A superb drama. One of Nic’s finest pieces of dramatic acting, so understated and subtle, very masterful and deep. I really like that a film that deals with such heavy subject matter has a lighter side as well, nothing is heavy handed or over done, it all just feels so natural and real. A rewarding film to watch, small but meaningful.

Recommended to me on my Lend me your Heart list (which can be found here) This is one of those films that adds an extra dimension if you have children. It is a bleak film, with a tiny sparkle of hope, about grief, relationships and family and while it didn’t completely satisfy on an artistic level, on an emotional level it affected me deeply. Slowly but surely in the story we learn about the tragic accident that killed Kidman’s and Eckart’s son. We get to know all involved and how the couple deal with this tragic loss. Central in this narrative is the relationship of the parents, the strain it is under and the way it effects people around them.…

Nicole Kidman is a national treasure and this tore my heart to shreds and that’s all I have to say 2010 Ranked

Beat-for-beat the indie drama about navigating grief on different schedules you’d think it is reading the logline but it’s very well-acted and made for what it is, and I appreciate the lowkey register of awkward tenderness and humor it opts for instead of nonstop misery. It’s funny to think that this type of film now would probably have a spooky metaphor ghost in it to make money.

A powerful portrait of how long lasting and consuming is grieving, the way it changes the way we see life, love, trust and family bonds. Beautiful and difficult at the same time, it really works its way around the way the characters feel broken and disoriented without overexplaining themselves, not a bunch of big fights and shoutings or a showboat of feeling, but a quiet and detailed compilation of gestures and moments that touch you deeply.

O
A thoughtful and deeply human psychological drama about grief and the aftermath of trauma. Nicole Kidman is excellent here, giving such a layered and emotionally restrained performance. Aaron Eckhart is also great, and I really liked their dynamic. What I especially liked was the film’s approach to grief. Rather than focusing on the trauma itself, it spends more time exploring what comes after and how people try to deal with it. It’s quiet, emotional, and psychologically interesting, and I really liked what it was trying to do.

La escena de la discusión del matrimonio se me hacía rara viendo cómo la cara de Nicole Kidman no podía mover ni un músculo. Es que ni cuando intentaba al menos fruncir el ceño…

One of the most powerful films about grief I’ve ever seen. I certainly don’t relate to the specific experiences of these characters, but I felt such an honest and authentic connection with someone whose misery and grief manifests as revolting disgust and anger toward everyone else around them. One of Nicole Kidman’s finest performances in how understated it is until she needs to show all the emotions hitting her at once.

I didn’t hate this movie at all!! All preformances were so raw and I loved it, esp Miles Teller & Nicole Kidman’s preformance. Nicole did grief LOVELY here, and you could tell that Jason really regretted and blamed himself due to Miles. I like this movie ok

Ótimo retrato sobre luto e como ele é distinto para as pessoas. Achei interessante a troca de papéis, onde o marido aparece como alguém mais emotivo e a esposa como a mais racional. Excelente atuação da Nicole.

For a second I was wondering “why did I love this so much as a 13 year old” but then Nicole Kidman slapped a woman in a grocery store

It’s genuinely shocking to me how this film wasn’t even a part of nominees for best picture at the 83rd academy awards, because I would have EASILY replaced this film with one of the weaker entries. In all honesty, this is what Biutiful tried and unfortunately was unsuccessful at doing. It’s a genuinely somber and utterly depressing film to watch, but it balances it out by having a very grounded sense of realism where you can see the acting, dialogue,…

Vraiment très touchant, tu ne verras probablement jamais un film aussi triste. Au final le père est celui qui souffre le plus mais aussi celui qui fait le plus de mauvais choix. Et la mère me fait chà tout rejeter sur les autres.

oh my god I cried my eyes out at this movie it’s heartbreaking. Miles is so silly in this but also conveys the guilt and regret he feels super well. Honestly this whole movie is really good at representing grief. I would put it higher but the other ones I like just a little more. If it had more miles in it would be ranked higher

sometimes letting go is not about time that will heal, but it’s about how to face them while you don’t have to lose yourself.

Grief is so personal and subtle, and so I really appreciate this films ability to portray that perfectly

Kidman CHEWS the scenery, one of her best performances alongside The Hours, To die for and Birth, the entire cast does great job but Kidman really sticks it all together, otherwise a fairly basic but engaging enough melodrama, it’s simple and short so not too much to be mad about

For a film that has a child’s death as it’s subject it wasn’t maudlin at all. The best bit was in the group session with the ‘God’ couple crying and the woman saying, “God wanted an angel”. Nicole’s characters just said, “Well, why didn’t he just make one. He’s God isn’t he?”. You never really know why she’s following that boy, it just slowly unravels. Her mother says I lost a child I know how you feel, her daughter replies saying that she lost a 30 year old heroine addict why she lost a 4 year old boy in an accident.
