I watched this as a prelude to seeing Maleficent, for the first time since I was a very young child. At a scant 75 minutes, its plot is too simple and iconic to forget. But what leapt out at me, viewing the film as an adult, is how thinly-disguised its explorations of patriarchal sexuality are. Because, really, who wins in the end? The two kings, one of whom assigns his young son to marry the other’s newborn girl, in a move to consolidate their two kingdoms. I don’t know if I’d say that Aurora has come out the victor here. Maleficent explicitly stands in as the Lucifer figure of the story, but as Paradise Lost teaches us, is Lucifer really…

Maybe the most visually stunning of all the Disney classics, but did these fairies really spend 15 years and 364 days hiding with this princess, not using magic a single time, only to let this girl out for a forest stroll on the day they’ve been dreading for all that time while they use multiple magic spells to make a crappy birthday party?!? “não viva no passado, esse é o século 14!” não falamos o suficiente sobre o príncipe phillip, okay, ele é perfeito em tudo tudo tudo. lembrava que esse filme era muito creepy, e é mesmo, até hoje essa cena da roca de fiar consegue me dar calafrios. mas não lembrava que também era cômico assim. como é possível que a aurora seja tão bonita, tão angelical, sendo um mero traço de desenho??? a caneta dos animadores pegando fogo. amo as fadas e as cores delas, estão até hoje brigando pela cor do vestido. não supero a malévola servindo horrores, merecia uma música de vilã.

the most beautiful disney film ever… i loved how tchaikovsky’s music was used in the background to honor the ballet version, while the original songs were even more romantic, esp. the famous “once upon a dream”. aurora’s vocal was so dreamy. i also found maleficent incredibly classy for a villain. it was only 1h 15min, and i honestly wanted more. come to think of it, it wasn’t nearly as creepy as some people claim. philip and aurora were absolutely crushing…

A pleasure revisiting this timeless classic from the Disney vault. Brought back great memories of repeatedly watching it on VHS alongside my siblings. A childhood ritual of mine included a routine obsession with the act of staging my bedroom as a makeshift home theater, orienting the entire space around my most prized possession – a 13” Toshiba TV VCR. This movie easily has one of the best art styles in a Disney animated movie. It reminds me of a mix of medieval paintings mixed with stained glass, ugh, it’s just so visually appealing while also being simple. This is one where I’m watching it and realized that I subconsciously remember the whole movie. The dancing in the forest is great, and “Once Upon A Dream” is an underrated Disney song. Also, insane climax in comparison to the other Disney films from that timeframe.

First time watching this in high definition and its gorgeous original full camera negative, ultra-wide aspect ratio. Some of the most outrageously detailed light play ever traditionally animated. I don’t wanna be that guy, but it was shocking to watch this as an adult and realize that not a single character in this acts rationally at any point and the plot kind of makes no sense 😵 But it’s an audio/visual classic nonetheless!!
