Synopsis

Johan and Marianne are married and seem to have it all. Their happiness, however, is a façade for a troubled relationship, which becomes even rockier when Johan admits that he's having an affair. Before long, the spouses separate and move towards finalizing their divorce, but they make attempts at reconciling. Even as they pursue other relationships, Johan and Marianne realize that they have a significant bond, but also many issues that hinder that connection.

“we love each other in an earthly and imperfect way.” [watched six episode mini-series] bergman has a very specific way of capturing pain. he lingers on the faces, closing in so their expressions are the only thing taking up the screen. their teary eyes. their trembling lips. their red cheeks. he traps us with them, forcing their pain onto us. their pain is not only theirs, but is ours. as you’re watching, bergman forces you to think of all the times you’ve felt like this. it’s visceral and confronting. it’s almost as if you’re watching two films: the one bergman has laid out in front of you, and the one that plays in your mind – the memories and fears that your brain conjures while watching this overwhelmingly human and painful tale. bergman’s masterpiece, and one of the most essential anti-romance stories ever brought to screen.

I can’t tell if this is a deeply painful and cynical film, or a deeply painful and romantic one. No one is happy in this film, but in the end, some semblance of connection seems to have survived. It shows marriage to be a psychologically difficult enterprise, a bleak and angry settling, a series of lies and pretensions. It utterly destroys marriage. It rips it to shreds. And yet, in the end, two people come together and comfort each other. They know each other. They understand each other, it seems, perhaps. Not enough can be said about the two lead performances here. That there are barely any scenes with any other performers was surprising to me; the film felt full.…

“Scenes from a Marriage” is distinct among divorce films for depicting the subtle destruction wrought from endurance at all costs. Ingmar Bergman’s multi-year spanning drama, initially made for Swedish television, depicts fragments of a couple’s relationship as it is subject to time, and those passing through it together. While they may put on pretences for others – and themselves – Bergman is unyielding with his imposition on the pair’s intimacy by the viewer. Marianne and Johann arrive to the audience in a marriage fully formed. This is aided by the long offscreen friendship of actors Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson. In the first third of the film – there is little feeling that the audience is interrupting any of their…

Scenes from a Marriage (1974): The Marriage After Marriage I know what I feel. I love you in my selfish way. And I think you love me in your fussy, pestering way. We love each other in an earthly and imperfect way. Well, this is not an easy film. It is such a raw and messy film and to be honest, this won’t be a short review either. This film is not simply about the collapse of a relationship. Across its six parts, it gradually asks what remains when the idea of marriage disappears. Part I, “Innocence and Panic,” presents the illusion of happiness. Johan and Marianne appear comfortable and deeply connected, yet their interview about their marriage already reveals…

This film is compared to Marriage Story a lot but they are very different in how it makes the audience feel. Marriage Story is sad. It’s an emotional journey where I’m in the room crying and walking away with a new found appreciation for my fiance and love overall. Scenes from a Marriage is depressing. I didn’t cry and I didn’t emotionally connect with the two characters. I just walked away from the film depressed with no hope on love ever lasting. After the three hour movie; I turned it off, jumped in my car, and went to get ice cream to cheer myself up. Physical Collection Greatest Films of All Time

[theatrical version] Damn. Really wish I caught the 5 hour version first because I would have loved to sit and endure each and every detail of this relationship. Very rare for me to think something like that after spending nearly 3 hours with a movie that is entirely conversations, but Bergman’s way of capturing the pain in these characters was too real to not feel completely immersed. Liv Ullmann has so much truth in her performance, specifically in the Paula chapter. Nothing captures the magic of the movies quite like divorce!

“But it should be for pleasure, not obligation.” A seemingly isolated comment made by Marianne (played by Liv Ullman) when trying to evade an invitation for lunch with her parents. Spoken early and out of context, this sentiment comes to signify the moral centre of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage. I daren’t call this his masterpiece, as he had many, but this is undoubtedly a perfect film. It does what it says on the tin: we are witness to scenes from a marriage between Marianne and Johan (played by Erland Josephson). This rollercoaster of a relationship with highs and lows charts a similar course covered in other great works like Linklater’s Before Trilogy and Baumbach’s Marriage Story. But Bergman’s…

Ingmar Bergman’s epic mini-series, Scenes from a Marriage, is a brilliant, intimate observational study of a couple’s marriage. At the start of the film, Marianne (Liv Ullmann) and Johan (Erland Josephson) have been agreeably (if not always happily) married for ten years. Bergman’s film meets a couple that seems to have it all together, peels back the façade, and shows us the tension right under the surface. Ullmann and Josephson provide powerhouse performances, and their chemistry here is probably the best I’ve seen for a married couple in film. While watching Ullmann and Josephson at work here, I was reminded of Ullmann’s performance alongside Ingrid Bergman in Autumn Sonata, another Bergman film where two acting legends go toe-to-toe with raw,…

I’ve decided that I won’t allow myself to be spurred on to write a super long detailed review about this as one might be tempted to do by a 3 hour long film with such a high rating, but I honestly have only a few remarks anyway. This movie is so Scandinavian. Everything about their social, relational, and cultural dynamics is so foreign to me that it’s impossible for me to imagine reacting or discussing things the way they are…

“somos analfabetos emocionales” “uno ha descubierto su grandeza y otro su pequeñez” otro clásico de Bergman aunque esta vez no ha terminado de fascinarme como otras. Al ser un proyecto de 3 horas hecho como miniserie es muy difícil comprender todo a la primera y ha habido cosas que no he conectado del todo. Sin embargo un guión y unas actuaciones buenísimos. Necesitaré verla otra vez

This is definitely a weird comparison, but while I was watching this film I kept thinkinh that this could be the sibling of La Notte – two completely different films, yet they convey the same feeling. In the former, you watch a couple whose emotions for both partners have long since faded, yet a strange, almost invisible bond unites them; at the end of the movie, Giovanni’s feelings are rekindled, and he rediscovers his love for Lidia thanks to the…

Where do I even begin! Starting from a happy marriage, but it turns out he was in love with other women for four years. Liv Ullman performed the role perfectly, her performance was pure and moving. I watched this movie with my father and it captured the essence of a marriage, and that being the following: the relationship between a marriage is highly dynamic. Even Johan fidelity for Marianne was severely lacking, through out the story it always seemed it…

Perfectly devastating… A truly once in a lifetime performance from Liv Ullmann here. The way she stares into the camera when she is in bed after Johan leaves for Paris just breaks me into a million pieces. I love how close and intimate the camera makes you feel towards the characters. A perfect starting point for me in Ingmar Bergman’s filmography

It’s so fascinating what one can do with a room, a camera, 2 great actors and a beautiful script. I know that’s an oversimplification of it all but essentially that’s what it is. Such Naturalistic dialogue writing, such subtle yet effective blocking and intimate camera work and to top of it all of 2 fabulous actors who believe in the director and the material. Bergman understands people beyond what they are supposed to be, beyond what they are expected to be by themselves and by people around them, and it’s with this understanding he is able to craft deeply disturbing yet such soulful stories. 🙌🏻

I don’t think there’s anything better in showing us the many facets of love. Such an emotional roller coaster. Only pity is that the TV series is wellnigh impossible to find on region 2 discs. Am almost tempted to buy a multi-region player, but for now I make do with the film version. And I’m watching it back to back with Saraband, which I haven’t done before. Will be interesting to see whether that brings something extra to that film.

An extremely well-made low-budget, actor-centric portrayal of a marriage falling apart. I’m not surprised how influential this was to both Woody Allen and Richard Linklater with how effectively dialogue-heavy it is. And while I feel this walked so they could run, I don’t want to downplay how great and ahead of its time this is. I was also not aware that this and Fanny & Alexander have longer, miniseries-length versions that I’ll definitely watch when I rewatch both. This is not my favourite Bergman, but it’s a beautifully realistic portrayal of marriage and love. I’m happy being single for now lol

While I appreciate how this film forces us to experience the utter discomfort of how someone can hurt someone they care about, I was mostly struck by the thought that it takes a domestic violence victim, on average, seven attempts to finally leave their abusive partner. While that’s not the point of this film, the main character’s attempts to distance herself and the return of the two to each other are no different for me. Incredibly acted and brave in…

I genuinely thought I’d find this to be a long, miserable experience. To be fair, I was right. But I was also wrong. The writing, directing, and acting are so tight, so top-notch, that it’s impossible to look away. The movie is talk-heavy, like many Bergman films, but what talk! Scenes from a Marriage is the last major Bergman work I hadn’t seen. As rewarding as his films are, they can be utterly depressing and exhausting. I probably won’t be rewatching anytime soon, but I can see why there are so many masterpieces in his filmography.

SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE definitely left me a bit flummoxed at the end. The movie skillfully arrested my attention the entire runtime with its excellent dialogue, and the tragic conflict between the married couple was no doubt engrossing. The couple’s arc is difficult to watch, and the final conclusion might serve as closure for some, but off-putting for others.

Incredible. If you’d ever told me I’d once be glued to a screen 160 minutes for a marriage drama with just two persons talking, I’d say you overestimated me. Not for me, no no. But here I am, totally lived along with these two, cried with them. The writing of this is absolute top level, and then the acting; I don’t think I enjoyed a role so much as the performance here by Liv Ullman. So credible, so natural, so emotional. This is serious top-tier stuff. I’m floored.

I know it may seem controversial to many, but I never thought that marriage was a necessary tool to acquire. It does not make you complete, it does not romanticise your life any more and it doesn’t make your love any stronger. Commitment does not need to be bound by name or by a simple piece of jewellery you wear on your left ring finger. We are already capable of loving someone till time allows it. So why is it…

I can’t tell if this movie is making me excited for marriage or never want it. Their emotional honesty is what makes this so beautiful, but they’re so comfortable in their love that they don’t realize something is missing until someone else comes along and fills that ONE missing piece, and I think that’s the scariest part.

‎It may be deeply revealing of the society and marital culture bergman was observing, but i could not fully connect with its central conflict from within my own islamic social framework. . Bergman strips marriage of romance, morality, even dignity, until only two people remain, frighteningly articulate and completely incapable of understanding what they want from each other. The cruelty is rarely spectacular. It lives in timing, hesitation, politeness, in knowing exactly where the other person is weakest. Johan and Marianne destroy each other with the intimacy of people who have memorized the architecture of the wound. And still, somehow, love remains. Not as salvation, but as the last and most embarrassing thing they cannot get rid of.

Good movie for superficial relationship tension. The man was aloof and disconnected from the beginning. Not a surprise that he left got another woman, and the fact that they cheated on their future spouses together. Many compare this to marriage story and I disagree. In marriage story the pain is externalized. The emotional climax is a volatile, screaming match where words are weaponized in real time. It is dynamic, loud, and punctuated by sharp bursts of anger and desperate tears. Bergman’s work is an existential, psychological collapse. It acts as a “slow-burning candle of depression” because the decay happens from within, long before anyone speaks of divorce. They have suffocated their true selves to maintain a perfect facade. Also search the feminist analysis of this film,it’s eye opening.

Marriage collapse gets genuinely raw, unflinching stage to screen treatment, a couple’s decades long relationship dissected through brutally honest, escalating confrontation throughout the sprawling television production depicted. Nothing about their pain gets softened or explained away for easier consumption whatsoever. Performances carry raw, almost unbearable intensity throughout every confrontation depicted across the considerable runtime. The claustrophobic, intimate staging makes the escalating devastation feel genuinely, uncomfortably immediate throughout. This remains genuinely essential, difficult filmmaking, confident enough to sit with genuine marital collapse rather than offering comfortable resolution throughout its unflinching runtime. It did its job well enough tonight without asking a great deal of me in return.

There’s something quietly devastating about how it handles the strain hiding behind polite conversation. The way it lingers on the quiet after a funeral feels oddly beautiful. Beyond that, the camera lingers just long enough on the right details to let them breathe. So much of this comes down to the tension of an unspoken secret, handled in an unexpectedly tender way. The sound design does something genuinely interesting with empty space. Still turning parts of this over in my head hours later.
