Respect the attempt to try and bring back the Silent Hill (2006) era of horror videogame adaptation (all confusing lore mystery, creepy atmosphere, gnarly violence, and wonky CG) and this Roberts guy knows how to compose a widescreen frame (nice slow zooms and split diopters as well) but man the modern franchise filmmaking writing and CW actors do their best to derail anything nice you might be thinking about this for a few seconds. The kind of movie where a character goes “Hi Leon Kennedy I’m Jill Valentine.” and the other one goes “Hi Jill Valentine, I’m Leon Kennedy.” Even has a Marvel post-credits scene lol.

1 whole star for Chrisker truth It then lost that star when Lisa Trevor started fighting a licker. I truly didn’t believe people when they said how bad this was, I’m genuinely blown away. The only thing I can commend this for is its sets, particularly the main entrance halls of the Spencer Mansion and the RPD. The film itself tries to cram in so much fanservice that it turns itself into poorly written fanfiction. Why is the mansion incident happening at the same time as the Raccoon City incident? Why have they turned cold calculating Wesker into a frat bro? Why are him and Birkin strangers? Where’s Mr X? Why is Lisa Trevor in Raccoon city? Why did they…

35 Not as bad as I feared, but this struggles to get past the hurdle of attempting to adapt Resident Evil 1 *and* 2. Too much character set-up and structural ambition for a low-budget Screen Gems production that deserved to be a 75 minute romp through the Spencer mansion. Johannes Roberts, of The Strangers: Prey at Night fame, brings along his trademark slow zooms, John Carpenter styling, and pop ballads to a messy hodgepodge of references and cameos. There’s a few decent moments here, and a desperate zombie attack entirely lit by gunfire and a lighter is the clear formal standout. If the PWSA series gleefully disregarded so much of the series mythology, Welcome to Raccoon City functions like a checklist for the fans.

Lol, this thing fucking loooooooves letting you know that it’s set in 1998. They wink at the camera so fucking hard by verbally or visually shoving 90s things down your throat like: Blockbuster, chatrooms, Planet Hollywood, a character playing snake on an absolute fucking brick of a cellphone while “What’s Up” by 4 Non Blondes plays in the background, a character listening to a walkman that’s blaring the song “Crush” by Jennifer Paige (great moment tho), music from The Cardigans, a top-loader VHS player, a VHS tape that when played contains some intense tracking, a pager, a palm pilot and definitely some more 90s shit that I can’t really recall right now. Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City is a…

I’ve got to hand to Director Johannes Roberts; he tried his best to make it look like John Carpenter helmed a RESIDENT EVIL movie: It’s filmed mostly in long shots, with a lot of style, and an emphasis on spooky set-pieces over action scenes. The goofy-ass trailers are VERY misleading. The film is undone from trying to stuff two video games worth of plots into one running time – which makes it feel like a fan edit. We get Raccoon City being overrun with zombies as well as a bunch of police officers inspecting a big abandoned manor. Both sections run concurrently, which leads to an intriguing set-up, but unsatisfying outcome because no character makes an impression, and the set-pieces…

Resident Evil has officially seen its live action franchise rebooted this week, and holy fvcking shit was it a great time. Odds have been stacked against Welcome to Raccoon City since its conception, and with my small knowledge of the games, I think it looks pretty faithful. Much greater atmosphere and scares than the previous set of action movies, and a better cast, too. Robbie Amell gave me everything I needed as a Chris Redfield main, and Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hopper, and others round out the cast well. Avan Jogia’s Leon Kennedy is going to be divisive as hell, but every scene that he was in felt elevated, and there’s no denying he fits that role perfectly. This is…

Despicable in almost every way. It’s a shame because you can tell the actors are trying their best.

Equivalent to watching a YouTube gameplay walkthrough… but it’s only the cutscenes.

Claire looking at Leon for being consistently pathetic was my mood with this movie as a whole. I do believe in Claire Redfield supremacy though.
