God, you really hate to see a little monkey do a Nazi salute. I know I’ve seen all of these movies, but it’s been so long this felt like the first time. Unbelievable blocking here. Often imitated, never really replicated– the scene where a guy gets shot and we see it in their shadow? Stroke of genius. So obvious to see all the influence this has had on a generation of action-comedy blockbusters but no one’s really aped it down to the specifics enough to feel like they’re being as clever as this franchise is. I mean, the reveal of how the Nazis got the medallion details alone!

Looking back on this in today’s pop movie landscape is so fascinating because it occupies a strange middle ground between silly, gleeful, highly specified throwback to pulpy B-movies and serials of Spielberg/Lucas youth and the technical, machinelike template for what the broadest, most expensive blockbusters would look like for the next nearly 40 years and counting. I understand the perspective of those that find it commercial or impersonal as a result but on the other hand, can you imagine a world where this was the level that this kind of moviemaking was at all the time…? You know, having actual characters performed with such personality (Allen and Freeman especially) and filled with wit, charm, and passion for the idiosyncratic cinematic/genre…

The start of the best treasure hunting saga. The movie really shows it’s age. The female lead is really painful.

Watching Raiders of the Lost Ark for the first time was pure joy, modern adventure films can’t compete. Also, the monkey’s demise was highly satisfying.😏

Fucking classic, they don’t make movies like this anymore where they find the absolute fucking perfect guy to play their role and don’t let anyone else play that role or ever be the face of that role. Fucking peak cinema, only reason it’s not a five is because of some of the acting isn’t great i feel from a lot of people not named harrison ford.

Too political

One of these movies i’ve always hesitated to watch, afraid of being disappointed. Now, understand why it’s considered a cult and why of my doubts. Has an undeniable visually greatness but, for my taste, plenty of defects: every character, Indiana in primis, have a completely lack of psychological introspection, i really can’t get into them. Manniqueism rules everywhere, good looking people are nice, strong, funny and heroic, mean people are unattractive, fool, cowards.

Spielberg’s best movie except for Amistad and maybe E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. A beautifully made, fun, crazy masterpiece with some of John Williams’ best music and probably Harrison Ford’s best performance. Far better than the others in the series, though I am fond of Temple of Doom. If you were disappointed in the overhyped Last Crusade, and figured the movies are just not for you, don’t let that keep you from seeing Raiders. Watch for theater showings. I have been to it twice in the past two years.

One of the most pure adventure movies out there, one of the most likable (and incompetent) action heroes of all time, and a healthy does of interesting (if dubiously sourced) religious mysticism. Also, definitely cannot believe I watched this as kid, it’s quite gory, and the final scene is fairly scary for the young ones

It’s been years since I’ve seen this, but it’s still filled with so much charm. I’m still not crazy about adventure/action films in general, but it’s Indiana Jones. Also, Marion will forever be the greatest. It truly lives up to the spirit of adventure and the passion of it. It plays on its tropes but it does them so so we’ll.
-
J
Maybe one of the reasons I’m very interested with history and the late antiquity. Plus, I had a very big fat crush with Harrison wearing those glasses at the university. This film really makes it big with the adventure, grandeur, and liveliness as shown in its sets, especially in Cairo and Tanis. That tabernacle scene is amazing like… really

I find this movie to be highly unrealistic. There’s a scene in which a fly crawls across the French man’s face. If he really WAS a frog, he would’ve caught and swallowed the fly… ☹️

Watched it with the kids. The melting faces at the end were much less terrifying than i remembered.

Call it nostalgia bias, but this is a 5, I’m sorry. Having had the chance to watch this in theaters for it’s 4th anniversary, my 8 year old self, who dressed up as Indy for Halloween, whip, fedora, and all, is smiling ear to ear in enjoyment
-
T
Finished watching it at home after yesterday’s abruptly interrupted viewing. It’s a rather entertaining adventure movie filled with amazing music and sets! It’s a fun story that’s a bit all over the place and essentially feels like a big comic movie. It’s shot well, there’s a ton of neat effects and the cast is pretty great too. The acting is good for the most part. There’s some pretty bad extras in there and honestly Karen Allen wasn’t all that great…

L
This movie does so much in the short 110 minute runtime it commands. Losing attention at any moment could affect the payoff of a moment later in the film. Will certainly fill out the trilogy first, but I think a return to this as an individual movie could offer an even more expansive understanding of the world building that Lucas and Spielberg paint. Williams score was epic, but I could not get the similarity to Han and Leias theme out…

My wife (who it should be noted is a one of a kind snake hater) asked me if there are any snakes in this movie. I didn’t quite know how to answer that. I give it 7 stars. She gives it 3 (only because of the snakes, she assures me). So we’ll compromise at 5. That’s what marriage is all about.

If there’s one Spielberg damn well knows, it’s how to make good effects, practical or CGI. But mostly practical, the effects here aged like fine fucking wine, and they get better everytime I see this perfect movie, the entire trilogy as an whole is perfect, the other two I somehow don’t actually mind, but this one is by far the best one out of all 5 of the movies in this franchise.

I’m going off the cuff on this one because there’s nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said a million times about this movie or Harrison Ford BUT This movie is honestly the reason I got into movies in the first place. Gotta be honest in that I remember this being a lot better. Maybe I’m more nostalgic for the Lego game LOL Anyways, I actually do see a lot of similarities with this and Disclosure Day (since that’s fresh in the mind) and how different both films are from a lot of Spielberg’s more dramatic pieces (a la Schindler’s List, Munich, Lincoln, Saving Private Ryan, etc). I do still think Disclosure Day suffers from being much more absurd than this, though. Also, those Special FX at the end were pretty sick.

The boy gives it 5/5 his favorite part is the well of souls. He pitched at the end having the melting skull fly into the screen. Jones might be the coolest character ever created. Lucas really had the juice. I gotta see the museum.

A few thoughts: Need to get men to wear three piece suits again. Harrison Ford wearing his professor get up w/ glasses is particularly awesome.

long ass movie (weird ass movie too). “we have to celebrate our differences” song in a movie jdhdhsjsjsbsj. also, the things women have to endure because of men’s pride. i know, i know, how dare i talk about women in a movie about this iconic guy? i don’t know, but the entire movie was her getting dragged in dangerous situations “por la cara”. but i liked the part were nazis died in terrible pain. that was nice. no doubt these…

Steven, George, I love you guys. Thank you. Also thank you to my 6th grade history teacher for telling us to watch this as an “assignment.” The fight around the plane leading directly into the truck chase is the best movies have ever been. Well, this is THE adventure film. I can see the influence it had on action-adventure and treasure hunt films, and for good reason, the film is good. We follow the character Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, on a journey in search of the Ark of the Covenant, in a race against the Nazis. I feel that the fact that this film is so beloved is largely due to the character of Indiana Jones, an intelligent and capable hero, but…

Meh. Nothing in this movie is important and it’s poorly written. Why does the villain say “I’m a shadowy reflection of you” to Indiana Jones? I hate when plot lines are explicitly stated, does Steven Spielberg think his audience is stupid???!? Also the orientalist tropes are completely overdone and offensive.

IN THEATERS Just when I thought that this movie couldn’t get any better, the BOOM of the cinema speakers and the crystal clear 4k projection proved me wrong. This is without a doubt one of the most masterful films of all time. A film about the power of respect for the “old ideals.” We learn, like Indy, that all this morally grey posturing that allowed normal people to tolerate the Nazis is an evil in and of itself. God hates…

Who knew this would be the start of such an iconic franchise when this was released? I consider this film the perfect action/adventure film, I love the historical aspect of these films and this one in particular and then the action is brilliant, particularly the truck chase sequence. The score is iconic and one of the best ever, I will defend this franchise and this character to my dying breath.

Bu film isə digərlərindən fərqli olaraq qəribə şəkildə insanı izlətdirir. Bəlkə də action hissələrinə əlavə olaraq gərginliyin…

S
As Amy said : “It was very entertaining despite the glaring story problem. Indiana jones plays no role in the outcome of the story. If he weren’t in the film, it would turn out exactly the same. If he weren’t in the movie, the Nazis would have still found the Ark, taken it to the island, opened it up and all died, just like they did.” 😂😂
-

And we are here. Back when I was very very young. Probably one of the first movies I ever watch. Childhood, nostalgia and so good cinema. My goal is to recreate that scene on the ship 😏
-
K
This movie I think is held up so much by its nostalgia level. I think it’s got one of if not the best sound tracks ever I and I understand well that for the day and age this came out this whole movie is groundbreaking. So if I was going off of 70’s to 80’s film it’s a 4.5 stars. But it’s not the 80’s anymore. There’s simply just better acting shots and directing in this day and age. So it’s a 3.5 – 4

Fun adventure movie! For some reason felt vaguely bond-esque but with mystic tomb raiding instead of secret agent stuff. So many iconic scenes and moments came from this one film that i basically knew the entire plot without ever having watched it. This movie gets away with a LOT for a PG-13 rating. A ton of blood, corpses, liquor, several hard swears, the whole list. Don’t even get me started on the climax scene, that’s some shit you wouldn’t even…

A juxtaposition of serious action, extreme ridiculousness and pure style. They don’t make movies like this anymore. Nazi monkey is crazy. Please don’t let Indiana do any more archaeology, though.

I like the series and grew up on it. It was one of my families beloved and they first saw it bootlegged in then Czechoslovakia. More than half of this must be action scenes – always my least favorite. Though exotic and romanticized what I like is there was no disrespect to other cultures or ethnocentrism, nor do any derogatory terms get used.

it’s probably because i have zero nostalgia towards this movie but this didn’t really do it for me. i don’t hate it, and i acknowledge how iconic it is. i’m just not a huge action movie fan. plus the only female character in the whole movie having absolutely zero substance kinda irked me

It’s been probably 8 years since I’ve last seen this movie, so while I remembered the key plot points, nearly everything in between was effectively new to me, which led to a pretty enjoyable viewing experience. I think the obvious highlights of the movie are both the soundtrack, which is incredibly iconic, and Harrison Ford’s performance as Indiana Jones, but I also found the way the plot was structured, while a bit formulaic, to be pretty fun to watch unfold.…
-
B
This movie so great, I think I watched this movie 67 times… maybe more, also on repeat was when the ark gets open, love when the people head blows up and melts off…. 🙏

The movie holds up better than I expected. Having watched it as a child, it was definitely one of those with lots of nostalgia that I was worried would not be met; thankfully, this was not the case. More campy than I remembered, and the writing was not as refined as I expected.

“I’m making this up as I go!” Even with an idol like John Ford, Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones series is anchored in what feels almost like a Spaghetti Western. It’s a repudiation of the suave and seamless hero he grew up watching in old movie serials. No James Bond is Indy, but that almost makes him more relatable. Even in his professional pursuits, he isn’t perfect. In fact, I think if you were to ask an archaeologist about his ethical…

Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest living directors and no one can convince me otherwise. In this constant nagging debate about whatever new shiny director is supposed to take the throne of the new best director, I’ve never really been convinced by the recent frontrunners. This film is a perfect example of why, because on paper this should be some trivial campy adventure film, which it is obviously inspired by. But every scene, every shot, every edit, every scene…
1 -
R
Sometimes we come back to movies years later that we were convinced were our favorites and realize that they’re not as great as we thought they were. And that’s okay – bc even if the characters could’ve been more well-developed, every shot here fucking rocks and every Nazi dies in the most spectacular fashion imaginable. And to me, that’s cinema. Spielberg Ranked
