A very special movie. A reminder that in a broken system that only seeks to oppress, art serves not only as catharsis, but as liberation.

“Freddy in this?” “Freddy is definitely in this.” I understand why this is the case, but it bums me out that the conversation around how emotional movies like this never talk about how funny or charming they are. Like that’s what really made me love this movie. At one point I turned to my friend and joked “this shit makes me wanna go prison” but I did kind of mean it! The cast of characters we meet here are such lovely, full people, and I could’ve lived here for much longer. I had a happy cry to the scene when they’re all dancing. Also loved seeing the actual play! Clarence Maclin should’ve been in Oscar conversations! Colman Domingo remains That Guy and it’s his Oscar to lose imo.

a tremendously tenderhearted tribute to the therapeutic power of the artistic process, overflowing with honesty and humanity in every single scene thanks to what is not only the ensemble of the year, but also one for the ages.

There’s this scene…where everyone is around the circle. And Brent I think his name was.Was telling them to imagine a good memory. And everyone was telling their own stories. That felt very touching and peaceful.Thats maybe my favorite scene.

I genuinely wish everyone would watch this film, Sing Sing is one of those movies that makes you think about philosophy, art, theatre, literature, poetry, and what it really means to be human, all without ever feeling pretentious, everything about it feels so carefully made, so honest and beautifully human Colman Domingo is phenomenal, I genuinely love this man, I don’t think I’ve ever watched him in anything and felt like he was anything less than incredible, and seeing him…

Wow. What a beautiful piece of art. Based on a true story as well. This really got me emotional in all the best ways. Domingo’s performance was so heartfelt and true, and the chemistry between him and Maclin and there journey together was beautiful. I highly suggest watching this. MVSP goes to Sean Dino Johnson, his monologue was great and he showed just had much this meant to him by taking his role so seriously.

I’ve been thinking about Sing Sing a lot recently (more truthfully, I’ve basically been thinking about it since the first time I watched it), so it was time to revisit. I truly believe this is one of the best films of the decade and possibly one of the more important ones as well!! Its really such a shame that it didn’t have a wider release, so I’m taking it upon myself to tell everyone who hasn’t seen Sing Sing to go watch…

this movie actually made me want to cry. so simple but genuinely beautiful, and the performances felt so real. really loved how this movie shows male vulnerability without making it feel forced, especially within a system that teaches men to hide their emotions. seeing these men find comfort in each other and express emotions through art is something so pure. definitely one of those movies that stays with you for sure

What a great shame it is that society has deemed incarceration a means to the end of ‘justice,’ thus normalizing the devaluing of humanity for those who’ve fallen victim to the system. Great watch.

Absolutely sensational, all the way to the end. Every passing moment felt close to my heart. What i like most about this film is how intentional it is, intentional that how it handles the joy of being a human being and the ability to experience art as the essence of humanity, even at the face of soul shattering fate of one self. And also how it gently treats and holds space for the vulnerable parts of being a human. TRULY, what a beautiful and sensational movie. THE END MADE ME CRY SO MUCH OUT OF JOY, AND I JUST WANTED TO HUG DIVINE G MYSELF🥹❤️🩹.

Sing Sing is the kind of film that finds something deeply human in a place where you’d least expect it. Colman Domingo is fantastic as always, but what makes the film hit even harder is knowing that much of the supporting cast are playing versions of themselves and drawing directly from their own experiences. These aren’t just performances, these are people sharing pieces of their real stories, which gives the film’s themes of art, friendship, redemption and finding purpose an…

seeing the cast lineup repeatedly say “as himself” at the end of the movie genuinely just made me cry even more. the setting of this movie obviously lets you know that you are in for a bleak film viewing, you expect nothing but utter sadness to come out of something like this, and its one of those movies that you are certain will leave you staring at the wall for hours. and it did. here i am writing this review after…

The American Prison Industrial Complex, like the country itself, is a blight on humanity. This lovely film manages to make some art out of that blight, but it’s the art of tragic circumstances being shouldered. Kudos to everyone involved.

Really beautiful movie with incredible acting all around. I could watch Colman Domingo monologue for hours. Makes me so happy they used so many of the actual RTA members, wouldn’t have felt as authentic or powerful without them.

J
I rarely feel so connected with a movie. Just a beautiful rewatch. It is so rare to see dudes talk this vulnerably about themselves and their feelings to one another. I adore the cast, Colman Domingo deserved this Oscar. The ideas in this movie of pain, grief and overshadowing them with a fun theatre experience are so rich. Obviously they aren’t fully overshadowed but the RTA is such a good distraction for these guys in prison. I could watch this over and over and never get tired of it.

the scenes that stuck out the most to me was divine eye and divine g reading the hamlet soliloquy. there is something so human and healing about art. art makes you feel, it makes you think, it’s so all encompassing that you can’t beat human made art. what a beautiful movie and beautifully shot and graded. seeing the credits at the end and seeing that they played themselves. final nail in the coffin for me. just kept crying. thanks for reminding me why i love art (creating, seeing, consuming and being part of it) so much.

Such a tender and beautiful movie. As a young man with privilege, to watch a story that I resonated with so much about those who have had things taken away from them and a system designed to fail, and had felt the stakes of not expressing myself and emotion being held, seeing that pattern within the men in my life and see the ultimate cost of it. To watch a story express this feeling when the stake is finding freedom…

“So are you acting at all during this interview?” Bitch, if I didn’t kill anyone before, I am now. The first time we see Divine Eye’s room, it’s clear he has little hints of art in his life: the drawings on the wall, the headphones, and how easily he reenacts Shakespeare. If you don’t practice your craft, you lose it somewhere down the line. Divine G helps him find that playfulness again and rediscover the acting that comes so naturally to him. It was easy to see the story heading in that direction, but that doesn’t make the bumps in the road any less meaningful

This movie made me so emotional. Everyone’s acting was incredible the fact that most of the men were formally incarcerated made me cry even harder, the “as himself” ouuu that fucked me up. This story needed to be told. This movie just became one of my favorites. It’s like no other movie I’ve seen before.

Probably the greatest representation of the impact of art on the soul, a truly beautiful and refreshing representation of vulnerability that dethrones the norms and values where the expressive are devalued by the social dismissal of what is deemed “goofy”. Watched this not knowing the movie is made up of most of the real RTA participants; one of the best brotherhood films I’ve ever seen.

Those who can’t do teach. Divine G taught. He taught through action and unwavering hope. He taught acting and he taught perseverance. When Divine G first brought in Divine Eye he thought he just brought in a new actor, a new student for him. But when that student started immediately competing for the same space as him he felt instantly that he was being replaced of his own doing. Little did he know that was going to be the most…

Becoming a big fan of this directing duo, the movie is slow at times but man does it build up a big emotional investment. The lines between documentary and drama begin to blur, so cool they used people from these experiences as actors who did AMAZINGLY well. Coleman Domingo is incredible, and the credits are as good as the movie. Very moving

An emotionally heavy, deeply moving look at the human need for expression. It’s devastating and beautiful to see how theater becomes a literal lifeline for these men, giving them a piece of humanity back within a soul-crushing system. Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin deliver phenomenal, soul-stirring performances that elevate the entire film. A solid, powerful drama. 7/10

All around a beautiful film. It looked great, the cinematography and framing was amazing, and I loved the story. Really shows that art isn’t just an escape—it’s something people need to survive. Showing that with those in prison was really cool. Colman Domingo gave a masterclass performance as well and I was actually blown away by not only him, but how pretty much every other supporting actor plays “himself”. Did not know that but it was very cool. Undeniably special film.

Really beautiful—watched w Fanny and her dad. Made me think about how large of a role hope plays in my own life. Without it, I think we lose not only our motivation, but something of our humanity. And when it seems impossible to find hope in your own life, it’s always possible to find it somewhere else. Reminded me of Ikiru in that sense.

Filmed inside the notorious prison starring convicts, this is an inspiring piece of neorealism about the use of art to rehabilitate and deal with prison life With raw performances from Domingo and particularly Maclin. It’s hard not to be moved by this sweet simple story

I am a very easy lay when it comes to stories about the power of art, but that notwithstanding, this is a great film. The performances are perfect across the board. Divine Eye was absolutely robbed of an acting nomination. Shot beautifully on 16mm.

In the darkest of times, in the darkest of places, with seemingly the darkest of people, art and the love along with connection it creates are present. It is rewarding to remain open minded and to give those stories a chance that have yet to be told and who better to do it than those who need it most. This film poses an important underlying question that got me thinking, why does any of this matter?
