“nothing ever changes” privatization as an uncanny, aggressive, postmodern chamber thriller. love anderson’s deliberate, kinetic camera moves that imply an invisible danger just around the corner, and the focus on antiseptic production design filled with mutilated, mutated or reanimated bodies being watched by an unaffected corporate presence. full discussion on episode 55 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.

A whole movie of Milla Jovovich being hot🔥 and killing zombies🧟. Of course, I liked it😜. There’s nothing much to it but it’s so campy and fun🔫. The early 2000s vibes are perfect👌. Plus, there’s a zombie dog🐕. Michelle & Milla should’ve kissed, though.😘

83/100 Maybe not the closest video-game film in terms of surface style, but as a narrative, Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil takes on the linearity of a singular character journey and reflects it against a well worn genre mystery. Like a techno-flavored haunted house joyride, this first installment of the Resident Evil franchise is a dazzling template for Anderson’s ambitions; a classical character wandering through multiple genres while constantly inverting and expanding the series’ video game sensibilities. It is not a film that prioritizes typical fan-service pandering, instead taking a well-known name and embellishing core pleasures with a confident sheen. Anderson frames each and every character enclosed within their own environment – like levels, they rapidly change and shrink/expand depending…

tbh I’m usually down for video game schlock but this one struggled to keep my attention, and unfortunately for me I believe these movies only get worse from here. The laser hallway scene obviously rocks though.

Spent this entire moving just waiting for a nu metal song to appear surprise it took until the end credits tbh but they make up for making me wait so long by treating me to both slipknot AND fear factory

Paul W.S. Anderson crafts one of the most effective and stylish video game adaptations of the early 2000s by leaning into industrial sci-fi horror and relentless techno-metal energy. Milla Jovovich instantly cements Alice as an iconic action heroine, waking with amnesia in the subterranean, bio-contaminated Hive complex. Featuring Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson’s pulsing score, memorable mutant horrors like the skinless Licker, and the legendary laser grid hallway sequence, it remains a lean, claustrophobic slice of turn-of-the-millennium popcorn horror.

If there is a more “of its time” movie than this, I haven’t seen it. I’m left feeling I need to return the disc to Blockbuster. It’s frequently cheesy, it bears only a passing resemblance to the source material and the CGI licker didn’t look good at the time, never mind now, 24 years later. And yet…. It’s a fucking fun time and there are some fantastic set pieces, the music RIPS (I’m sorry, I’m all about that unapologetic nu-metal…

Jovovich and Rodriguez rule. I’m playing RE2 for the first time right now and hate lickers with a passion so I felt more triumph than I should have. I cancelled my plans today due to bad brain and this kinda helps.

I’ve grown to enjoy Paul W.S. Anderson‘s hyperactive, MTV-style directing and editing styles. This movie is still boring. The characters and even the zombies are dull as dirt. There’s no plot worth caring about, making for an empty experience. The only thing there is to enjoy about this is Anderson’s editing techniques and uses of colors. Milla Jovovich is worse than Sheri Moon Zombie.

yes it’s trash but it’s my trash, i am exactly where i want to be: umbrella lab, zombies, lickers, and a nu-metal/industrial soundtrack. bonus points for the shortest snippet of nine inch nails playing over alice kicking a cerberus in mid-air.

I previously rated this 2 stars… this time around I really locked in to it and found pretty much nothing to complain about. It’s a bit silly and melodramatic. But that’s because it’s good pulpy fun. Some of the cgi aged badly but the insanity of the action sequences makes up for it to me. And most of the FX work is fine to great! Milla Jovovich is a special effect all on her own. And the cheesecakey aspects of this series are indeed my guilty pleasure. The music is awesome.

Definitely a guilty pleasure! This adaptation of the game is as stupid and shallow as it looks with every line of dialogue designed to explain the plot rather than any character sharing how they might feel. It’s so bad but it is a lot of fun at the same time as it tries to tie itself to the games unlike the later sequels which somehow are even worse. Also the ending is annoying as it doesn’t really end as it…

More like ResiDONT evil am I right?

Really fucking good film. I havent played the games though. So my enjoyment is purely from the sights and sound here which is on point. Even “bad” movies used to look so good. How did we stoop so low

You used to be able just give a hot lady a machine gun while nu metal played and you’d have a successful franchise. Somewhere we lost our way. We need to bring it back.

K
This is such a tight action/horror flick—and arguably Paul W. S. Anderson’s best film. Obviously, parts of it are dated by today’s standards. The Licker has some particularly bad CGI straight out of the 90s Mortal Kombat. But so much more here works than doesn’t. Milla Jovovich a fucking goddess in these movies and this, along with The Fifth Element, cemented her status a resident badass action star. Video game lovers will whine that it’s not enough like the game.…

Alice is actually kind of awesome, She is an absolute diva. I’m glad they added lickers as the evil creatures so everyone could have the chance of being licked, one issue I see though is the place didn’t explode… kinda embarrassing… really think it should’ve exploded!!!!

Aside from some boring ‘shake the camera while people shoot guns off screen’ action scenes i was surprised how well this held up. looks great, cool sets, some great practical sfx combined with dogshit cgi in a way that was more charming than distracting. Rodriguez should have been the franchise lead and i’ll die on that hill.

I have never played a single Resident Evil game, and really only know a handful of random character names because of gaming cultural osmosis. So despite the WS Anderson series apparently being in-name only adaptations, I never had that incentive to watch a series based on a franchise I have no investment in. But I’m a Cregghead (can we call Cregger fans Creggheads? Let’s call them Creggheads), and I suppose it’d be neat to have movies I can compare the…

Like a lot of movies in its genre, this is a story of actors trapped in a video game, BUT I’m still giving this high marks because of the technical precision that fills almost every frame. Up until it starts to wobble a bit in the 3rd act, every second of every shot has a forward, propulsive motion. This reads like a movie that was 3x the length but then expertly and thoughtfully pared down to its most essential minutes.…

We’re just mere weeks away from a brand new Resident Evil movie, and if you’ve followed me for at least the last year now, you very well know Resident Evil has pretty much become a part of my identity.

I’m a big fan of the Resident evil games, and this movie franchise isn’t a great adaptation of the games. But I can’t lie this movie franchise is a guilty pleasure.

Extremely stupid. Kinda rocks at times. It doesn’t capture the horror vibe I love from the Resident Evil games, but it has enough of the trademarks (zombies, Umbrella Corporation, T-virus, etc.) and survival horror aspects that it’s an easy watch. I liked the mystery and setup in the beginning, even though it unfortunately doesn’t go anywhere surprising or interesting. The laser hallway sequence was really fun. The script is awful in a way that I kinda give a pass to,…

The practical zombie stuff is well done. They ask too much of the actors they hired. There is not single actor in this movie that can pull off all the introspection they required. If there was gore. This would be a much better received movie.

Funny story— I’ve spent the last 12 years or so thinking I’d seen this movie, but I’ve been confusing the Resident Evil franchise with the Underworld franchise this whole time. I don’t know shit about Resident Evil! I watched an embarrassingly large portion of this expecting vampires to show up. Don’t I have egg on my face… The movie itself is fine. Distinctly early-2000s. Enjoyable in a dumb action/sci-fi schlock way. I liked the bit where Milla Jovovich aerial kicked…

Look, this film is not a good adaptation of the video games at all. The purists are probably already mad at me for giving this thing as high of a rating as I am now, but I have to be honest: as a big dumb B grade action movie, I was very entertained from start to finish. vamos maratonar Resident Evil comigo?

a really fun action/horror movie. it’s light on gore, but i really like how the zombies were portrayed and the monster horror we get is tasty. there’s enough human drama and intrigue to keep things fresh and tense, though i wasn’t really attached to any of them (but in a movie like this, that’s not really the point). also the soundtrack is nothing but bangers, this is some top-shelf buttrock and synths.
-
I
Michelle Rodriguez as Rain steals the show in this. She is ICONIC in this and an honorary resident evil game character. I really like how this first one really does its own thing while being sorta accurate to the games on the lore of umbrella.

Given that this movie came out in 2002, well before the RE games drifted a little towards action-horror, it’s surprising they took that route with this. It completely disregards the initial suspense and mystery of the games by providing exposition that immediately dispels this to service mediocre action. It’s like a movie if someone was told about the game but had no idea what the tone was or what it looked like

The definition of a guilty pleasure franchise starts right here. I have such a love for these films I can’t even explain it…except for the last one. I love the early 2000’s score because it brings back so much nostalgia for me! I love reading that Michelle Rodriguez wanted to be on an Resident Evil adaptation as soon as it became available. Honestly, pretty good for a 2002 action. I’m just getting into the game and movie series, so far so good. Like yeah, it’s very 2000s, the cheesy catchphrases would usually make me gringe, but cmon, that’s what the movies were back then. Also the camera shots and the soundtrack – very nostalgic. I’m kinda shocked that the rating is 2.9/5!

Could have been better. The original characters were not entirely bad, but the film does so little with them aside from having everyone only be there to ask questions about what’s going on. The film also could have used some gore considering what the source material is like, and how this is technically a horror movie. Alice killing zombies with an axe while wearing a dress was really cool though

Solid enough horror action. The movie has its moments where it expects you to point at the screen and go, “I know that one!” but overall it feels like its own self-contained story. I was shocked by how much the structure of the plot felt like a Resident Evil game rather than the actual events within it. Also, the laser hallway is sick.

I don’t think I ever saw this all the way through but always chunks on tv. Languid? I liked the opening hive stuff of the outbreak in the lab and that killing off the staff. Really looking forward to revisiting this series with Blank Check. My biggest complaint continues to be the environment variety. There’s no recognizable geography in this movie so it ends up feeling distant and strange but not in a fun unsettling way, just disatisfying.
