Let us imagine, for one second, that people had actually gone to see Shoot ‘Em Up when it was released. Now, I had an excuse. My first daughter was only a few months old and whilst I didn’t have the task of fending off Paul Giamatti and his ever decreasing gang of useless henchmen, it was still a tough old job. So I didn’t get to see it at the cinema. If everyone else had done their job, just like they didn’t for The Nice Guys or Bastille Day or Dredd and so on, then we could be sitting and waiting patiently for Shoot ‘Em Up 5, where Giamatti’s vengeful son is murdering carrot harvesters across the USA, burning their…

Recommended by: Marvin123 As satisfyingly silly and violent as I have seen a live-action cartoon get. “What’s up, doc? … Ooh, you’re a wascally wabbit … But you’re not wascally enough … Yeah? That’s a six-shooter. I just counted six shots. You’ve blown your load.” Marvin123 really put this movie into perspective for me when he noted that Shoot ’Em Up was inspired by Looney Tunes, and ‘Hard Boiled’. The Bugs Bunny references were obvious, but I did not notice how all the gunplay and running around with a baby was taken right out of my favorite John Woo action extravaganza. “My God! Do we really suck, or is this guy really that good?” (Quick Hits) – It is funny…

Paul Giamatti is always down with it. Always. Playing eccentric characters to a tee. His line delivery here is amazing.

Fuck it. Clive Owen mowing down 141 henchmen (yes I counted) with guns, knives, and carrots to protect a cute baby and Monica Bellucci from Paul Giamatti is everything I need and/or want in a movie.

FUK U One of the better vulgar macho edgelord cartoons from this era in part because it legitimately aspires to gun-fu wackiness and was shot by a Hong Kong legend who knows how to amp up that level of ridiculousness (like a series of extended ultraviolent gunfights over a baby that being thrown around in a bulletproof vest, or all the various murders by carrot) while still retaining some tangibility. Clive Owen’s straight face bugs bunny if he was really into Wolfmother and Motorhead should be way more annoying than he is and as is the concept of centering this around a gun control conspiracy, but despite all odds it’s quite fun. I also miss when we used to carve out a handful of roles a year for Paul Giamatti to just lose his damn mind on screen for about 20 minutes.

86 minutes of pure, unadulterated sadism. The kind of film that helps you sprout extra chest hair or a third nipple. A ferocious symphony of sneering homicidal cartoon violence led by the gentleman badass of the early ‘00s (Clive Owen) and the greatest mustache twirler alive (Bart Giamatti’s son). I don’t think I even need to mention that it’s DPed by the guy that did The Killer and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon …AND set to tunes like Nirvana’s “Breed” and Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades”? How about a sex scene with Monica Belucci? How about a sex scene with Monica Belucci mashed up with a violent hotel shoot out? How about Monica Belucci giving a trick a hummer in order…

All you need to know about this is that it’s less than 90 minutes and in the first 5 minutes Clive Owen kills a man with a carrot and says “eat your vegetables”

A film starring Clive Owen where he needs to protect a pregnant woman and her child in a pseudo-dystopic setting as goons from various factions hound them down for unknown reasons, this is essentially Children of Men if it was instead directed by a fourteen year-old who drank way too much pop and played way too much Call of Duty. That is because the answer to anything and everything in here is to shoot it. Door locked? Shoot ’em up. Umbilical cord needs cutting? Shoot ’em up. Paul Giamatti aiming a sniper rectile on your baby’s head? Shoot ’em up. (but not the baby!) “Guns don’t kill people! But they sure help.” All thrills and no frills, Shoot ‘Em Up…

“Fuck you, you fucking fuckers”. Sometimes you have to just sit back and admire a film that continually pushes the boundaries both on an action front and on a blackly comedic level. Michael Davis’s film deftly does both as from the moment Clive Owen cracks his first one-liner and then swiftly dispatches a henchman with a carrot, you know this isn’t going to be your average action film. Shoot ‘Em Up never lets up for a second. From the opening sequence that introduces Owen’s good Samaritan attempting to rescue a pregnant woman from a gunman to a fitting end which sees yet more carrots involved, this chase movie doesn’t do things by half. It has more action than a Jason…

Sublime videogame surrealism laced with tongue in cheek taking-the-pissness covered in nubile Belluccicana and finished with equal measures of gun porn and carrots. And Paul fucking Giamatti.

Every line in this film is the dumbest one liner in someone else’s action film. Paul giamatti has been wasted in critically acclaimed drama roles. He should exclusively do schlock like this. It was in heavy rotation for highschool Me, and highschool me was right it’s a banger

16 year old me thought this kicked more ass than anything I had ever seen. Expected a bit of a “Wanted” situation where adult me rewatches it and thinks it’s fine but turns out, outside of some poor attempts at edginess, it still kicks a lot of ass!

Kind of ridiculous but complementary I guess. Had me laughing and kept me watching the whole thing wanting to know what happens next so I guess that’s a positive. Just a little repetitive was all

Dumb, one-note, and designed for 2007 emo and goth teens who want to be edgy. The story amounts to scenes of characters bitterly quipping at each other until another ridiculous shootout inevitably happens.

Nothing makes sense, movie itself keeps pointing out holes in plot and its flaws but it worked out great. at some point you might feel like it’s parody to action movies. It’s a great stupid movie that walks on the line between trash and masterpiece but seems like it succeeded as being a watch worthy movie!
-
C
Unbelievably badass action dragged down by an epic bacon script that could have only been written in the late aughts. And it’s clear Giamatti is giving it like 30% but he still smokes this role.

Oh no, sir. No, no, I am not. I’m a tough guy with a pussy in my hand. The epic highs and lows of the American action film derived to the key points: no nonsense protagonist with a dark and shady and unknown past doing unrealistic flips and jumps and gun porn for the greater good (those around him and anti-societal-bull), the creepy and misogynistic antagonist that loves murder and death and hates everything good in the world, the down-on-her-luck…

I saw this in theaters. I went with my GF at the time and 2 other friends. I kept changing seats until they decided they were done moving. So I sat alone the whole film. That was the apotheosis of overstimulation in one of the most coked up action movie that i’ve ever seen. POETICO. The best scene to me was him having sex with Monica Bellucci standing while shooting all the guys, still with Monica on his dick, killing like 20 men and delivering one of the best line of the century: “Talking about shooting your load…” I feel like this movie gave me brain damage

One of those movies I’ve seen once, but haven’t seen in like 20 years, so it basically felt like a fresh watch. Over the top and dumb and fun, and I wish Paul Giamatti did more villain roles.

Soy simple.

Kind of terrible but also knows exactly what it is and just focuses on being entertaining from start to finish. It never even pretends to have a plot or expository scenes, Clive Owen just decides to protect a baby and gets into absurd bullshit scenarios where he has to shoot 1000 dudes until it decides to end. Very tightly paced with a set-piece every few minutes, the camera work is genuinely good and the stunts are fun (although the special…

This is my kind of stupid. I love that they cast the most serious grumpy British man fresh off of Children of Men. That shows they knew what they were going for. Dare I say this is the Naked Gun of the 2000s? Nah probably not but putting Clive Owen in basically a comedy role was the move.
-

Guy Ritchie remakes Raising Arizona! Clive Owen totally uses a literal “hand-gun” in the end. Totally wild stuff. BONUS: This has some of the best rock songs to set the action scenes to. Excellent needle drops.

One of the fastest paced action movies i have ever seen. Over the top, borderline ridiculous and pretty funny at times. Not particularly my cup of tea, but still lotta fun and original enough. Premise is kinda ok, the Buggs Bunny angle is actually not bad. Giamatti is brilliant and Owen is cool as needed. At the same time it was all a bit too much for me.

The original John Wick. Honestly, despite being a psuedo-parody that launched 8ish years before the genre it was subverting, this film holds up brillently. Solid performances, solid action, and a screenplay that’s sharp about getting characters from shootout to shootout. If you like watching 200+ guys get merc’d by a wise-cracking character actor, this is a great entry in that growing genre.

“What’s up, Doc?” – Mr. Smith A bizarre, live action, Rated R Bugs Bunny film that wasn’t completely my cup of tea. However, if dark comedy is your thing, then I think this would be right up your alley, and I will admit the random moments of comedy I did get a kick out of. I just wish that I didn’t feel so distant from Smith as a character and cared more about the romance between him and DQ. I…
