‎Cinema continues to amaze me. Just when I think I’ve seen everything a film has to offer, a film like this comes along and surprises me with its boldness, its innovation, and the shocks it delivers through purely cinematic means. This film contains many things I’ve never encountered before: images and techniques that feel entirely new, as if someone is stretching cinema’s skin from the inside. Watching it was an experience unlike any other, much like the journey of one hundred years of film history through various films and styles. Each chapter of the film has a different body, a different mood, and a different rhythm than the previous one. Like a rollercoaster, the film keeps moving forward through every…

Cinema as metamodern mythology. A swirling synthesis of film history expressed through style. Bi Gan’s Resurrection takes us through a series of dreams, dreamt by a monster whose insides plays reels of film. It opens with an expressionistic silent film, evocative of early German works, and proceeds to shape shift for each new dream, becoming a film noir, melodrama, and culminating in an impressive single-take sequence that traverses streetlight and rain-drenched alleyways on New Years Eve 1999. Despite not being able to make heads or tails of what was going on in terms of story, I was caught up in the sheer beauty of the film, and it made me feel something, even if that something was just the power…

few filmmakers more spectacularly exult in the fact that cinema is still in its infancy, but if you told me this was the last movie anyone would ever make that would also make perfect sense.

I exist. I must dream. I must love. I must fight. I must hurt. I must see. I must live. I must die. My favorite ending to a story in years, I will be thinking about you until I no longer can.

This is like if Odysseus locked himself in the Criterion Closet with a sheet of acid and started vlogging. Perplexingly presented and exquisitely, lovingly crafted, with images so stunning it’ll be considered gooning by photographers.

80 Felt my brain leaking out of my ears by the end. Saw this with the extended family and all of them fell asleep at different points during the film (complimentary). Transcendent soundtrack by M83. Can be defined as both hardcore cinematic thesis and hypermodern formal object. Stunning stretches of technical craft. That NYE ’99 chapter is marvelous. This is definitely more successful when it isn’t attempting a sense of thematic cohesion and instead just tumbling through its various mysteries and puzzle boxes, but there’s so much to admire here.

RESURRECTION is an awe-inspiring ode to cinematic language that reaffirms Bi Gan’s status as one of the most masterful filmmakers working today. A mesmerizing, out-of-body experience, it features stunning visuals across six chapters, each evoking one of the five human senses. Often confounding but always captivating, whether through its use of expressionism, film noir, a heartwarming father-daughter story, another glorious, technically dazzling oner, or a transcendent final shot that simply took my breath away (Did I happen to mention there’s vampires too?), few films are operating on this level of visionary artistry. It’s the kind of work that inspires a generation to pick up a camera & put their dreams up on the silver screen. Please check out my full review on Next Best Picture here

As a disgusting, sleepy freak who’s spent his life seeking meaning in cinema, I’ve never felt more represented. As formally assured and electric as you’d want from him but more thematically audacious than he’s ever been. Messy, strange and profoundly moving. Loved this.

This movie is like 11x too dense for me to properly wrap my head around right now (mostly because i havent gotten sleep in awhile and this is my first watch) but i think this has the most beautiful visuals ive seen in a movie. Possibly ever. It moved me but im not sure the specific way yet. Also smile butterfly was unexpected and very very appreciated that was fucking awesome Type of movie where once it clicks with me i feel like i will get obsessed with it.

Resurrection’s best trait by far is its phenomenal filmmaking — this thing is genuinely a visual marvel. The consistent exhibition of technical mastery makes this a memorable and enriching experience for me, even when the narrative lulls from oneiric intrigue into outright incomprehensibility… I have enormous respect for the ambition and hugely impressive skill on display here, and several sequences — especially that opening 25 or so minutes — are easily among the greatest of last year; hell, quite possibly of…

Looking back on this movie and remembering every great small scene makes me want to give it a higher rating, it does have a lot of ‘this is cinema’ moments, but those moments are normal at the end of a great movie and when you put so many movies together of course there will be a lot more of them The man playing the weird instrument, the kid reading the letter, the end in the boat… those are all great,…

I don’t have much to add here that hasn’t been said already and more intelligently by others Incredible filmcraft; layers upon layers of history & homage & commentary & renewal converge to make something utterly new David Lynch woulda jizzed his pants over this: We are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives in the dream It took me a while to build up the fortitude to watch this, and while I feel this would absolutely benefit from multiple viewings I’m not…

Like Bi Gan’s earlier Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Resurrection is a visually stunning film, yet emotionally opaque and at times a little bewildering. Still, I appreciate how the film’s segmented approach and larger budget gives Bi more ways to dazzle his audience. In the opening segment, Shu Qi plays a mysterious woman in a silent film, complete with period appropriate aspect ratio, music, dialogue cards, and stop-motion photography. I can’t recall any recent film maintaining this approach for more…

Stunning visually and incredibly interesting premise. There were two or three shots in the film that could be some of my favorites ever. I felt the overarching plot not involved in the vignettes was somewhat underdeveloped. This is probably more fun if you’re a movie buff as each vignette is a tribute to a certain era of movies, but it still gets the job done if you’re not. I’m interested to see other movies by Bi Gan after this
