The astonishing thing about Seven Samurai is that it seems far too modern for a film made sixty years ago. As much as I love black-and-white films, it is hard to deny that some films, no matter how good they are, begin to seem antiquated when compared with modern films in their genre. But Seven Samurai can still compete with action films today. Perhaps its length and the amount of time spent on characterization and story may put off some of the audience, but the film’s grip on viewers is undeniable. You can’t stop watching it until the end. The cinematography plays no small part in creating an atmosphere so rich in its historical accuracy, yet curiously modern. Each scene…

“This baby is me, this is what happened to me.” violence is endless and the repercussions eternal, the flames rage on as the innocents die. however, what Kurosawa also realises is that violence is the coolest thing that you can ever capture on celluloid. that central dichotomy, the merging of visceral horror and shameful pleasure at the sight of violence, is part of what makes Seven Samurai so timeless. one second, you’ll witness the sadness of a dying innocent, the other you’ll be cheering the slaughter of an enemy combatant. either way, a mother loses their child, a child loses their father.

I’ve seen a lot of Kurosawa, but this is the longest one and, because of that, the least dynamic for me. Rashomon, Yojimbo, and Throne of Blood are tighter. But the cinematography and lighting are absolutely incredible.

It’s absolutely crazy that this was made 72 years ago. But I don’t think it’s right to take that into consideration while giving it a rating, for I do not hold any grudges against grain or lower picture quality. I can only rate based on the script, acting, visual appeal and emotional effect. And it’s the last point that results in a lower rating. *refuses to elaborate* I think that approaching every movie as if it came out today, while…

“I think talking is a good thing. Whatever your burden may be, talking can ease it. You, for example, seem pretty tight-lipped, but if you’re suffering, you shouldn’t bottle it up. Letting your feelings out bit by bit can work wonders.” Toshirō Mifune playing a crazy bad ass motherfucker is something I didn’t know I needed Every action movie from the 80s onwards owes everything to this

“The farmers only choice is to endure.” Really enjoyed this, it’s my first Kurosawa and I get the hype. I was shocked at how big this felt even when shot within a square format, goes to show the mastery with the camera. Also Kikuchiyo broke my heart and made it full.

There were too many unnecessary scenes in this movie. The first half were the building blocks for the impressive last 45 minutes of the film which made this viewing enjoyable.

I rented the three-disc set from Movie Madness, since I’d recognized the title and have been meaning to watch Kurosawa. And oh my god, wow. Once more we survive. This movie is 3.5 hours long but holds the whole way through. Full of memorable lines, heart-wrenching character development, and perfectly executed action sequences. Kikuchiyo became a favorite character for me. I love a complex character that actually feels human. This movie is so good ohmygod.

spectacular mix of dumb and brilliant. funny that if you take Toshiro Mifune out, basically the entire film is serious. and dramatic. and then there’s just a rapacious oaf, haunting the narrative, getting up to hijinks. there’s genuinely nothing like it at this level of craftsmanship! imagine if Citizen Kane was exactly the same, but for occasional interruptions by Chaplin’s The Tramp, getting paint buckets stuck on his head, rescuing puppies, dangling from clocks, so on. would it be the same movie?? i suspect not!!

This feels like the contrarian take here, but Seven Samurai was my least favorite of the four Kurosawa films I’ve seen thus far. That’s not to say that it wasn’t a good film. It paved the way for larger-scale action sequences with the muddy mountain scenes perfectly choreographed and shot in such a gritty style. The cinematography was also impressive, showing the sprawling landscape of the village in a beautiful way. However, it definitely did not feel like an undisputed major…

Absolutely phenomenal. Long, yes, but it’s the way the movie takes its time and explores the world as the characters experience it that makes it so special. The characterisations are great and the moments of dialogue and humour – ranging from spoken gags to near slapstick at times – make the film both engaging and somehow feel so real even when it strays away from what might be considered a realistic film.
