So many “fun caper comedies” from this era are just a disturbing series of escalating crimes.

It’s very possible that this might be the most 2002 movie ever made, but Jason Schwartzman’s song at the end still slaps.

I’d love to see a version of this movie that ditches the Teen Sex Comedy 101 earnestness with Devon Sawa & Jaime King’s characters and devotes itself more fully to the incredibly weird stuff going on with Jason Schwartzman’s character & performance and all the weird, surreal stuff happening on the edges. There’s a kind of Wet Hot American Summer/The Cable Guy hybrid to be had in there somewhere. I feel like the movie we did get is probably objectively bad, but I still laughed a fair amount and am frankly kind of in awe at how bizarre and unlikable Schwartzman was willing to be in what was pretty much his first major role after Rushmore; thank goodness it didn’t tank his career, because it’s weird enough to have done the job.

I think the director was torn between making a psychological thriller or a boner comedy.

Everything about this is horrifyingly awful, and Jason Schwartzman is really the only one trying here. He’s almost too good at playing annoying nerds. I do have to thank this movie for reminding me how much I like Coconut Records

STARRING: THE QUIRKY, DEADPAN JASON SCHWARTZMAN (THE COPPOLA SAGA) Known for his collaboration with Wes Anderson, bringing such a low-key quirkiness but also an aura of his own, Jason Schwartzman has built a reputation as arguably one of the most underrated character actors out there, always leaving an impression no matter how small his role in a movie is. Probably a combination of his talents and his look. Our first movie in this marathon, long after his breakthrough role in Rushmore, sees him as part of an ensemble cast of emerging talents that had made a small splash, with some, like Segel, still a few years from reaching a more mainstream audience. And look, I’m not going to mess around;…

There is a way to combine frat level slapstick comedy with a heartfelt message, but this isn’t it.

Garbage… just garbage lmao. From start to finish this was just atrocious, I can’t even explain how bad this is. Genuinely every aspect was terrible and I had to force myself to finish it. Jeez this was bad

This is one of those movies that is godawful, but for some reason has a few moments of beautiful cinematography that nearly redeem it. The slow pan away from Jason Schwartzman as he somberly plays a grand piano in the diner where he works, singing a somewhat heartfelt somewhat humorous ballad about his desires and shortcomings made for a great ending to an otherwise aimlessly horny movie. I will also say the dream sequences in this are bonkers, but probably the best part. Shoutout Jason Segel in drag. Shoutout 4 seconds of Cameron Diaz.

jason shwarztman really thrives in roles like this

This movie gets a huge nostalgia bump. This is one of the last movies I saw at Galaxy 8 theaters. I was on a date with my wife when we were first dating, she hated it! I loved it! Me and some friends still quote it often. “Treat a hot girl like dirt, she’ll stick to you like mud” Jason Schwartzman’s Cool Ethan is hilarious, super young Jason Segal “got hit by a tuck”, and big Pete from Pete…

Jason Schwartzman’s over-the-top, fun, performance helped me resist the urge to look at my phone, or do anything else, every time Devon Sawa and Jamie King came on the screen

This has to be psychological horror. I only watched it to the end for Jason Schwartzman.

This was a shockingly bad movie for how banger the cast is. The only redeeming factor was Laura Prepon being a mean domme, and even that was only because I’m gay for Laura Prepon.

why they freaky

I used to get this movie confused with ACCEPTED. That one might be a little better, but this is decent fun too.

this was absolute dog shit and reminded me why I don’t have any male friends. it does get extra points for jason schwartzman and his little musical moment at the end because i love him.

confusing honestly… also creepy in a way. as soon as I started eating my food jason schwartzman was giving the old lady a “sponge bath” and I had to exit it and watch scooby doo

i am rather ambivalent towards this film. trying to decipher some of the dialogues felt just about as straining as pushing out a big pointy taco bell shit. the movie’s male antagonists’ personality (ethan) almost borders on pure “why-the-fuck-arent-you-in-jail-asitis”, the perfectly written creep. despite all this, the storyline in itself is quite captivating, and some of the lines are unforgettable laughs. and it passed the simple criteria of making me want to keep watching. 7/10

Hmm…it’s fine I suppose. I’ll be honest if this didn’t have the cast it did (Devon Sawa, Jason Segel, Jason Schwartzman, Jaime King, Laura Prepon, and even a small Jim Rash role) this would probably be damn near intolerable and so much worse. But the cast kinda “saves it” somewhat, it’s fine. Won’t remember it tomorrow.

Its a pretty typical 00s boner comedy with some faces you probably recognize along with all the homophobic and misogynistic jokes you know and love. It has an R rating but it would have been more successful as a pg13. And the R rating wasn’t utilized as well as it should have been. They said the f word like twice and showed a 60yr ladies boobs once. They were nice but if your gonna get the R you need to…

The only real reason to ever watch this film is to witness Jason Schwartzman going full blown Nicolas Cage, proving without a shadow of a doubt that they are actually in fact blood related. His song at the end is simply amazing, time to bust out those old Coconut Records albums. “You’re smart. I like you. I’ll probably give you a nickname.”

Takes some wild comedy swings that make me want to like this even as none of them pay off. The rest of the movie is ambitious for a teen sex comedy, but the serious plays for drama are cancelled out by badly overwritten characters that are almost uniformly detestable. There’s a seed here that I think really resonates – watching a bunch of brilliant cheaters screw around on campus – but it’s not clever enough to make good on that premise. The cast is curiously stacked.

M
really stupid idea to call this movie slackers instead of cheaters, jason schwartzman outperformed everyone per usual, jason segel had no reason looking that beautiful at the end, dave made everything seem a lot creepier than it was, angela’s roommate was so much more interesting than angela i wish this movie was about her, gets an extra half star for the song at the end
-
J
This was disappointing, especially with a fairly decent cast here. I think I laughed twice…1) the hair doll (which is creepy as fuck) & Pete from Pete & Pete explaining how he wants to live as a gay man but claiming he’s not gay.
-
M
This movie was ass but young Jason Segal is sooo 🤤

I hope jason Schwartzman was paid a lot of money for this role because holy shit.

Not good but interesting if you wanna look at early Jasons Schwartzman and Segel. Plus Schwartzman sings a couple of songs which is always a plus. Maybe watch I Heart Huckabees instead.

Extremely jealous of Jason Segel’s hair in this 🧑🦱
-

Feels forgotten about and should be mentioned among other early 2000s comedies like Road Trip, Old School and Van Wilder. The cast is stacked, Jason Schwartzman’s performance is brilliant. Had no idea who Jason Segel was when seeing this for the first time. The soundtrack goes hard too with Handsome Boy Modeling School.
-
E
Jason Schwartman’s character is like a spoiled, bratty little sibling that doesn’t know how to stfu 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Also the whole plot in this movie could’ve been a side plot line in Glee season 4 and I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s just that simple yet ridiculously badddddd. Frat guys would eat this movie up tho lol

I was laughing and then I was terrified, and then I was having fun and then I wanted to kms. The kind of movie that makes a mundane day better and worse all at once.

The best this movie has to offer is a small look at which of these actors developed an acting career, which ones didn’t, and examples of perhaps why.

Time has not been kind to this one, but unfortunately it’s a top 5 Jason Schwartzman performance.

This was so bad and not funny at all. Funny people don’t alway equal good writing.

Just a solid, stupid funny early 00’s movie. Of course some jokes/gags are a little dated but par for the course with these. Cool Ethan is genuinely Jason Schwartzman’s funniest role I’ve watched him in. 😎🤣

-
KKindFuzz 7 月 19, 2026
Being a female love interest in one of these movies is a horrific experience beyond what I could imagine. All of your autonomy and distinctive characteristics would be ripped away from you to benefit someone like Devon Sawa. ….theres a lot I hate here but hey who wasn’t young and horny and desperate once. I’m glad I watched this movie; this is the kind of trash I like. Also hit by the Jim Rash jump scare

‘Slackers” is a dirty movie. Not a sexy, erotic, steamy or even smutty movie, but a just plain dirty movie. It made me feel unclean, and I’m the guy who liked “There’s Something About Mary” and both “American Pie” movies. Oh, and “Booty Call.” This film knows no shame. Consider a scene where the heroine’s roommate, interrupted while masturbating, continues even while a man she has never met is in the room. Consider a scene where the hero’s roommate sings…
- Synopsis
- Dave, Sam and Jeff are about to graduate from Holden University with honors in lying, cheating and scheming. The three roommates have proudly scammed their way through the last four years of college and now, during final exams, these big-men-on-campus are about to be busted by the most unlikely dude in school. Self-dubbed Cool Ethan, an ambitious nerd with a bad crush, enters their lives one day and everything begins to unravel.
