What felt like an unpleasant “everyone can be racist” narrative somewhere in the middle of this film took a hard turn during the argument in the grocery store into a much more interesting and honest and probably (what would some white girl know about this?) accurate narrative. What came before is revealed to be not build up to making the white love interest subject to some sort of absurd reverse racism narrative but to his expression of privilege in a way that illustrates the misconceptions he was carrying. It’s probably a little too on-the-nose in terms of dialogue, but the shift in perception and the accentuating of prejudice and privilege in this moment are things rarely attempted, especially in films…

Gayet okey uyum ve karakterler. Birbirlerinin hayatına karışmadan birbirlerini tanımaları, ana karakterin problemlerinin çevresi tarafından karşılık bulabiliyor olması, leadlerin ikisinin de bir hatasının olmaması falan safe bir film olarak hissettirdi. Problem relate edebileceğim bir şey olmadığı için çok keyif almadım fakat genel matematikte gayet uygun izlenir.

Cute story, loved the concept of ‘getting exactly what you want on paper,’ but seeing how it wasn’t what you needed. Always love watching Simon Baker. Interesting to see how modern racism plays out, I feel like a lot of movies are set back in the 1900’s to convey that message.

This movie has me in the beginning but I don’t appreciate how ignorant Brian got as soon as he got romantic with Kenya. If anyone ever told me to take off my weave I would bury their body. I wish they kept it buzzy and light. Brian did not fully understand Kenya at all. He was a smart ass and I was immediately turned off. If you’re going to make a movie about interracial relationships, please don’t make the dialogue sound like a Twitter thread about race wars. Once again I wasted my time and now I’m mad, goodnight America.

Smart, sexy, and ready to have respectful, uncomfortable conversations. Just when you think it’s going to settle for easy, superficial answers, it scratches a bit deeper than the surface. It uses the formula we expect from a rom-com to examine an important aspect of American dating culture that rarely gets its due on screen. An underrated romance. Then again, it mirrors facets of my own love life, so perhaps my personal bias is showing.

Sometimes I forget just how gorgeous this cinematography is. Everything looks so brown and golden hour LA for the outdoor shots. Beautiful. A little dated with some of its themes but overall I admire the film for exploring interracial relationships so early on. Not just coming out of your shell dating outside your race. But broadening your horizons and finding yourself in general.

I absolutely love the chemistry and the yearning. It’s a simple movie, but it knows exactly what it’s trying to do, and it does it really well. I love the casting of both the male and female lead. Both of them are very versatile. This was nice. I enjoyed it. Absolutely loved the cast and Simon and Sanaa had great chemistry and looked great together. The film does well in dissecting and exploring interracial relationships and views around it particularly in America. It explores some questions but would’ve been better if the white community and their views on it were showcased as it’s not solely a Black issue. Overall it’s a good film.

strangely holds a special place in my heart because i saw it as a kid like 15 years ago. the use of color, the costuming, and the cinematography really make the movie. with cameos from sommore and fuzzy fantabulous, theres some surprising nods to black talent that embodied the 2000s alongside an already star-studded cast. speaking of, blair underwood did not play nearly as big a part as the movie poster advertises.
