Flies under the radar as a Tom Hanks joint and gets overshadowed by Catch Me If You Can, which came out in the same year. Yet, this is a legit Top 3-5 21st century Hanks film of the 21st century. Loaded cast. Beautifully directed. Hanks is in the pocket. All the goods are there.

We watched this tonight to take it off the “Kate’s Never Seen It” list. I always really loved this movie. Hanks and Newman are excellent, and Mendes’ approach to the material is pretty terrific. As morality plays go, this one is little simpler than I remember, but handsomely mounted and elegant. A fine sophomore effort from Mendes Kate’s take: “Beautiful movie, loved Jude Law as a villain. 6 out of 7 butts. Paul Newman was still hot. Also, Mike listened to the score a lot long before I saw this movie so I already felt like I’d seen this movie”

What if JOHN WICK (or hey, Lone Wolf and Cub, since that was the original inspiration) was still drop-dead gorgeous but also a morose prestige slog straining for class and seriousness at every opportunity?

“I’m glad it’s you.” I didn’t expect to enjoy this movie. Great cast in the right place. What a great performances . I’d like to thank Thomas Newman for his remarkable work. One of the best soundtracks that I ever heard . Also , The cinematographer Conrad L Hall who fascinated my eyes with his work .

Road to Perdition showcases the worst and best traits of Sam Mendes. A contrived, manipulative and eye-rolling film with some brilliant moments. There are many scenes that brilliantly show the strengths of Sam Mendes and his knowledge of good directing, but there are so many tone-deaf moments for example the bank robbery montage or the garbage voice-over scenes at the beginning and the end (“This is our story” bleh) that just don’t belong in this film. The worst part about this though, Thomas Newman’s score. Incredibly overbearing, misplaced and repetitive. I love Thomas Newman (and his perfect work for American Beauty), but his way of conveying emotions for the story really bothered me throughout. The emotions feel fake and forget…

Tom Hanks-A-Thon: Film #30 ”A man of honor always pays his debts and keeps his word” Sadfellas Tom Hanks goes to work with Sam Mendes to create one of the most somber gangster movies ever. Top 5 Roadside Attractions: #5 It’s probably Tom’s most withdrawn role as he portrays a dead serious workman, even when at home with his family. and yet you see these subtle glimpses of warmth that shine through at all the right moments. #4: Outside of perhaps Gigolo Joe this is one of Jude Law’s creepiest roles ever as he demonstrates exactly why crystal decanters should be banned in all fifty states. #3: Daniel Craig’s once in a lifetime role as a snot-nosed weaselly bastard. His…

The most serene of all mob films, Road to Perdition is a beautifully crafted, finely composed & calmly narrated tale that not only succeeds as an effective crime thriller but also paints a touching portrait of father-son relationship over the course of its runtime and is equally notable for marking the final on-screen appearance of the legendary Paul Newman. Set in the early 1930s during the Great Depression, the story concerns Michael Sullivan Sr., an enforcer for the Irish mobster John Rooney who together share a father-son like relationship. But these bonds of loyalty are soon put to test when Rooney’s son murders Sullivan’s family after Sullivan Jr. ends up witnessing what his father does for a living. Directed by Sam…

A motion picture of unique softness in a genre habitually packed with unyielding brutality, Road to Perdition subverts the gangster mould with its prodigious heart and motifs of retribution and bondage firmly inscribed in the nucleus of the film. The picture glows with intimacy, a focal point in the works of Sam Mendes, whose grip on families confronting desolation is second to none and is the vanguard of the canvas here. All characters apart of the mob know and believe their only true destination is perdition; they’re born, they work, they have a family, they perish. Road to Perdition speaks of a story where one man decides to contravene this unanimous law and break away from the system for the…

Such a sad story. I don’t think anyone but Tom Hanks, with his range, could have played Michael Sullivan this well. Movie life lesson: Maybe hide behind something when you’re being shot at.

Movie moves slow but is done so well. Hanks gives a stand out performance. Newman is great as old time gangster.

The fact that I only realised I have already seen this movie halfway through shows how un-ambitious and unremarkable it is. The first half is better but the second half of the movie is plain boring. Tom Hanks persists in being one of Hollywood’s tackiest actors although his character didn’t give him much opportunity to actually make anything interesting. The other actors’ performances are all very good though. The review on the dvd claimed this was the next best thing after The Godfather, which really is just another great reminder to not trust those.

I can’t help but be a little disappointed with Road to Perdition. With the talent involved, this should really be an under appreciated classic, and whilst there is the odd time where some creativity shines through, I’d say overall this film feels pretty uninspired. If there is one thing that is absolutely deadlifting this entire film, it’s the central theme about fatherhood. The main story is really a bait and switch. You initially think that it’s just another run of…

Not sure how I’m just watching this for the first time in 2026 but here we are. Such an underrated gem of a mobster movie that isn’t spoken about enough. Stacked cast is an understatement. Hanks, Law, Craig and so many others. My biggest takeaway from this movie is that everything comes back to you. Whether you want it or not. A movie about revenge and how it can be an endless cycle of violence and damage to everyone involved. Highly recommend it!

This was an interesting approach to the gangster genre. However, the mellow tone and pacing of the film didn’t really impress me. This aspect of the film is especially disappointing when The Godfather proved that it was possible to make a gangster film with soulfulness without sacrificing the gritty edge that the genre is known for. Additionally, I didn’t like how the two primary antagonists of the film disappear for long stretches of the runtime. That decision killed a lot…

Road to Perdition is a gripping, emotionally grounded crime drama about a hitman and his son forced to flee after the brutal murder of their family. At its core, the film explores the consequences of the life that Michael Sullivan , portrayed with quiet intensity by Tom Hanks , has chosen and how that violence inevitably spills over into the lives of those he loves. As Sullivan and his son (played by Tyler Hoechlin) hit the road, the film transforms…

The ending monologue is trash! Sorry Tyler. Followed the comic pretty well Tom Playing Micheal was definitely miscast however it was as faithful as it needed to be to get a decent rating. It’s so weird watching Tom Hanks play a mob enforcer. A loveable guy and actor best known for goofy comedies, good guys in tragic dramas and his whimsical Spielberg collaborations, is cast completely against type in Sam Mendes’s prohibition crime drama. Mendes gęsto polał sosem. Są elementy słabsze, czasami sceny niepotrzebnie przeciągnięte, ale te kadry, ten deszczowy klimat i ten wybitny soundtrack – to wszystko, czego potrzebuje od kina, by dobrze się bawić. Aha, no i obsada złożona z samych pięknych mężczyzn w przemoczonych garniturach i fedorach też z pewnością pomaga podnieść ocenę…

tyler hoechlin looks like he was cgi’d onto a child’s body and that freaked me out the whole film. the fatherhood bits were lovely, but can’t say much more beyond that. revenge plot with some annoying ass kid in the background ain’t it for me.

When you take that Sam Mendes desaturated world style and add it to a film Noir story it is just like absolute straight drugs into all my feels. My only reason to knock it even a half a star is because I still felt there was some loose threads at the end of the film. It seemed a little shaggy near the end of the movie and I’m not sure if it needed to be shorter or longer. But that is small potatoes as they say. And honestly we need more heel Daniel Craig in our lives.

Instructively bad. Only Daniel Craig innocent. Score possibly the most guilty. Hanks and Law miscast, I cannot find either of them scary. Paul Newman is… here?

I think I’ve had it in my collection for quite a few years, but I’d probably only watched it once; today, I picked it up and decided to watch it again! I had absolutely no memory of it being so extraordinary and nostalgic! As handsomely made as it is tedious despite awesome turns by the supporting cast and a couple bravura pieces – thanks in no small part to last-time dop Conrad Hall (R.I.P.). This is mostly interesting as a post-9/11 call back to the values of small town Americana, with the Depression as a clear stand-in for the present crisis, in the same vein as next year’s Seabiscuit (2003). Compared to that film’s rise-up-and-fight narrative tho, this tackles much darker territory, with…

I absolutely loved this. I knew Road to Perdition was supposed to be good, but I was not expecting it to hit me quite this hard. It is obviously a gangster film, but it never really felt like the gangsters were the most important thing. This is a film about fathers and sons. About what we inherit from people. About whether you can protect somebody you love from becoming like you. About families that love each other and still destroy…

Definitely not my cup of tea but I can see the appeal. Another one to put on my list of “Dad movies that probably really hit if you had a dad.” I like the way this movie looks and sounds, really good on that end. None of the characters really worked for me except Paul Newman. Jude Law was playing a character that I think Michael Shannon would’ve killed as.

Decent prohibition watch… but it’s got problems maybe the problem. I enjoyed it. I had to cross it off the list. I’m not a tom hanks fan and he was kinda doing his usual thing. Craig and Jude law are fine but not amazing. Paul Newman is Paul Newman. The thing is, this film had the potential to notch itself up there with millers crossing, in terms of the best tricky gangland crime sagas (and one of my favorite films). …

Maybe the best title in film. Pacing was a bit slow at points and it’s hard to really cheer for a murderer, but technically it was phenomenal and the story is great. Devistating ending.

“I’m glad it’s you.” Paul Newman, brilliant on screen til the very end. Most of the work I’ve seen him in, at lease recently, was when he was younger, and I was very moved by this elder version of him. Ugh, we’re so lucky he existed. I know it’s been 20+ years, but I’d love to see Tom Hanks take on more roles/films like this. I’ve never not enjoyed a performance of his, but this was refreshing.

The comic book sensibilities placed over this genre is brilliant. This was reminding me of Deep Cover with its gonzo character designs, and the class they both bring to the stylization. I loved the textured, rainy environments and the shot composition is unreal. I also appreciate how it’s a pretty straightforward revenge story that still ends up in a thoughtful place. It’s confident enough not over deconstruct the tropes while having something to say about not letting the next generation…

Art Road to Perdition is very well made. Every level of filmmaking operates at a high level. Directing, cinematography, producting design, acting, editing, music, atmosphere, costume design, sound, visual composition, and everything you can think of makes this movie so good. The craftsmanship is to be adored. The cinematography is masterful. There’s a good collection of darkness, reflections, silhouettes, reflections, fog, rain, shadows, backlighting, negative space, and muted colors. The visuals aren’t just merely pretty as well. They communicate characters…

I’ve always loved this movie. On its’ surface, the casting of Tom Hanks as a 1930s mob hitman may seem risky, but in context it’s inspired and it works. Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, Jude Law, Stanley Tucci, are all wonderful. At the center of the plot, Tyler Hoechlin, playing 12 year old Michael Sullivan Jr., more than holds his own in his first movie (no pressure Tyler). However, what impresses me the most, is that with every rewatch, I am more convinced that it is one of the most beautifully shot films I’ve ever seen.

Wildly hot take: Thomas Newman’s score for this is the wrong one. It’s a good score, but its whimsical sentimentality feels out of place with what is basically a hyper-sensitive noir. Also, Shelby pointed out that the actor who played the son went on to play both Superman and Sephiroth. The boy managed to grow into the angel and devil on our shoulders.
