A while back I promised I’d reevaluate this. My rating went up a star or two, for sure, but I’ve still got plenty of issues with it both from a filmmaking and character standpoint (the latter is something I’ll touch on in a bit). It’s not incredible by any means, but it also in no way deserves to be rated nearly as low as it is. The writing is no doubt trashy trash—bad dialogue, corny editing, hammy acting, weird pockets of comedy that are tonally jarring, cartoony Italian mobsters and laughably dumb parkour-enthusiast henchmen—but it’s genuine in how badly it wants to bring a comics-accurate Punisher story to life, primarily evident in how fucking gruesome and violent it is…

this has one of those 2 star ebert reviews where you can tell he loved it but cant bring himself to admit it “You used to be able to depend on a bad film being poorly made. No longer. “The Punisher: War Zone” is one of the best-made bad movies I’ve seen. It looks great, it hurtles through its paces and is well-acted. The soundtrack is like elevator music if the elevator were in a death plunge. The special effects are state of the art. Its only flaw is that it’s disgusting.” reading eberts big movie yearbooks as a kid he was always giving genre flicks these hilarious specific detail-oriented bad reviews, breathlessly recounting everything in the movie like a…

One of the best looking color films, period. The use of colored lighting is gorgeous, the cinematography is gorgeous, the action is spectacular, it’s very true to the comic. What really sucks is no one appreciate it and it killed director Lexi Alexander’s career. One failure from a woman director and that’s it you’re done, that’s Hollywood for you and it fucking sucks. Ray Stevenson is a complete force as Frank and god I miss him. RIP 🕊

adventures of meat-fist bone-cruncher. lexi alexander and her DP make this look like dominio-era tony scott, high-contrast color saturation through the roof, beautiful off-center compositions, nice meaty squibs and trashy nu-metal music, so close to perfection; exactly what i want out of one of these things except for all the obligatory “a-bloo-bloo-bloo i gotta stop being a killing machine because i shot one cop” stuff that seems endemic to the comic character psyche — ‘one last job’, sure, except if you’ve spent SIX YEARS mercing dudes non-stop i seriously doubt you’re gonna give a shit about collateral damage starting in year no. seven. the hack screenwriters behind these films always gotta find some reason to humanize an inhuman psychopath like…

Ray Stevenson’s the best movie Punisher. You really sense that he loathes himself almost as much as the Mafia, and he looks like he stepped out of a Tim Bradstreet cover. Besides him, though, I’m never quite gotten the love this one gets. It’s always struck me as the movie version of a fill-in issue — the extremely generic and forgettable comics that would come out between more consequential stories to keep a series on schedule. The Punisher enters the movie as the Punisher and exits it completely unchanged. In between, there’s a lot of violence and action, which is mostly choppy and bland except for the one moment with the rocket launcher everyone likes. The only character who has…

As a fixture, always found punisher to be more of a silhouette. Perhaps the “Point” but a lame one at that. Got some great color work and Dominic West’s impression of an impression of a mob boss trumps all. One snowfall away from being a max payne adaption.

The punisher shot a rocket at a guy who was doing parkour and he just got dematerialized. That was awesome! The main bad guy and his brother are the definition of goons and that was entertaining too. Other than that it was kinda eh

This is kind of a disgusting, horrible movie and very much (intentionally or not) a direct evocation of conservative exploitation shoot-em-up garbage largely left behind in the ‘80s. That said, if this came out in the ‘80s, we’d be celebrating it as a cult classic today. So hyper violent and morally vacuous that it ends up hewing closer to splatter horror than an action movie, with a good bit of intentional humor and effective use of grimy comic iconography. Frank Castle literally explodes someone’s head on a toilet and then sits moodily in church feeling the weight of his sins. Kind of amazing

I feel like I was pleasantly surprised by this. Still a bad movie don’t get me wrong. But it’s watchable. It’s very creative with its gore and definitely doesn’t hold back. And any scene with Jigsaw was enjoyable. However, the dialogue sounds like it was made last minute. I wish they’d delved deeper into his backstory. Kind of feels like “here’s a guy with a dead family, look at how angry he is”.

This was not nearly as bad ass as I remember it when I was young. Leads do okayyyy but nothing special. Moments of shitty acting follow pretty much everyone in this. Corny dialogue by looney bin Jim and honestly his whole character was corny and just cringe. Jigsaw was pretty well done tho. The corny cop who follows the punisher and loves him is also annoying as hell. Moments of cool action and good gore make this slightly enjoyable. This…

This movie feels like a puzzle that was put together but still with a bunch of pieces missing; ironic for a movie with a character caned “Jigsaw” in it. Killer opening for a film but sadly the rest of the film doesn’t match the same energy and lacks substance in terms of characters and story.

The best onscreen Punisher by far. It’s Frank Castle as Jason Voorhees with a kink for criminals instead of sex-frenzied teens. The last gasps of a dying (wider) Marvel movie world before the MCU smothered it. One day I need to watch a physical disc version to get the ultimate version of Frank’s La Cosa Nostra entrance. Good connection or not, the digital version maims the darker shades just before he lights that flare and does some extreme(ly ridiculous) damage.

Amazing movie! I can’t believe I waited this long to see this. Had style and Frank Castle actually looked like The Punisher. Good makeup on the mafia villain Jigsaw. Wayne Knight has a supporting role as a weapons dealer named Microchip, and the Persian king from 300 is a cop trying to capture the Punisher. The subplots and side characters are all good. Would highly reccomend this stylized action movie!

One of the more gruesome and gnarly movies I’ve ever seen. Although I was obviously not a huge fan there’s no denying that the movie is unique. Some of the kills and characters were revolting to look at but in an interesting way. This movie is just weird as hell. It had a black pirate parkour guy speaking in an Irish accent for seemingly no reason. I wish we got more of Soap as a fan of him in the Punisher comics.

This movie was so great when it comes to comic book type of feels. They really succeeded on that part. I’m a big fan of the heavily overreacted damage that gets done when someone ggets hit, shot, etc.. it makes the film just fun to watch. objectively underrated. for Punisher fans, it’s a pretty good time. Ray Stevenson plays the part well. it’s vibrant and colorful. Jigsaw is fun. idk what they were doing with Looney Bin Jim, maybe it’s his lines, his acting, or both but it’s rough. i can’t help but feel like this is the last good (R-rated) Punisher film we’ll get until Disney burns.

Road To Doomsday EP.29 “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” I liked this a lot less than the 2004 version. I thought the plot was very boring and the villain was way too goofy. Only good things were a few action moments, the lighting, and the church scenes. Everything else was fine. Let me get back to the MCU!

Having the hoodlums do parkour is such a Studio Note of This Film’s Era, like Mr. Freeze’s roller-blading henchmen in Batman & Robin or the skateboarding, basketball-dunking Lost Boys in Hook. But, as with everyone else in this movie, Frank guns them down with grim remorseless. Extrajudicial killing is good! Even if it’s a mugger! Just as long as it’s not an undercover cop! (This movie is reprehensibly ugly in its outlook on humanity, which I guess is why so many cops really identify with this character? But at least it’s stylish about it? I dunno, man. Not a lot to cheer here.)

Why was James Russo a cannibal? Yeah this has no apologies on him being the punisher, it doesn’t endorse him either it just lets him be a monster. The action is good in this, there is some genuinely creative kills, it has the cartoonish goriness and brutality of Deadpool.

3/10 The only thing going for this movie was the over the top and gory action. The plot sucked, there was no character development, the movie jumps around all the time, and it was just kinda boring. The main villain looks like he should be in a horror B-movie and is just kinda cringe. The movie takes itself so seriously but it ends up coming across as cheesy and when they try to have some comedic relief, it just ends up being cringey.

Absolutely no fat on this puply 2008 slaughterhouse. Surprisingly emotionally deep for what it is. Ray Stevenson and Dominic West are equally as compelling in their roles. The punisher is more of a human tank than ever before, and Jigsaw is the rare type of crime boss who is as flamboyant as his top goons. Even for a superhero movie this was cliché as hell! Though I will admit some parts were fun and I did think the movie had some good visuals. And I was honestly surprised by how brutal it was which for a punisher movie I think is necessary, however this is waaay too much and it feels edgy for the sake of being edgy without offering any type of real substance. Again sometimes it was fun but mostly just mindless action and gore pared with bad acting. I do not think I will watch this again.

It’s got an older action-move feel while not feeling old (and the action’s great), the story’s engaging, and I was not expecting to get some actual analysis and commentary on the Punisher and the world he inhabits.
