This film starts off with the energy of those ultra violent Italian Poliziotteschi movies from the 70s Soon as the movie starts you get robbers with ski mask kicking the FUCKING door down during the drug deal, and it becomes some of the most chaotic shit I’ve seen to an intro to a film. A head explodes from a shotgun shell; someone’s FUCKING COCK gets shot THROUGH THE PANTS, one of the most savage intros to a film I’ve seen. It’s an overedited mess, but I fucking adore it. A lot of people may hate this film, but I loved this movie since I first seen it with my brothers. This film goes in so many directions with its Adderall…

Oh boy this was all kinds of a cliche mess to me and felt like the further fallout from Quentin Tarantino ripoffs of the late 90’s. Everything was hyperstylized like Tony Scott as they used so many different angles and camera movements as possible in padding out a film that should not have been this long to tell it’s limited tale. We get this sorted story of trying to follow this gun that our lead needs to get back that surprised me that it didn’t wind up in Forrest Gump’s hands for it’s travel journey. I couldn’t buy the crux of the story cause I feel unless you have an eye witness to the gun who would admit to being…

A modern day exploitation movie, that’s nasty and violent as all hell. It’s darker than you’d probably expect from what looks like, at first glance, a simple action movie starring Paul Walker. This really blew me away when I randomly rented it from a Redbox in 2007, along with Ultraviolet, lol. After being throughly disappointed by Ultraviolet, I threw this on in the middle of the night, and it didn’t take long for me to be shaken out of my late night drowsiness. This movie comes in like a shotgun blast through the door and never lets up after that. 2 hours of a manic, frenzied energy, all kicked off by a boy stealing a gun from Paul Walker that…

Brian O’Conner stars in this modern day Grimm’s fairy tale about the adventures of a little Russian-American Charlie Bronson, a desperate man who is in way too deep with the Mob, a missing gun, and multiple Big Bad Wolves. An opening straight outta King of New York. A nut-shot. A crackhead with a semi-unhealthy obsession with the Duke. A whacked-out hobo. Going down on Mrs. Bates. The chic that gets naked a lot on Banshee. A strip club. A MacDaddy pimp-slap. Between the eyes Southland style. A variation of the word Fuck used at least 328 times. A creepy apartment. An even creepier couple of creepers. Two sick-fucks get what they deserve. A Usual Suspect’s priceless MasterCard moment. Flaming cock.…

The ever-charming and kind-hearted Paul Walker turns into a rough-mouthed, angry criminal whose life is threatened when the friend of his child, who is growing up in abusive circumstances, shoots him with a handgun used to shoot a cop earlier that day. Walker’s Joey Gazelle is now on the run, trying to find that kid and recover the evidence before he gets caught and is sent to prison for good… or worse. Director Wayne Kramer channels Tony Scott in terms of its later visual/editing style in a way that often rivals the late filmmaker’s work, even though it lacks much of the substance of the director. Despite the story’s obvious derivative qualities, the twists and turns keep everything interesting, especially…

“YOU DON’T WALK OUT ON THE DUKE!” After a hit goes wrong and a cop is killed, Joey Gazelle (Paul Walker) stashes the gun. Things go off the rails when the neighbour kid Oleg (Cameron Bright) takes the weapon and uses it to shoot his abusive John Wayne loving step-father Anzor (Karel Roden). In the chaos that follows both Oleg and the gun go missing, and Joey heads off on a nightmarish odyssey to clean up the mess. On the negative side, this is a very dumb movie (you can already tell from the decision to name a main character Gazelle in a film called Running Scared). The hyper stylization is really cool but also often comes off as a…

Like Tony Scott made his own version of JERSEY SHORE, with a wild, mescaline freak out filtration of Grimm’s Fairy Tales washed through a scummy, breakneck crime picture. Very loud. Very much for me.

Running Scared has style and pizzazz coming out of its ears. Both narratively and visually, the film oozes vigour and panache with each twist and flashy transition. But the film is quiet about this – ensuring it ostensibly appears to be conventional. A crime/thriller that focuses on sleazy gangs sounds run-of-the-mill and Running Scared adopts this ordinary visage so the underlying, expressionistic, bubbling and novel style of Wayne Kramer’s product is much more jolting. Gripping, hypnotic and yes, definitely scattered, but I say this as a compliment. There is so much going on and so many reversals of rhythm and tone, but it’s done in a way that isn’t convoluted, but is gripping and digestible. Ever since his passing, I’ve…

I should be able to get behind something this digressive and silly and loaded with exuberant sleaze but there’s no real pulse here, just a series of empty vignettes. At least something like SIN CITY, which I find equally boring and garish, has the power of Frank Miller’s stupid personality. Somebody should take this script back in time to 1975 and give it to Fernando Di Leo.

The best part of this entire film is when Vera Farmiga saves three kids from a kid murdering couple…I think that says a lot about this film

I knew this was gonna be good when we got a Vera Farmiga whale tail in the first 5 minutes, hell yeah

Even as a Tarantino knock-off, Running Scared works because of its style/tone & performances by the ensemble including Paul Walker, who is giving what might be his best performance of his career. I do have some issues with the filmmaking, but it’s still entertaining for what it’s trying to accomplish. If nothing else, the ice rink and house sequence are the highlights from this film.

Narratively a taught nasty action thriller. Stylistically the most mid 2000s. Probably Paul Walker’s best performance. I heard Jonathan Zaurin discuss how much he liked this movie and its director. I discovered it had been released on 3D Blu Ray in Germany, so naturally that’s the version I had to import. Turns out the 3D is utterly pointless.

About twenty years ago I watched this film with a pal. Some alcoholic beverages were also present. The circumstances were almost identical now, and the results too. Some absolutely unhinged shit going on here.

It’s shot very akin to Man on Fire which I honestly hate. It’s so overly choppy and the colour grading is just crap. Similar also to Man on Fire that it is a solid plot and some really nice acting but the shakey camera style is very off putting. There’s also just a mental amount of stuff going on. They have a good plot and go and add 900 things to it. Poor ol Oleg couldn’t catch a break. All…

Never thought I’d see a Mastercard “Priceless” commercial bit about killing a dirty cop delivered by an actor who would be an extra in a Soprano’s porn parody. Then hockey players in full gear attack Paul Walker in a cosmic ice rink after a gang shootout. Wrapped in a nice tight bow as a honky cosplaying as a blaxploitation pimp mimics Tony Montana in a diner and fatally wounds Paul Walker.

It has that gross mid-2000s grainy, digital look that we had to endure for a decade. I forgot just how much happens in this movie – there’s way too many subplots/twists and turns – but it manages to maintain a surprising level of energy throughout.

ooh this was good! proving to myself that the 2000s had the best movies oat. I’m amazed with the entire style of this film, from the cinematography to the editing, and as a fellow editor i really loved every second of this. easily one of, if not the best Paul Walker’s performance (rip), and Teresa was such a badass here (also i was like wth is my sweet Juliet from Lost doing 😭)… the ending felt a bit off to me but nonetheless a great movie!

I don’t normally go for movies like this. My wife was a fan of stuff like The Usual Suspects and Reservoir Dogs, and Pulp Fiction. But I got bored with most mob stories. That said. There’s no bad ass assassin chick. I don’t care about Paul. And even the case summary doesn’t do anything for me. So I don’t know why I picked this up in the first place. I love that it’s a low budget film. I love how…

English: A nightmarish chase through the criminal underworld: a boy, a murder weapon, corrupt cops, and vicious gangsters. Oh, and a pair of repulsive psychopaths also get involved in Kramer’s thriller fairy tale, whose frantic pace is surpassed only by its unpredictability. The screenplay is bursting with ideas, time is running out, and the cast—led by Paul Walker, Vera Farmiga, Chazz Palminteri, and Karel Roden—performs as if constantly teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown. On top of that,…

This is the greatest “worst” movie I have ever seen! The editing and direction had me absolutely hallucinating. So much so that I actually want to watch this director’s other films! If anyone is reading this, it’s genuinely a 2 out of 5 but it’s just so badly entertaining that I can’t give it under a 4. I’m also proud to say this featured my home town!

this movie was so…weird. like in some scenes you can tell they were kind of trying for a horror sequence and to be fair, it definitely worked. i like just about everything about this movie except the dialogue, it doesn’t sound great but its not so bad i guess. i liked how grainy/gritty the movie looked, the plot twist was pretty cool too, but its not over the top and its not completely bad. 5.5/10

The intentional griminess and off-putting everything make Running Scared equally exhausting and eye-rolling. The frenetic camera work of a Crank movie mixed with the wince-inducing uber-machismo of a Joe Carnahan film and a couple random story excursions that do nothing but pad the running time and heighten the film’s sense of “edginess.”

I have no words to describe what I just witnessed, but I think I mostly loved this?? Paul Walker is absolutely wonderful here, delivering what is easily the best performance of his career. He’s a dramatic tour de force, bringing so much credibility to this ugly, relentless, hardcore gangster adrenaline rush of a film. The only reason this movie works as well as it does is because of him and the complete sincerity with which he commits to such utterly absurd material. This thing is absolutely bonkers. I think my mouth was hanging open for the entire last half hour. Highly recommend

Sometimes early 2000s me comes out to play, with nonstop frenetic editing, over the top performances, and a subplot that is so TWISTED you have to go to a black light ice rink and get hit in the face with neon pucks and a last minute TWIST to top it. I guarantee I thought this movie was pretty fucking cool when it came out à la Smokin’ Aces and I’ve grown since so now I recognize a lot of the actors and think, how did Wayne Kramer get so much clout, and why am I not watching the insanity that is Smokin’ Aces?

This is kind of a cool movie. It feels like a pretty good b movie, which when done right can be pretty awesome in a low budget way. Honestly I am only interested in this because of Paul Walker. He is very committed and does a great job with his character. The cast is actually pretty good with several well known actors. The editing is unique but does work overall. I think this movie is underrated/underappreciated and will have a following as time goes on.

This might be the single worst movie I’ve ever seen. It’s not even so bad it’s funny. It doesn’t have a low budget, it doesn’t have amateur actors. It’s genuinely insulting. I would give it zero stars but letterboxd doesn’t show that. This excuse of a film has extremely dark topics and it handles them probably in the worst way I’ve ever seen. It’s an insult to the people that actually go through those things. No point in talking about…

Frantic is the best way to describe this movie- in both positive and negative ways. It’s an absolutely panicked film that has small pockets of calm to catch your breath before tossing you right back into the madness. This is amplified by the editing which is very of its times and extremely high energy. It’s like if you took the speed and motion of an Edgar Wright production but gave it some speed you found in the alley. I don’t…

I went from watching the 1974 political thriller The Parallax View to this, under the category “Reddit recommended twisty thrillers”. Quite the whiplash! This movie is so cranked up, action-packed, overstuffed, silly, pungent. Like a loud stinky cheese I keep reaching for. I really got onboard by the halfway point. There are some scenes / imagery in this that will definitely stick in the memory. When the movie was over, I actually played it again and enjoyed that first half much more

Frenetic New Jersey-set grimm-fairytale with an absolutely furious performance by Paul Walker as mob-guy, Joey Gazelle, tasked to get rid of a pistol used to kill a dirty cop. When the gun goes missing in the worst circumstances possible, Walker spends the night turning the city upside down to find it. A bruised colour-palette, lunatic camera-work and Vera Farmiga killing it, RUNNING SCARED’s cult status is wholly deserved.

I was blown away by the fast-paced style right from the very first minutes. What follows is a wildly exciting and fast-paced journey through the night in search of a murder weapon, featuring remarkable supporting characters and plot twists. The camera shots and editing are fun and the look of the film is gritty, just like the hood and the folks in it. Paul Walker as a petty criminal and Verga Farmiga as his wife really stand out.
