Few times can modern celluloid remind us of the purest form of filmmaking, that of excellent performances, a smashing editing reflecting a historical catastrophe, razor-sharp dialogue, shocking revelations, and that indestructible impotence felt against injustice, with a terrific musical score, historical accuracy, a grand cinematography, a proper, pace, a correct length, all with the beautiful art dramatization pulled off just right. It is very difficult to find cases in which the most “basic” aspects of the Seventh Art find a balanced harmony, where each constituent works in favor of the entire product. That is Chéreau’s dramatic adaptation about the arranged marriage between Margot de Valois, sister of the idiot Catholic King Charles IX, and the Protestant King Henri of Navarre,…

Wickedly intoxicating. Historical cinema in its most primal form. Don’t let the old school poster art fool you, this is a no-holds-barred tornado of sex, death and deception…and that cinematography…Wowza! Only the French could make something like this, haha.

The film is highly dramatized, and quite a lot of the plot is historically inaccurate, but the costumes, and overall production design are really well done. Honestly, I don’t think Isabelle Adjani gave a particularly strong performance here. The emotional transition of how Margot goes from the Catholic side to the Protestant camp isn’t developed or set up convincingly enough. That said, the film did give me a lot of material for imagining and learning about the French royal court and its history in the 16th century.

Watched the Director’s cut Liked it more this time around. There is still an issue as the saint Bartholomews massacre happens early on and after that nothing feels as important as that event. The guilt is still there but as things mostly just go on as planned by the orchestrators of the event, it feels kind of unsatisfying. Still a good, even though bleak historic epic with a decent cast.

It makes complete sense that Chereau was an opera director; every setpiece in Queen Margot is a staggering medley of innumerable bodies in motion, sweeping cameras and some exquisite production design leading us from one monstrous act to another. He retains Dumas’s dense plotting while also turning it into a Jacobean revenge play – whoever thinks of their film’s opening act culminating in a brutal massacre that makes Paris look like a plague-infested village. Seemingly playful in her incestuous loyalties…

Is there anything Isabelle Adjani can’t do? She’s something close to divine in this bloody, sumptuous historical political drama based on Alexandre Dumas’ iconic novel. Every scene she’s in (which is luckily most of them), she delivers layers of nuance, interiority and passion as a woman caught in an impossible situation, navigating love, loyalty, sex and survival. She’s supported by a mostly good cast and some truly terrific costuming and direction, but the movie does get bogged down in the middle in a way that unfortunately drags and squanders what had been strong narrative momentum. Overall though, it’s a thrilling ride through the 1500s.

It tells the story of Queen Margot’s struggle to survive in a political marriage and sectarian wars in the midst of a conflict between Catholics and Protestants in France in 1572. Margot is a member of the Catholic Valois dynasty and is married to Henri, the Protestant king of Navarre. This marriage is apparently aimed at ensuring peace between the two sects. But the wedding is the beginning of a major political conspiracy in Paris. When the tension between Catholics…

Magnifique.

Every scene with Henri and Marguerite is a masterclass in acting.. the only issue is that there wasn’t enough of this in the 3 hours.

Definitely a great film and I really enjoyed it, but I can’t lie, it felt a little dragged out at times. I just wish they’d shown Henri of Bourbon becoming king, converting to Catholicism, and everything that came after. Would’ve loved to see where his story went. — your mother hates me. — yours hated me first! — yours KILLED mine! to hell with sentimentality. passion finds its language in rage and seduction, making it all the more intoxicating by its gorgeous, soft color palette.

Gritty history lesson. Unbelievable pictures—as the summer heat and lust turn into a bloodbath. How the brothers envy, fueled by their mother’s scheming, culminate in a catastrophe. Disturbing: Isabell Adjana’s untouchable beauty, despite all the grime Somewhat irritating: Conversations between two actors usually involve their sweaty bodies wrestling with each other, running their hands through each other’s long, wet hair, and constantly taking off and putting on dirty clothing.

ANCIENTS IN AUGUST DAY 4 I feel like a lot of these movies are going to be palace intrigue heavy, although probably not as bloody. This had a bit of the “40s gangster problem” in that a lot of these longhaired Frenchmen with light facial hair look alike.

Queen Margot is what happens when a historical epic stops being interested in making history look noble. This is not the Renaissance as a museum piece. It is the Renaissance as a nightmare. Blood on silk. Bodies beneath beds. Religious fanaticism in the streets. Political marriages. Poison. Sex. Betrayal. Murder. Catholicism and Protestantism tearing a country apart while the aristocracy treats human beings like pieces on a chessboard. And somehow, in the middle of all this, Chéreau finds something genuinely…

When I saw “Queen Margot” for the first time in May 1994 at the Cannes Film Festival, it was like looking at the home movies of complete strangers – in this case, the French. All of the many, many characters on the screen were apparently intimately familiar to those around me, but I was at sea. Eventually a few familiar faces came swimming toward me from out of long-ago history classes: Catherine de Medici, for example. But the film didn’t…
