a takedown of bureaocracy that honestly believes we can do better, that we’re capable of more…instead of blame and anger this presents an optimistic vision of a world where evil comes from pain and sadness but can be dealt with, most people are not evil, just ignorant or flawed, where we all make mistakes but ultimately can rise above them. bless this for being so full of hope and the beauty of humanity, not of humans as individuals with backstories but as a connected group of quirks and facial expressions and body language and feelings, individuals but part of a collective. this is bizarre and funny and heartbreaking, immersive and energetic. we jump in with both feet and don’t stop…

Opens as a bureaucratic farce, with lanyard nerds moving from boardroom to slightly bigger boardroom while civilian lives are being lost–most interesting is how Anno and Higuchi capture their futility in the filmmaking, very few compositions in each of the setups match so that the visual information is always slightly shifting (not dissimilar from the dialogue, a bunch of contributing voices not really saying much of anything) while the off-rhythm rapid cuts don’t allow you the proper time to even process any information of any kind, putting us in lockstep with the characters’ sense of overwhelming panic–and then slowly transitions into an optimistic ode to our ability to collectively overcome our fears. Mankind is a chaotic, impractical mess of lone wolves, nerds, troublemakers, outcasts, academic heretics and general pains-in-the-bureacracy… but together, we’re capable of some pretty extraordinary things.

Feels weird to watch a movie where a country chooses to unite together in the face of an existential threat, rather than be ripped apart by bureaucracy, psuedoscience, and factionalism.

Maybe only Anno could have made something so weirdly modern, a simultaneously sincere and completely absurd anti-kaiju that begins as a nightmare bureaucratic comedy of errors then pivots to fully embrace a collectivist Japanese spirit of ingenuity, all of it a reflection of the country’s psychic fallout from Fukushima. And that’s setting aside the terrific CG version of suit-mation (I know, I’m as surprised as you are). Not necessarily the most exciting movie, but certainly one of the most fascinating and engaged films in the long history of this series.

Love a movie where the real monster isn’t the colossal radioactive dinosaur, but the dinosaurs that run our governments. Happy Birthday Godzilla!

Nations of the world join forces with Japan to fight against the most vicious kaiju that men ever created: Bureaucracy. Godzilla also shows up.

I loved the running joke of everyone in the Japanese government perpetually demanding that they move to yet another special conference room as Tokyo gets owned.

Not quite the slam dunk I was hoping for, but i enjoyed it as a different take on godzilla. Also when the action music kicks in for a scene of bureaucrats making phone calls I was absolutely losing it

Cool Godzilla design and atomic breath scene but very slow and boring at times

Love all of the board room relocating etc while the city gets demolished. Seems correct. Also it absolutely fried me (purple beamed me) that some music from Neon Genesis Evangelion is used in here. How fun.

Horrible nasty Godzilla and a government who almost stall themselves into letting the US complete the nuclear hat trick. Probably the only Godzilla movie I find both actually funny and scary.

I came into this movie with high expectations. Godzilla is admittedly silly, but from what I had heard, this movie sort of breaks that standard. It really does. The tension is there for real, and you can genuinely feel each and every critique to the Japanese Government. It’s almost annoying watching it in the beginning, nothing can be done without chains of bureaucracy. One person needs permission to get permission for something, who then needs to tell the PM about…

I was never gonna be prepared for Godzilla’s first form with the googly eyes and nubs for arms

perfectly creates the idea of godzilla as this monumental and unstoppable being, the retribution of human ambition and the consequence of war. I genuinely love how it focuses on the inability for the chain of command to function and the 1 step forward 2 back with each act and the dysfunction of the corporate cespool. The visuals are incomparable. And the way in which you are convinced to feel empathy for this caamity that is godzilla creates a perfect narrative with a complete film structure and purpose. I love it

P
I’ll just refrain from saying anything negative and just focus on what I liked. I’m pretty sure Godzilla as a whole just isn’t for me 🤷🏼♂️ they all seem like the same movie over and over. Anytime Godzilla was on the screen, he was straight aura farming. The CGI looked pretty good. I loved the sound design so much. The purple laser beam thing sounded incredible. I have a feeling this was making fun of how the government is run?…

A movie that lets you know exactly how much time it takes to reach the wrong decision and how little time it takes for people to die entirely preventable deaths. I wonder what thats like?

feel bad for the godzilla thing a little i wish they went into why its destroying the place a little more but i understand that was likely due to the choice to frame godzilla more as an animal/ natural disastwr instead of a god that is sentient and can reason. american chicks english was funny i wish there were english subtitles for english speaking because everytime anyone spoke english it kinda was hard to switch from listening to the japanese to processing english.

“I won’t see a third bomb dropped on the country of my grandmother, who lived through it.” The real horror isn’t so much Godzilla as it is the bureaucracy of the Japanese Government. But for real, this was great. I am admittedly not super familiar with the Godzilla films of old, but this feels more like a modern production of one of those films, at least visually, juxtaposed with the dynamic of the Japanese bureaucracy and all the individual politicking,…

Surprised at how many Japanese actors I like that just kept popping up including a cameo from my goat Shinya Tsukamoto. I really wanted to like this more but this was a little too dry for my liking and falls on the Kamen Rider side of Hideaki Anno adaptations for me. I get that seeing a very logical and “realistic” side of the Japanese government dealing with this situation would be fun for some people but every character was written…

everyone who says the endless scenes of bureaucracy are useless are severly missing the point and they are weak links. if you can’t understand the point of the way that being mired in meetings over protocol even as the amount of officials in the room dwindles, you don’t deserve the “who will know?” scene. it’s like having to eat your vegetables before you can have dessert also how can you NOT like the scene where they’re doing a press conference…

Since I watched this film back in 2021 in has held a firm place as one of my top 5 movies I’ve ever seen. Despite not having a “main character” I find the humans of the film to be deeply engaging. This is one of my favourite iterations of Godzilla and I adore how Hideki Ano portrayed the beast. Making Godzilla a criticism of the Japanese government’s handling of the 2011 Fukashima disaster makes for an incredibly emotional and deep…

This is such a unique and creative take on Godzilla. I love the reimagining of the original metaphor, modernised by other Japan-based disasters such as the ones that took place in 2011. Something I’ve always loved about Godzilla was that he’s a misunderstood force of nature, humanised by the unseen audience but couldn’t possibly be by the unintended victims in the wake of his passive destruction. This Godzilla is alien and wrong and sad, and it’s beautiful.

Who thinks this is only a generic monster movie is wrong. Especially in the first half, this movie is mainly about the political hierarchy in Japan and how the Japanese political system works in scenarios which haven’t been there before (like a nuclear war 🤔😂). This is very clear by the different roles, not even sure who is in charge of what. Also, the floors in the building are a demonstration of power of the different roles. The higher, the…

I think it took a different view in how Godzilla is portrayed and I thought it was neat ! It seems like a sequel is never coming which sucks since I really liked the take on the world’s favorite kaiju, but alas maybe it was just that one story that wanted to be told.

I wouldn’t expect a political thriller out of a Godzilla movie but it was much better than I expected. By doing that, it also manages to avoid the cardinal sin of these movies: focusing too much on the human characters. There’s no weird romance, no awkward family drama, nothing like that and it rules. There are only two things scarier than Godzilla: bureaucratic red tape and the US Air Force.

Was mich allerdings gestört hat…

I don’t know what Godzilla is up to because no one ever tries to communicate with him, but I’m rooting for his success. God forbid a creature try to redecorate an entire city without the government interferring. The designs of Godzilla were so cool. I hope Satomi Ishihara (of Sadako 3D fame) does get elected president.

It’s a re:view, but as I only remember Godzilla’s googly eyes from the first time I saw it, I don’t think that matters. Anyway… It’s Godzilla as a cosmic horror, where his relentless path of destruction is equalled by the neverending beaurocracy nerfing the Japanese PM’s power to combat him. Smart thrills done well. Also bonus points for using the original roar and theme.

I’m fully on board for the core gimmick here. The nonstop, painful assault of Aaron Sorkin-ism and bureaucracy is hilarious and leads to some great gags: having a meeting to decide to have another meeting in a separate conference room; a political operative’s temporary job assignment being so long that it needs two title cards that each eat two-thirds of the screen. (I can admittedly understand why some people check out because of it; there is a tidal wave of…

After 45 minutes, I thought the concept was good and interesting, but it seemed like we’d already covered everything. And there was still an hour and 15 minutes left. I didn’t have high hopes for the rest of the film, but it quickly made me eat my words. Once I got used to the different, strange and… overall cheap-looking and not particularly successful special effects, that’s when I really started to enjoy the film. I wasn’t expecting two hours of…

While not as emotionally resonant as I found Minus One to be, the depiction of Godzilla here as an unstoppable force of pure destruction is one of the best I’ve ever seen from this franchise. The Big G has never been more terrifying, and I actually found the political angle Shin Godzilla takes to be really enjoyable.

The look in his eyes tells me that he didnt even know he was Godzilla. One of the most fascinating versions of the big guy. I saw a post the other day comparing this iteration of Godzilla to a natural disaster and it wasn’t until halfway through that the 2011 Japan tsunami was only a few years before this and clearly the inciting moment in the gestation of these ideas of absolute government inadequacy. Survival is possible but not by following those we’ve chosen to lead. At times it plays like an almost Dr. Strangelove companion piece.

Godzilla at his most unique which I appreciated. I really liked the different direction taken with Godzilla, watching him evolve into this towering terrifying monster. I really liked how this movie focused on the Japanese government’s response to Godzilla. It really grounded the unimaginable travesty of a Kaiju attack into the political, economic, and humanitarian stakes of disaster response faced by governments in the real world. There isn’t a clear solution to any of the problems, nor do they know the details yet, but a room full of people are tasked with leading the nation through this. I feel like another really grounding element was the film’s use of found footage. I also really like how goofy the design of Godzilla is at the beginning.

Hi I’m making another comment because I geniunely love this movie so much. Even if you’re not a fan of the monsterverse in general I highly recommend you watch this movie. I love it when monster movies potray the monster as a sympathetic creature that is simply acting like an animal and Godzilla is the perfect creature to depict that trope. God I can go on about this movie for ages but I will stop myself here please watch it.

This movie was so sick

It starts slow, but moves faster as circumstances become more and more urgent. Unimpressive visually, but by no means bad. Shin Godzilla presents a scathing rebuke of bureaucracy, political self-preservation, and the general precedence of covering one’s butt over doing the right thing in government. It also portrays people’s potential to do better through cooperation, selflessness, and seeking the best outcome rather than merely preventing the worst.

I am glad I watched this after watching all of Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV show and films) recently. I could tell from the first few frames that Hideaki Anno was involved. This is practically a live action Evangelion film. Some of the shots looks straight from the TV show, and in the case of Shinji Higuchi, the films.

This really is one of the best Godzilla movies, it’s so close to being in 3rd, or maybe even 2nd place for me, but the first half of this movie (and second half to an extent) are so damn talky that it brings it down considerably for me. However, everything else in this movie is amazing and it has debatably the greatest Godzilla scene of all time so I can’t complain TOO much
2 -
J
Shin Godzilla is one of the most unique entries in the entire Godzilla franchise, and it stands out less as a typical monster movie and more as a political disaster film with a kaiju at its center. The film reimagines Godzilla as a constantly evolving, almost biological nightmare who’s unsettling, unpredictable, and far more grotesque than the classic versions. Its transformation stages are genuinely disturbing, especially the early forms, which feel less like a “monster” and more like nature going…

It’s an interesting idea to make this about bureaucratic maneuvering and malfunction, and maybe somebody like Soderbergh could have pulled it off, but this version of it — esp. with the incredibly hyperactive editing — isn’t doing it for me. The first fire-spewing scene is fucking amazing though.

Klassischer Godzilla.

I’m glad I watched Godzilla vs. Biollante first. Going from I’m kinda rooting for this cutie to YUCKWHATISTHAT was a strong contrast. In addition to a much scarier Godzilla, Shin has a much darker tone. Focusing on the political response to an ongoing disaster with the constant threat of U.S. military over-involvement was successfully engaging. I feel sad for the fish that slid across the city, bleeding everywhere and destroying everything in it’s path. Sad for it, but scared of it, too.

Genuinely one of the most horrific Godzillas.

The creature design does exactly what it needs to: make me not want to meet it in a hallway. I had a great time with this.
