed through the men that take advantage of Sophie starting with her father and ending with Stingo & Nathan rather than her own story. Meryl acted the hell out of this movie though

We are dying Is there any role that Meryl Streep can’t play? I immediately started hating on stingo when he began his love confession and getting married speech. He’s like one of those ‘I can fix her’ kind of people until he realises that he can’t.

I had never actually known what the choice was until now, although i had always wondered, but it didn’t disappoint. The choice itself was so emotional. U feel trapped inside her anguish, and the fact that u can see it coming makes it even worse. Which leads to the amazing breathtaking performance by meryl. The fact that she learned polish and german for the role, and spoke german and English with a perfect polish accent. It’s insane. What a deserved…

I am giving it a positive score for Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline, but everything to do with Stingo … even the name just tells you that he’s a lousy, pretentious writer who’s in the Dead Poets Society to learn how woo women.

An impossibly tragic story featuring a desperately sad performance by Streep. I don’t think I’ll ever want to watch this again, but I’m glad to have it under my belt. Kevin Kline is also absolutely fantastic here (in his first film role!).

Meryl Streep could be Batman and I would say she is perfect for the role, because apparently she is good in everything. Her story was devastating, sensible, ww2 is my Roman Empire so I cried for a whole second half of the movie. Stingo, on the other hand, is annoying little fuck and I hate how they wrote him. Like what kind of jerk is gonna talk about marriage and try to make a woman sleep with him after she…

Everyone always talks about Meryl Streep’s performance here as one of the best ever committed to film. This is the kind of role that has Oscar bait written all over it – her character goes through hell several times, and that’s before we even get to the “choice” scene – but Streep somehow exceeds expectations. It’s the language work that impressed me most, like how you can hear her English slowly getting more fluent over time. And it wasn’t enough…

Meryl Streep really pulls you up off the ground and vanishes the ground from below you. So confusing cause it was giving horny threesome in Brooklyn vibes and then it wasn’t anymore. But then it ended up that way? I really was entranced by Meryl Streep so

I would have honestly preferred a story completely about Sophie and not the overall story with Stingo or Nathan. Those character interactions were good, but I feel her story is just plainly more interesting than the overall plot with this crazy guy and wannabe writer.

Criticism that men are all over this film (Pakula writes/directs adaptation of William Styron’s book; Stingo sets up blockade) fairly justified, but could be seen as yet another struggle Sophie must get through in this world (Streep, too, who wouldn’t be directed by a woman until “She-Devil”). Making this Stingo’s story more than Sophie’s (who doesn’t take over until more than halfway through) ultimately a dreadfully damaging choice, though, topped off by many scenes that meander. Even still, we get to witness Streep in trademark performance (maybe a top 10 ever in Hollywood), in addition to an underappreciated Kevin Kline debut.

I fear Meryl Streep’s (and Kevin Kline’s) fantastic performances do not make this movie worth watching. Even in 1982 I would find this entire framing cringe. It’s actually shameful to have placed Sophie’s story on equal par with Nathan’s schizophrenia (which is admittedly sad but poorly regulated by his doctor of a brother????) and, worse, the 22 year old Southern twink STINGO who wants to fuck anything that gives him the time of day.

Thanks to the amazing inventions of portable DVD players and dvd wallets my Letterboxd will not be quiet while I travel for the next four months so please rejoice in that! Overall a decent movie, some bits felt a bit random and shoe horned in but also Meryl Streep hey! She’s quite good at this

“Sophie’s Choice,” from 1982, has given the English language a phrase that now circulates independently of the film that generated it. People use “Sophie’s choice” to mean any impossible decision between two equally terrible options, and a surprising number of them don’t know where the expression comes from. The film itself, directed by Alan J. Pakula and adapted from William Styron’s 1979 novel, is about that origin: Sophie Zawistowski (Meryl Streep), a Polish survivor of Auschwitz living in postwar Brooklyn,…
