Among Netflix’s many crimes against artistry (the algorithmic dumping ground they greet their acquisitions with, back in the news: not paying their creatives fairly, etc.), one of the more underrated is their absorption of the trashy, stylish genre programmer. Back in the day, a comically bleak piece of Southern Gothic exploitation like The Devil All the Time or espionage paperback material like The Gray Man would’ve been prime red meat for our sturdiest, practical mid-budget craftsmen to stylistically experiment with and develop their auteurist credentials beyond the music videos and advertisements they were likely discovered through. Under Netflix, films like these now fit into pre-determined algorithmic slots and are given a generic, prestige television autopilot slickness that mutes any potential…

Ok, I do understand the criticisms I’m seeing, (to an extent anyway, but everyone is entitled to their opinions) but I’d be absolutely lying if I said I didn’t end up really loving this for what it was, and I personally think it’s a pretty impressive directorial debut. Solid acting, fantastic music and I thought the last 20 minutes were superb. I like detective/murder mysteries…sue me! | 2023 Ranked | My Last Review: | The Thing |

I fucked with this hard. gorgeous cinematography and a story that keeps you intrigued for quite long. I can say the pacing is noticeable though. would’ve ate this up even more if I saw it in theatres.

Feels like someone fed Prisoners into an A.I. and told it to make them a movie like that, and out popped Reptile. If you had put this in front of me without the opening or closing credits and asked me who made it, I would have taken one look at the A-list cast, the bloated runtime, and the fact that it’s so sluggishly paced that it seems to be begging you to watch it at 1.25x speed, and said “Netflix.”

Okay killer mystery flick. Some details were unnecessary and dragged the length of the film

somehow held my attention really well on the 2nd watch but yet i could only recall the gestures of what happened actually a pretty good script and some clever cinematic framing if not over complicated by too many characters tho it scratches the LA Confidential itch in ways Alicia Silverstone totally babe and very believable cop wife funny that we have proof how JT acts around cops and this performance is about right

In short, it’s unwatchable. So much style, so much random crap: all to produce a tedious film.

despite it looking gorgeous, it was a bit confusing and the slow burn was too slow in terms of the pacing. idk why i always find benicio del toro’s acting so comforting.

rushed ending but very good movie

IMO this one is under rated. Del Toro and Timberlake are awesome. A well done who done it. Plot, dialogue, acting all great.

Grant Singer needs to be directing again soon ! I’m obsessed with the way this was shot, the small but effective creative choices, for example using mirrors in the frame to show a character or the music stopping paralleling a door shutting Which I think is what subconsciously makes you engaged and compelled to keep watching A masterclass in pacing, writing, suspense I’m not sure how cited a ‘unicorn’ character is but they are essentially a rare type of person…

good movie but what the fuck does this have to do with reptiles aside from the snake skin ? although could be just a metaphor I’m kind of too dense to pick up. probably. still good 4 star

I love Benicio Del Toro. Everything he’s in he’s a badass and I love it. Great ensemble cast as well. This felt like Chinatown. A great noir film and I was on the edge of my seat every minute. It did feel slow in the beginning but then, it started to find its footing. It was predictable though. Also, Justin Timberlake plays a great villain. Maybe plays one too well… When he threatened the guy to stay away from his wife was hilarious.

The average review on letterboxd rates this movie around a 3 and that is very disappointing. Lock in, people. This is a movie about a man dealing with inconclusive evidence, vanishing leads, and red herrings. And he is somehow miraculously able to catch just enough to get it right. He’s not a perfect main character. He’s not Batman or Sherlock Holmes. He doesn’t have superhuman judgement or aim. That’s not the point. He’s a regular guy whose paranoia kept him…

I like Benicio Del Toro’s performance. The movie itself was aight. Not a whole lot else to say. I’m already in general not a huge fan of detective special ops type stuff, so it’s not a huge surprise that I’m pretty indifferent on this. I appreciate the Scooby Doo villain evil real estate plot tho.
-
C
-
S
A really solid thriller: great cast, tense, high thrillfactor. Benicio del Toro seriously needs to be given more leading roles! This is a 2023 movie that somehow feels like it was made in the mid-’90s, and that’s exactly what makes it so good.
-

I would have given this a 5 if JT wasn’t the lead actor, but then again he has excellent personal experience as an abusive, scumbag boyfriend so perhaps the casting was on point for this

A fine murder mystery movie that wasn’t a total waste of my time, but borderline almost was. Del Toro crushes as the lead, but other than that, the plot was too drawn out, slow at times, and took too many twists and turns for the worse.
-
P
i thought the ending made the movie, but like most of it felt kind of murky and i wish the plot twist was a littleee more hinted at because when it’s set up like that you end up knowing that everything they think is wrong. but that’s not an actual issue i had it was just a long ass movie

By no means the most incredible crime thriller out there but my god do I love Benicio Del Toro and basically anything he does, he’s honestly the best part, I love him in this and I think that like I said it’s not the best in the world but it’s good, it’s tense, it’s intriguing, it’s nerve wracking, it’s a fun puzzle to piece together. Not to mention the cinematography, I mean the shot selection, editing and the camera movement…

too long, there’s some scenes who are — in MY opinion — useless, the main character, i’m sorry, has less charisma than me, but it’s a competent crime thriller so not bad, just not interesting enough to be a movie i’d recomend or even watch a second time also i wish i could have seen more justin
-
B
well that was quite good and confusing at first. i was prayinggggg for a good ending the cast is interesting 😉
-
A
It is kinda slow at first, but it gets more interesting as the story unfolds. The mystery, atmosphere, and twists kept me engaged, even if the pacing was a little slow at times. Overall, a solid crime thriller.

This movie had me ready to give it a five stars review until the ending came so abruptly and confusing im gonna have to watch a review or maybe again to understand the ending but I wnjoyed every single part of this movie it honestly was a 5 star but the way it just abruptly ended was amazing. I love how in some movies you can clearly tell that it was filmed in Georgia, even when no landmarks are shown. A grungy crime thriller that works well in terms of it’s writing, but not so much emotionally. I liked all of the performances here, Benicio del Toro is a stand out as expected, but I didn’t form any emotional connection to anyone in the film making it hard to fully buy into the story. The film is shot nicely though, I especially liked the way they shoot the interiors of the empty sale houses. That one dream sequence inside one near the end was excellent. And it comes with a nice, unexpected plot twist in the conspiracy, so yeah good movie, an impressive directoral debut

This was an incredibly involved, layered and nuanced story. Almost all of the characters except for the lead detective and his wife lived shady and criminal lives, while posing as upright members of society. The conspiracy is well layered and imbedded. The detective and his wife have the most healthy, loving and supportive relationship I have ever seen depicted in a cop story. It was refreshing. And honestly it’s so loving of a relationship it makes you wish more relationships…

Slightly better than the reviews I think. Not breaking any ground — kind of a second-rate COPLAND mixed with the grim, drab palette murder procedurals of the last 20 years (GONE GIRL, PRISONERS, etc etc). Director is a music video guy with no other feature credits, but he does a competent job with the tense atmospherics and small-town-hides-a-dark-secret trope. I’d watch Benicio Del Toro in this kind of movie 10/10 times, and it was nice to see Alicia Silverstone. Eric…

Phenomenal camera work, the cinematography is so good, the sound design is even better, shit that gets you on the edge of your seat, plot isn’t retarded, it puts everything in front of you to figure out yourself, so many misleading clues mixed in with the truth, it’s so nutty, it doesn’t treat you like a dumbass it makes it hard for you to piece it together, man this nigga Eli gotta be my favorite character, such a great movie…

This was epic. Had me hooked from the start. Benicio del Toro and Alicia Silverstone are standout. I didn’t see all the twists and turns coming. Beautifully shot too.
-
T
Benicio del Toro fucking goated as always and makes Justin Timberlake look like hot ass next to him The cinematography + sound combination had me lowkey tweaking at the intense parts Perfect needle drop ending
-
F
So suspenseful, good plot building without a lot of dialogue. Great cinematography. Just my kind of movie. I’m seeing a lot of negative reviews about the pacing of the movie… I think people are so needy for some kind of quick fix and forget how beautifully the movie is shot, how much you connect with the characters, and see into his life. I loved it and I loved the slow pace. I think a faster pace would have bored me and made for a shit movie.
-
X
It was a good movie, if you took out timberlake and added a random actor his role would still have the same impact. Didn’t expect the twist near the end though
-
V
This was GOOD idgaf what these other reviews are talking about!!! Benicio is incredible

1
Great cinematography, great atmosphere, and an unexpectedly amazing soundtrack that just goes BANG out of nowhere during the quietest scenes. Benicio del Toro was great too. The slow-burn mystery kept me engaged most of the time, but the pace dragged a bit and got me bored here and there.
-
B
A solid crime mystery, but it never really excited me. The atmosphere was good, but for a 2-hour-and-16-minute murder investigation, I expected more tension. Not bad, just not as gripping as I hoped.”
-
C
Literally not a single reptile in this movie…. Just bunch of snakes
-
M
I quite enjoyed the pacing. 40 mins in, I asked myself what made benicio del toro pick up this script is also the exact moment the plot changes direction, quite enjoyed that gradual turn.
1 -
W
Reptile had me hooked. Completely. From the beginning, I wanted to know what happened, who did what, who was lying, who could actually be trusted and I spent most of the movie questioning absolutely everyone. It had that perfect psychological-thriller tension where you feel like the answer is sitting right in front of you, but you still can’t quite grab it. Casting Justin Timberlake was certainly… a choice, considering how much I cannot stand that man, but thankfully he wasn’t…

This was a really solid and entertaining detective movie – really dripping with the noir angst that I want from the genre without feeling too much like a cartoonish genre piece, like it still felt real and like something that could happen in the real world and all the characters felt like real people more or less. I mean Timberlake maybe doesn’t feel like a completely real person but he plays a very good, convincing, soulless character à la Affleck…
-
T
While the ending of this film may seem cliché and even something you should’ve expected, Benicio Del Toro put on arguably one of the best acting performances I have ever seen in a detective/murder mystery movie. His performance as well as the chilling twist near the end of the movie strongly carry the rating of this movie.

Watched this movie like 2 years ago and hated it so much I gave it one star but didn’t write an entry so this is my best guess. Filmography was very nice, loved the color grading. Ok that was the only good thing about this movie. Maybe cast too. Storyline HORRIBLE nothing made sense I didn’t care about anyone I also couldn’t tell the difference between any of the 50 million old men in this movie. Have no idea what…
