This movie is the starting point for me to tear my own shirt off while watching it, due to the brutal and bleak environment that creates such a suffocating atmosphere, but at the same time, it also causes a small pang in my heart from how intense it can be to watch. I should preface this review by saying that I watched Shot Caller in a virtual movie night watch party with two of my IRL friends, and it wasn’t what any of us really wanted to watch, but we struggled with some severe technical difficulties and ended up landing on it as something that we *could* watch together, whether or not any of us were particularly excited about it. Wenn ich während eines Films die Luft verliere, weil dessen Stimmung so beklemmend ist, dass ich für die Hauptfiguren mitatmen will, dann läuft etwas sehr richtig. 9/10 incredible pacing, the transitions between the current time and the time “Money” was in prison flowed effortlessly to answer questions moments after you had them. Between the understanding of survival in Californias rough gang based prison system and dealing with joining the race based gang life to eventually turning on the gang while saving your family from the “snitch jacket”. The genuine raw emotion the actors are portraying makes you think “What would I do in this situation?” and fully shows that moment of plight.

An excellent prison drama that is equal parts gory brutality and an edge of your seat thriller. I said at the beginning “Jaime Lannister”, but that would be selling Nikolaj Coster-Waldau short. He completely transforms into the character of Money, and it’s a blast to see his progression throughout his stay in prison. Ric Roman Waugh puts forth another suspenseful entry with it’s questions on morality and stellar cast pushing it over the edge.

A great movie. Feels like it drives a fine like between a documentary style and the normal movie style. The main actor does great work and the overall story is definitely something to enjoy and think about. One thing leads to another till you understand that you have little control over life. Hammers the nail of the jail system as well. Kinda reminds me of a much slower uncut gems type movie so maybe if you enjoyed that one you will like this one too

Hard to find a flaw Its messaging was pretty clear – and delivered well. Money’s performance was insane I wish he was in more movies. His ability to act with his eyes is insane. This movie surprised me in how well structured it was, it did a great job of staying clear while creating an ambiguity around moneys intentions and where the story was actually going which really pulled you in. Great character development which is one of my biggest wins in a movie!

Holy fucking Netflix writing. Movie is an hour and forty minutes of setup for a character you don’t care about to do a job you don’t care about to to kill a guy you don’t care about. Its set up to be a pandering action movie for your friends drunk kinda racist dad and then half way through tries to divert into an on the ground prison film but is filled to the brim with god awful dialogue, writing, and cinematography. It feels like this was made for snap chat shorts.

Je suis mitigé… D’un coté j’ai trouvé le film sympa et j’ai aimé la finalité mais d’un autre côté j’ai trouvé une grande partie plutôt fade et j’ai eu du mal à m’attacher aux personnages.

A gritty crime thriller about a family man who is transformed by the prison system and slowly gets pulled deeper into a life of crime. The movie is intense and does a great job showing how quickly circumstances can change someone. For me, the atmosphere is dark and gripping, and the performances are strong, especially the lead. The story can be a little predictable at times, but it remains engaging throughout. Overall, a 3.5/5 for me, a brutal and gripping crime thriller with a strong performance and plenty of tension.
