Global Airways Flight 502 departs Oakland for Minneapolis carrying an ensemble cast of passengers. Shortly into the trip, a lipstick-scrawled warning is discovered in a first-class bathroom mirror, claiming there is a bomb on board and demanding the plane divert to Anchorage to avoid deadly decompression. Captain Hank O’Hara (Charlton Heston) has his flight attendants and co-pilot (Yvette Mimieux and Sam Allen) look for the perpetrator, while a jazz cellist suspects the erratic, jittery young soldier sitting next to him. I had no idea a highjacking could be so dull. Nothing much happens as the crew scurry around pointing fingers. Cliches abound as the usual plane suspects look conspicuous. There’s even a pregnant woman on board. I think we can see where that is headed. The plot could better be explained like this: A confrontation, then a scuffle that ends when James Brolin slaps someone. Repeat. Brolin does manage to be a little creepy though.

Having watched 3/4 of the 70’s Airport disaster films, capping them off with their spoof Airplane, I feel like I’ve completed this era of jumbo jet jitter-fests. But seeing as I’m partial to bit of mopping up, I noticed this rarity on my Letterboxd watchlist and couldn’t resist. The trouble is, Skyjacked is so of the blueprint that it will file into my subconscious as nothing of note. This review will likely be my only trigger to know I’ve seen it. It stars Charlton Heston (he also stars in Airport 75) who carries a certain authority, gravitas and possibly arrogance as we observe him casually puffing on a tobacco pipe in the cockpit. Indeed, one of strangest things about Skyjacked…

Of all the different types of disaster movie, I’ve always found the airplane disaster to be the least interesting, which sucks because they’re also the most plentiful. And they’re all exactly the same: a cast of familiar faces playing thinly-sketched characters who you don’t give a shit about. And also, for some reason, the pilot is always in some complicated relationship with a stewardess (I know, flight attendant. But not in the ’70s). 𝘼𝙞𝙧𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙚! really parodied these things to perfection and this one follows the exact same formula. But this one is probably the worst of all of them. It’s long, it’s boring, and it’s stupid. The worst part is that the terrorist, whom I won’t give away, goes from…

Watched in a double feature with The Concorde… Airport ’79, which makes perfect sense since both films are about American planes charting dangerous paths to Moscow, although the route in Skyjacked is specifically the result of a bomb threat. As is par for the course in a 70s disaster film, there are plenty of stars on display: rugged captain Charlton Heston, stalwart flight attendants Yvette Mimieux and Leslie Uggams and a passenger manifest that includes James Brolin, Walter Pidgeon, Jeanne Crain, Roosevelt Grier, Susan Dey and Mariette Hartley. It’s pretty easy to see where the plot points are headed and I have to admit my rating is biased since I’ve never cared for Mr. Heston, but Perry Botkin Jr.’s score (dig that funky theme!) and Robert Swink’s editing maintain a decent amount of suspense as the aircraft speeds towards its treacherous destination. Not sure why SKYJACKED is so forgotten and not part of the disaster movie canon. At least it’s a real film, a thriller like ROLLERCOASTER and JUGGERNAUT. Great to see Rosie Grier and Susan Dey. And love how it keeps throwing more crazy elements at you – all the way til the end.

Viewed on TCM Airport (1970) was released in the spring of 1970. It was a huge hit and it ultimately received ten Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. The Poseidon Adventure (1972) was released in the winter of 1972. It was a huge hit and it ultimately received nine Academy Award nominations. Here begins the “Disaster Movie” trend of the 1970’s. The following years we get, The Towering Inferno (1974), Earthquake (1974), Rollercoaster (1977), Airport ’77 (1977), Avalanche (1978) and finally Airport ’79 (1979). In the same year we got The Poseidon Adventure (1972), there was Skyjacked (1972), released in the summer of 1972, starring Charlton Heston who was the “Disaster Movie” king apparently appearing in three of the nine…

Somehow in my voracious appetite for disaster films I missed this one. I probably assumed it was a made for TV film. I wouldn’t have been wrong in that assumption as the production value is at that level, but no it was theatrical released in that spot between AIRPORT and AIRPORT 75. Here we get Chuck Heaton as a pilot navigating a bomb threat on his plane, torrential weather and facing down Russian MIGs. As expected he does it with authority and clenched teeth. Watching this I couldn’t help but think that being a pilot in a disaster film is the perfect gig. You just have to sit there and be intense while pulling levers. Heston is the king in…

A really enjoyable 1970’s disaster thriller that was clearly inspired by the huge success of Airport, this movie boasts a fun cast of familiar faces that adds immensely to its overall entertainment value. Charlton Heston headlines said cast with his usual mighty macho stalwart resolve as the tough captain of a plane that gets hijacked by an unhinged Vietnam veteran. Heston is quite a treat to behold as he grits his teeth and clenches his jaw with the utmost of fierce masculine intensity and unwavering granitic conviction. Not a bad 70’s disaster film. It has Charlton Heston as the pilot of a plane and a young James Brolin playing a disgruntled Vietnam veteran who takes over the plane and hijacks it and thinks by flying to Moscow, he will win their hearts and minds so that he can become one of them.

Leaning into the blossoming disaster craze of the decade, this well-made suspense thriller isn’t as nail-biting as the premise promises, with romanticised flashbacks halting momentum, but the team deliver a handsomely produced picture. 3 / 5 Fast Fact: Director John Guillerman would helm the ultimate disaster movie two years later with ‘The Towering Inferno’.

Although the movie was alright and did have some good things going for it, Charlton Heston being one of them. I feel that considering the Airport franchise dominated the whole 70s decade, it was kind of overshadowed by that. Can’t even say it was a good Heston classic because he would go on to do Airport 1975, and I feel that was his better plane movie. But it did its job and I was into it so give it watch.

Skyjacked is for the people who strongly prefer the second hour of Airport – the part that takes place on the actual plane, or who wished there was little less soap opera in Airport. Skyjacked cuts out the soap opera so much that it’s vague what is going on between the two pilots and the head flight attendant – she used to be married to Charlton Heston, but she couldn’t have kids, so they divorced? An unremarkable thriller set aboard a jetliner. The cast of characters comprise the flight crew: a captain, first officer, copious flighty attendants and passengers that include a pregnant woman, a senator, his son and his son’s girlfriend, and several other stereotypical passengers along with our bad guy a mentally unstable Vietnam War vet. The dialogue is cringe, the acting is meh but at least the soundtrack is decent-ish. The cut scenes following the Captain and the War Vet added nothing except more to the pile of cringe that this film consists of.

This is a cracker of a film. It has loads of really silly moments but it has a simple premise and it follows it through quite efficiently. It starts as a guess who the hijacker is and the fairly obvious revelation doesn’t spoil the fun. This is a fine example of why Chuck was a proper film star. The Running Man (2025) brought me here and showed me who the skyjacker was. Would I want to be on a plane where Charlton Heston, the woman he took on a date to a playground, and her current boyfriend who happens to be Buford T. Justice’s idiot son Junior are the flight crew? No. Would I want to be on a plane where Rosey Grier talks to me about jazz and John Hillerman and Piglet are the air traffic controllers? Yes.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen such a relaxed thriller in my whole life. They’re holding dozens of people hostage in this movie, including a US Senator, and yet everyone is just so freaking chill. If it weren’t for the all-star cast (including an intensely glamorous Yvette Mimeiux, Leslie Uggams, and Jeanne Crain in her final film role), the special effects would definitely make you think you’re watching a really special episode of a 1970’s TV show they’re so rudimentary.

Skyjacked is perhaps best described as the “other” Charlton Heston airplane movie of the 1970s, and that should tell you everything about its cinematic standing. Whereas the gloriously ludicrous Airport achieved a kind of camp immortality, this one settles for being aggressively ordinary.. The set-up—James Brolin as a deranged Vietnam vet menacing Heston’s all-American pilot—is straight from the bargain bin of disaster cinema. A handful of 70s pop icons like Rosie Greer and Susan Dey fill out the cast. There is the usual cheesiness associated with this era and genre, but despite that it’s actually pretty tense and entertaining. What I found interesting is how reasonable everyone in charge is, from Charlton Heston’s pipe smoking captain to the Russian officials at the Moscow airport. Saving the passengers is more important than defeating the bad guy. Speaking of which, James Brolin is pretty fun as the deranged skyjacker. That said, his karate moves are patently ridiculous, and the flashbacks are among the most hackneyed I’ve ever seen. Which brings us to “Airplane!” After seeing its wild parody, it’s hard to take these earnest source films seriously.

What do you get when you invite a pregnant woman, a jazz player, a senator, a crazed veteran, and Charlton Heston to fly to Minnesota? A flight that ends in Moscow, of course. Or, as my favorite air traffic controller character put it: “Can you divert to a free world destination?”

Some good squib action at the end there, and there’s some solid craziness from Brolin, but Heston really reigns it in here, probably to its detriment. A little slow going and not enough intrigue to be fully likable, but if this era is your wheelhouse your mileage (ha) may vary. It’s not a TV movie, but the appearance of Claude Akins and John Fiedler make it automatically a TV movie by association. The love triangle flashbacks were absolutely hysterical, and I’m now convinced it was this movie specifically being referenced in the flashbacks in AIRPLANE!

Of this specific little time in film history there were campy airplane disaster films (The Airport series, of course), disaster films where a Vietnam vet played a key role (the bloated but iconic blimpfest Black Sunday), but this is first one I’ve seen that’s both of those AND also turns into a Cold War thriller about halfway through. Skyjacked is an interesting airbound disaster flick starring an excellent Charlton Heston. A mystery passenger successfully hijacks a large airliner, and the pilot (Heston) navigates the challenges of keeping his crew and customers safe with logic and dignity. Skyjacked was on my disaster movie watchlist. The light melodrama has ingredients taken from Airport (1970). Two things stand out in this Skyjacked. First, Charlton Heston’s acting was great and he was such a ruggedly handsome man, if I can say so. Second, the sequences of the 707 in flight and the interception with the fighter jets had cool and solid cinematography. But every time the 707 jet turned, it was a big tilted turn that would of had passengers hanging…

𝘼𝙞𝙧𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙚! really parodied these things to perfection…

A beta version of the Airport model of thrillers, the type that had a broad cast and a singular location as a hook. Heston is his usual ham-fisted self, a vibe that I personally enjoy. Brolin sweats through the whole thing as a PTSD addled Vietnam vet, and Rosie Grier plays a classical musician with a secret stash of booze. Fun, but shallow times await, should you press play.

TBH the only notable thing about this is how much young James Brolin looks like Christian Bale. Too bad he couldn’t act anywhere near as well.

Although MGM had a 1972 box office hit with this in the wake of Airport, it really hasn’t aged too well. The script is the main weakness, with a poorly developed hijacking plot and thin characterizations (with awful “dream moments” to attempt to provide some back story). Hard to drum up tension. Still, Charlton Heston clearly didn’t mind the role of airline pilot, as he starred in Airport 1975 only a couple of years later.

Nothing instils confidence like knowing that your airliner is being piloted by Charlton Heston, unless it’s Chuck lighting up his pipe just as he’s about to take off. This man will clearly be able to take every eventuality in his stride, which is just as well. Clearly this is a response to the success of Airport, although here the action takes place almost exclusively in the air. And it turns out to be an audition tape for Chuck’s turn in…

Airplane April II I don’t know if its just because of how shit the other airplane movies I’ve seen so far but I thought this movie wasn’t that bad. It’s indistinguishable from the quality of the other Airport movies and that’s perfectly fine. They even brought back Charlton Heston from the best airport movie even though this came out first. It’s a relatively tense and entertaining and of all the airplane movies I’ve seen too far this month this is the one I can recommend the most.

Skyjacked is a solid all-star disaster flick. John Guillermin directs the film professionally, offering solid thrills and appropriate suspense. Charlton Heston grounds the film dramatically, giving legitimacy to the formulaic goings-on. The supporting cast is unsurprisingly eclectic, ranging from Yvette Mimieux to Walter Pidgeon to Rosey Grier. The surprise villain is truly threatening, allowing for an exciting, if somewhat exploitative, take on Cold War anxiety in the midst of Hollywood cliche. If a less experienced director had made this film,…

Skyjacked is a perfect example of the sort of theatrical release that would’ve been a “Movie of the Week” feature on television if not for the presence of Charlton Heston, who at this point in his career, was bulletproof at the box office with every other film he headlined raking in money. This one was no exception with it being one of MGM’s most profitable films of 1972 at $6.55 million (alongside Shaft and Kansas City Bomber). Between 1961 and…

This is a pretty good example of the kind of disaster film Airplane! was parodying. An airliner is hijacked by a mystery man who leaves a message saying there is a bomb on board. Stoic captain Charlton Heston leads the crew and passengers, which include a senator, a large friendly guy with a cello, and a pregnant woman, through the ordeal. There’s some potential early on, as the film has a sort of procedural focus on the flight before things…

A disaster, an airplane and Charlton Heston, the holy trinity of greatness but somehow this movie just couldn’t quite make it work. It does have the essentials: Charlton Heston smoking a pipe while piloting a passenger plane, a pregnant woman demanding hard liquor, embarrassingly awkward romantic scenes and a sweet 1970’s score but none of it really adds up to anything. The villain is also a little too comfortable with the N word in his mouth which is a big…

On the list of 70s disaster films, basically a variation on Airport. Fantastic cast, but some bad dialog, with cheesy flashback that I guess were supposed to give the characters more depth, but makes the film feel cheaper than it really was. Not sure if it was TCMs copy or not, but sound quality was terrible and the film look was blurry. Probably only for Heston and or Brolin fans, a bit of a oddity or curiosity film, but if you are on the fence, you could skip it. Overall the film is basically average.

James Brolin’s easily the creepy highlight of the movie. Probably one of those rare times I can say that I wish there were MORE flashbacks. Heston’s supposedly the hero, but spends most of the film being a condescending jerk to every person he meets — down to smoking a huge wood pipe in a small cockpit to the visible dismay of his crew.

The success of 1970’s Airport got this movie made. In this one an anonymous hijacker wants Charlton Heston (the pilot) to take a plane to Alaska or the hijacker will blow the plane up. The first part of a movie is much better than the second part. Once the hijacker is unmasked the movie falls apart. The pace is pretty slow and there is a Heston love story (with Yvette Mimieux) that is awkward at best and ends up having nothing to do with the movie. Final thought: An ok movie. There’s only a handful of things more enjoyable than watching Charlton Heston act – and there’s almost nothing better than when he’s placed into a terrifying situation like Skyjacked. The ridiculous plot doesn’t matter, the bad dialogue, again, doesn’t matter – ALL that matters is Heston and how he reacts. Everything else might be bad, but HESTON REIGNS

From the era when villains were all crazy Vietnam veterans, we find James Brolin as a skyjacker who takes over pipe smoking captain Charlton Heston’s plane. A slog to get through, I found Brolin fairly engaging despite his character’s dumb motivation of communist glory, where I found Heston actively bad in his role. Not the fun time I was hoping for.

Coming in the wake of Airport and boasting a similar plot, this never amassed much of a reputation in its day, but it is a decent disaster flick that tries to do something different. Workman-like film that hits all the 1970s thriller buttons: aging leading man, diverse cast of bystanders, very slight reference to Vietnam, and Soviets. Nothing remarkable here, but moves along at a decent pace. There are 4 flashback/dream sequences that add a touch of art, but they are mostly distracting or nonsensical. Highlight of the story was the Soviet guards dispatching the hijacker with extreme prejudice as soon as he lands.
