It’s just so simple, assemble a crew, get a briefcase, tentions run high, can’t trust this one, can’t trust that one, bang, bang, car chase, boom! You gotta love it, I did, and I still do after all this time. Brilliant cast, I mean, you got Reno, De Niro, Jonathan Pryce, Natascha McElhone, Sean Bean and Stellan Skarsgard…what more do you want? It’s straight to the point here. No fancy special effects or color corrections, just good choreography and stuntwork. I’ve said it back then, and I’ll say it again, “Ronin” has the best car chases, period.

An old school action thriller that has a passable story with decent twists and one big MacGuffin, however the stylish craft, fantastically executed car chase-shooting-explosion sequences, great soundtrack and one hell of a cast do the redeeming job and keep it entertaining enough. “Yeah, well, either you’re part of the problem or you’re part of the solution, or you’re just part of the landscape.”

This thing is cool and suave as fuck. Specialized strangers are hired to do a job, shit hits the fan and things get real messy and untrustworthy. There’s plotting, scheming, backstabbing, vagueness, ulterior motives, snappy dialogue and an abundance of awesome car chases. Ronin is one hell of a good time that totally delivers! Euro trash crime always hits! 🇺🇸🏴🇮🇪🇫🇷🇩🇪🇷🇺💼📦🚘💥🔫

Mamet and Frankenheimer possessed by Melville is basically crack to a film-nerd sociopath in love with genre hyperspecificity like me.

it really amazes me how much my taste has changed since i first saw this back in 2018: at that point, i considered this a competently-made but boring thriller, nothing that special. now, after wading through the filmographies of michael mann, walter hill, johnnie to and jean-pierre melville, ronin’s specific quality of extremely tactical and legible action, terse and measured hardboiled dialogue by david mamet, and stacked cast of excellent 90s performers are things that i can now fully appreciate and respect. ronin focuses on my highest cinephilic obsession, men who live by a code, not a moral code, but a code of action, a code of presentation, a stripped-down bare-bones way of life, a way of encountering with a…

Yeah sex is cool but have you ever watched a movie about hyperprofessional crooks exchanging brusque dialogue in between white-knuckle car chases?

Glad to have made this my first experience at the New Beverly: a lot of B-side leftovers from Heat (warrior codes among world-weary professional criminals) and Mission Impossible (the cutthroat economy of plans-within-plans espionage) but punched up by an entire weight class by the God Frankeheimer channeling some gritty, blunt American thrills and destruction and some prime Mamet tough guy dialogue; he ambushed Mr. Raspberry Jam with coffee! Legit 80s levels of civilian collateral damage, loud squib-heavy shootouts, a cartoonish number of double-crosses and some of the sickest driving ever done on the streets of France. The setpieces are so fast, chaotic and dangerous-looking they completely earn the Friedkin comparisons. [35mm] Full discussion on ep 85 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.

die schauspieler haben zu sehr geschauspielert, was die sache teilweise absurd und trashy hat aussehen lassen dazu kommt dass die charaktere keine synergie bilden und eher zusammengewürfelt daherkommen

” You ever kill anybody? I hurt somebody’s feelings once” Sam: I hurt somebody’s feelings once Wow how can I even begin I mean its 120 minutes of car chases shootouts and a really but I mean really great cast with De Niro and Reno as leads This film has that late 90s early 2000s flick set in Europe it has great dialogue It feels to me like a mix between john woo films and the films of Melville if you can watch it plesse do its really really great

car chase scenes unreal for the time

Stacked cast and the comparison between samurai/ronin and former special ops members is cool

Me he dado cuenta que una persecución de vehículos sin música y sin diálogos es bastante aburrido.

Some of the greatest car chase action I’ve ever seen in film

I watched it with my dad a long time ago; I didn’t remember it being so interesting.

La cantidad de daño colateral que hay en esta película es increíble. Podría ser mejor pero es muy entretenida. Lo que más me llama la atención es que es de fines de los 90 pero parece de principios.

“Whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt. That’s the first thing they teach you.” Man this movie fucking rocks. Kicks off from the very beginning and keeps the pace. Robert De Niro is a legend man top 5 greatest actors ever idc. He can command any screen and capture any script he wants. Now this script/screenplay is awesome. Everyone actor got something cool/suave to say and they play into it so well. Cast is stacked with great performance…

I mean… that’s just lazy writing.

De Niro and Reno are doing some good shit here and the movie is perfectly watchable but eh. The cast features three different ways of pronouncing -ean words: Sean, Bean, Jean. Fascinating stuff.

This 70s-vibed, stacked-cast, pure vibes movie was wasted on 11 year old me – give me 3x this of Robert DeNiro driving that car through Paris.

Word to the wise; on continental Europe everybody in a cafe drinking espresso is an assassin. Have your wits about you as it could get tasty. Sneakily great body count in this, lot of stupid innocent bystander plebbos blown to bits for our entertainment lol.

I did t really care for this. The car chases last so long!

A few cliches and structural things keep it from greatness, but the action, car chases, and performances are still solid.

90s action thrillers, man. There just isn’t much like them these days. Stacked cast. Car chase sequences that are right up there with The French Connection in terms of sheer quality. Just an absolute unit. Simple and intriguing premise, quality writing, great action sequences.

Love seeing deniro in a role like this. Love this schlubby heist team.

The first 30 minutes is a clumsy exposition in which you can observe the lowest chemistry between characters who happen to be played by great actors. Then De Niro takes over and it immediately becomes very watchable. The whole script is a mess but you can tell that it had a very interesting concept. But the car chases – one of the best there are.

Each major car chase gets a full star on their own. Hell the last one is worthy of 3 stars by itself. The script is negative stars for me though. I know it’s Mamet (at least a good chunk) but man this feels like it was written by European who watched a lot of American action movies and then threw many of the cliches and archetypes into a hodge podge stew just to see what would come out. Loved that it was filmed in fun locales and real places but Jesus I couldn’t give two shits about any character in this.
