It’s called Shogun and in the first 5 minutes they show a gun, that’s art. that’s cinema.

So, this was a very new and interesting experience for me. Prior to this show, I had already seen the Mofune/Chamberlain miniseries, and I liked it alright, but I felt I was missing something. I liked it but there were a lot of contexts I felt I was missing. So, for this new re-adaptation, I decided to read the book and actually finished it a week before starting the show, which technically I’ve seen twice as I watched the first episodes on my own and then watched the whole thing with my mom. And personally, I think I love the series more than the book. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the book. I believe I gave it 4…

”So, I sent a woman to do what an army never could.” FX’s Game of Thrones. More than House of the Dragon ever tried. FX finally made something truly exciting and groundbreaking in drama with Shōgun since Fargo. What makes this story is so exciting that the language (barrier) is the main character. The tension and the conflicts relies on it. Brilliant. Don’t expect epic battles or exaggerated promises, it’s a slow-burner and based on political war. The production is majestic, it’s really stunning to see Feudal Japan with its all glory. The whole cast is a bucket of gem and finally Hiroyuki Sanada got the lead role that he deserved before. Truly a legend. It ends with the classiest ending possible! Truly unexpected and poetic. Toranaga is a legit mastermind!

When you play the game of shōguns, you win or you commit seppuku. There is no middle ground.

“Flowers are only flowers because they fall. But thankfully, the wind.” It was never about the battles, swords, land, or cannons. It was about the people. Brilliant choice for a finale to be almost completely focused on character. A great choice for most of the show to focus on character too anyway. Their words and stares were usually more piercing than any dagger. It’s a collection of unbelievable performances with Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis easily leading the pack. There was so much to love here and I’m honestly sad it’s actually over. I’m not sure if there will be more but I hope there isn’t. This was near perfect. I understand disliking the finale but I honestly understood it. There’s no need for any more bombastic spectacle beyond the wonderful performances the show provides anyway. Show of the year so far.

The best series I ever watched. It is just brilliant. They took a high risk to stick to japanese language, but it paid off. You feel like you are exploring a new culture during the series. Cast is brilliant and the story is still entertaining, although this wasn’t the first series related to Shogun. The dialogues are incredibly multilayered. You can easily watch the series multiple times.

Japanese Game of thrones…….pretty good, but I expected more action… atleast in the finale. Still I’ll wait for the second season to actually judge the entire series. May this season was a build up for an awesome second or maybe even third season. If this was the case …..then this was a pretty good build up. Pretty good season after all.

Felt like in medieval Japan all the way to my bones. The acting, set design, production, and direction were brilliant. This miniseries keeps you glued to the screen. I really hope they don’t make a second season, though. Some things need to remain a mini-series.

Felt such immense tension while watching this show, and this has been missing from my life for a long time, it’s so fucking greattt I can’t even describe it, plot, dialogues, cinematography, and the political treachery it’s an absolute masterpiece

Lately, my movie reviews have been turning into nothing but criticism of Asian cinema. At first, this series seemed potentially interesting to me. The setting of feudal Japan, with some foreigner suddenly finding himself there, sounds like it could make for a pretty interesting story. Unfortunately, my expectations were quickly shattered. Overall, I found the series rather boring. It tries to be some kind of Japanese Game of Thrones, but it falls short, because the events unfold far too predictably…

Finally finished over 2 years. It’s really well made craft wise. The story is engaging for the most part but it just lacks that something special for me. Even though the last 3 episodes are amazing. Too many characters become important too late, it can be a bore at times, and some things are just too on the nose. I can’t see it more than just great.

It’s hard to watch after enjoying the book so thoroughly. I feel like they squeezed out everything that made the book so amazing. It was never really about the great war plans, or to be fully candid the ‘plot’ at large. The point was cultural differences, the friction it creates, and a foreigner overcoming this friction. Almost all the scenes of the book were in service to these, and communicated the ideas in such a way that made the characters…

It was beautiful seeing 2 story’s unfold. The story of John coming to Japan and the story of Toranaga’s plan. The last episode made me realise that his plan was being build all the way from episode 1. And how in episode 1 he says he does not want to be shogun, but the finale shows that was the core of his plan all along. And John’s story was so good, seeing how he adapted, left his old life behind…

MY BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH THIS SERIES IS THE CONSISTENT USE OF ENGLISH DIALOGUE DESPITE THE CHARACTERS CONSTANTLY STATING THEY’RE CONVERSING IN PORTUGUESE Aside from that everything else is top notch quality, especially the performances and production value.

“The term shōgun (将軍; lit. ‘army commander’) is the abbreviation of the historical title sei-i taishōgun (征夷大将軍): 征 (sei, せい) means “conquer” or “subjugate”, and 夷 (i, い) means “barbarian” or “savage” i.e. the Emishi etc. outside imperial influence; 大 (dai, だい) means “great”; 将 (shō, しょう) means “commander”, and 軍 (gun, ぐん) means “army”. Thus, a literal translation of sei-i taishōgun would be ‘Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force Against the Barbarians’. The term originally referred to the general who commanded…

Just wow! This show is incredible on so many levels. The acting, the beautiful texts, the score, the attention to detail and authenticity, the care put into making the feodal Japan culture seem so foreign and mysterious, and yet so beautiful for its commitment to values. I heard that FX are doing another season, advancing James Clavell’s stories beyond anything previously shown on screen, and I am very much looking forward to that. But if there was never to be another season, I will be fully content with what I have just watched.

A genuinely great series: historically accurate without ever inflating itself into “big cinema” spectacle for its own sake. Every scene earns its place, and the tension builds masterfully throughout. The setting also feels refreshingly unworn, a period and world that hasn’t been done to death

A Game of Shogi So I finally finished my first season watch of ‘Shogun’, and its hard to find words to describe my feelings about this piece. I am gonna try anyways. So from what I understand, the FX series is based on James Clavells novel ‘Shogun’, which I haven’t read. There also has been a series realisation before this show that I haven’t seen, as well, so all that follows is solely based on what I’ve seen in the…
