In Nazi occupied Poland there was an extermination camp called Sobibor. There the guards of the third Reich were having the time of their lives. Drinking, killing, robbing, just having fun killing Jewish people. Amongst them were Russian jews that were dead set on escaping by systematically killing every guard in that camp. I’ve never seen nazis having so much fun being nazis. Jesus. There’s a scene involving wagons and people pulling on them like horses while the guards drunkenly are in the back whipping them that I thought I was not gonna make it. It’s pure cruelty, perversion, madness in a seemingly endless scene. Last hour is hard to shake. A reminder that these stories are more relevant than ever.

A very well made, tasteful yet still harrowing recount of a remarkable and tragic piece of history. The actors are really put through the wringer – despite the careful way the director doesn’t exploit or sensationalise any scene.

Next time, try casting polish actors for roles that require speaking polish (even if it’s just a few sentences), damn it.

This is a Russian version of the most famous mass escape from a German extermination camp, Sobibor in Poland near Lublin. In it’s seventeen months of operation, approximately 180,000 people were killed there. On October 14th, 1943, a Jewish Russian POW, Alexander Pechersky organized a mass escape from the camp. Out of 600prisoners in the camp , half escaped but only 50 survived the war. Alexander managed to survive, but do to Stalin’s policy on Russian POW’s, he was sent to fight in a penal frontline battalion for the duration of the war. He also managed to survive that hell. He was truly an extraordinary hero and was finally honored by Putin posthumously in 2016 by being rewarded with the Order Of Courage.

It’s an hour and a half of torture porn with maybe 15 minutes of plotting and 15 minutes of revenge porn. Other commenters have called this “tasteful” but I don’t see it. It’s an exploitation flick. The Russians must be stupid as hell to think this B-movie worse than I Spit on Your Grave is worthy of an Oscar. Pathetic.

Based on the true story of the Sobibor death camp during WWII. Just average as cinematic storytelling, but is a necessary film so that Nazism is never glamorized. Authoritarian regimes are on the rise in the 21st Century. Anything that shows how despicable extremist radicalism can be, and what it can lead to, is a good thing. Will be too violent and intense for many, but the film shows the courage of the camp prisoners in the face of wanton Nazi cruelty. Again, any film that reminds us to never consider supporting fascist ideology is a worthwhile endeavor.

- The film is based on a real story that happened in 1943 in the Sobibor concentration camp in German-occupied Poland. The main character of the movie is the Soviet-Jewish soldier Alexander Pechersky, who at that time was serving in the Red Army as a lieutenant. In October 1943, he was captured by the Nazis and deported to the Sobibor concentration camp, where Jews were being exterminated in gas chambers. But, in just 3 weeks, Alexander was able to plan an international uprising of prisoners from Poland and Western Europe. This uprising resulted in being the only successful one throughout the war, which led to the largest escape of prisoners from a Nazi concentration camp.
