the best rom-com in forever. first time in so long that i’ve remembered why that genre was worth missing. the sad thing is that, 20 years ago, this would have been released by a major studio and opened to $15 million. WHAT HAVE WE LET HAPPENED TO OUR NATIONAL TREASURES!?!? and kudos to lesley headlund for, among many other things, finding a way to ground jason sudeikis’ (not spell-checking that) shtick in something not too far off from reality. and for just, ya know, casting alison brie. alison brie for all of the movies, please.

“are we in love with eachother?” [nods] “what are we gonna do about it?” [shrugs] “what do you want to do?” “nothing. there’s nothing to do. i love you for free, lainey.” “i love you for free, jake.” kill me

“i just really miss you. yeah, i think about you, like all the time. you know what, even the word ‘think’ is wrong, because i don’t actively do anything. you’re just here. look, i didn’t think i’d remember you. i thought i would forget about all of it. and i didn’t. you know, i just– i know we’re no good at this shit. and that’s why we agreed to stop seeing each other so we wouldn’t fuck it up. but i want you to come back. i need you to. because i’d rather fail with you than win with anyone else.” FUCK MY LIFE

“i love you for free” this movie was so sweet but also aggressive with the amount of sexual dialogue lol (might just be me). the only thing is i wished paula wasn’t used as a distraction in the end!

My fourth or fifth rewatch of this. There’s a lot of things wrong with this movie but jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie’s chemistry makes up for 95% of it.
-

This succeeds at being funny and romantic; a rom-com, some might even say. The Adam Brody scene was gonna be hard to beat, but then I got to see Jason Sudeikis yearning eyes, and it was good. I’m surprised this isn’t more popular. Brb recommending this to all my friends.

What a funny movie! First of all, loved the names of the main characters. My first dog was Laney and my son is Jake! I HATED the character of Matthew which is unfortunate since that is my husband’s name lol but it was interesting to me, the name coincidence, that has never happened before. Some very funny laugh out loud parts and some great lines. I didn’t love the way it ended it felt like that ending didn’t do the rest of the movie justice.

got better as it went on but still pretty garbo

Had serious potential, but couldn’t quite settle into a proper Rom-Com that the two fantastic leads deserved. Tried to do a little too much with the comedy at times and didn’t allow the romantic side of the story to properly flourish. Still a very enjoyable watch with a good message and a number of heart warming moments despite the insane amount of sexual dialogue/innuendos.

One of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time while still holding onto a plot that could be taken seriously. Jason Sudeikis is an icon and I didn’t read the screenplay but it honestly felt like he ad libbed a lot of the scenes and just nailed it. I love these cute little banter rich movies that give me hope that funny and cool people exist in this world who you don’t have to keep your guard up…

whenever i tell people i don’t enjoy romcoms, i always feel the need to give justice to sleeping with other people, because there are exceptions to every rule. the love here does not feel formulated, it feels real and i say this because i feel it too. and i love how loved this movie is by my friends, from horny letterboxd reviews to weepy ones. love jason sudeikis and alison brie. full blown lovefest with this one.

Lainey’s obsession with Matthew Sobvechik was shown with surprising depth and I thought it was rather affecting. Adam Scott’s Sobvechik always looked detached and the camera lingered on him so lovingly (how did they make him look so heavenly with that moustache?), while Alison Brie’s Lainey looked ready to fly apart at any moment she was looking at him. At the same time, there’s basically no substance to their relationship at all besides the mere formal aspects of romantic obsession…

(W)holesome. Not a single second of this movie is wasted. The soundtrack bangs. Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis also bang. The support characters are funny, rounded, and realistic. Conversations are had that are mature, thoughtful, real, and hilarious. Undeniably a fantastic movie.

P
Not great, but I still found myself invested in the story.

lainey would love reposting tiktoks about her situationship with jake i just know it

The chemistry between Sudekis and Brie is there, just a rough landing at the end. More of a comedy than a romance, which is fine, but the best have a perfect balance. 73/100

What in the La La Land. This was actually a funny movie, I liked the story. The ending was crazy. This is a good romcom, I highly recommend. Ted Lasso is amazing, I am going to go watch it now. This has 40 year old virgin vibes as well.

The rare modern romantic comedy that doesn’t feel like a continuous roll of clichés. Barking out laughter unexpectedly, stillness when there should be stillness. Could have ended it 15 minutes earlier and it would have been just as poignant. Would have liked to see Lainey talking more than throwing up tho.

Perfect? Immediately rewatcheable. I like this script better than any rom-com I’ve seen in a while. It’s sweet but not cloying. It’s sexy without being super explicit visually but with some solid, vulgar advice, and it’s all playful and light with the genre. This has become my platonic ideal with two stars that I like as comedians.

So good. I think there’s a pretty clear divide in eras for rom coms and this was such a good 2008-2015 era rom com. Almost nostalgic (see: Friends With Benefits) and a great reminder that I need to be watching more rom coms. Giggled at the scene when they finally admitted it. Also love when movies show that they’re doing a flashback to young Jason Sudeikis by just combing his hair down. Tried and true. Only negative is on the movie poster? Why is it that?
-

here after #that snl skit and can now say i’m seeing the jason sudeikis vision.

like this was cute. i actually really enjoyed the story and each character was one i was interested in. the latter half was definitely better bc the beginning just felt cheap. i feel like the stakes could’ve been higher bc my expectations were not met with this enthralling synopsis. anyways, natasha lyonne in this was so unnecessary (and so were a lot of thing in this) but im not complaining bc i love her. still can’t believe she’s not a lesbian in real life. if you don’t know what to watch, and just want something chill and fun, this is the movie.

Great plane movie. This occupied my time on my flight from ORD to Omaha to celebrate my cousin Jack getting engaged. Alison Brie, yep. Yep, yep, yep. Been a while since I’ve seen her in something and it brought me back to me having the biggest crush on her while watching Community. Sudekis is just Drew Dascenzo (complimentary) in this, was hysterical.
