There’s a shot in this towards the end, Danny Glover is on the Predator’s ship and he sees a bunch of skulls of the Predator’s other kills, one of which is clearly the distinctively elongated head of our old friend the xenomorph. This reminded me of when the world was young, and corporate America hadn’t quite finished corrupting pop culture into a never ending polluted river of tie-ins, sequels, reboots, crossovers, and you could just have a shot of a xenomorph skull without it being a commercial for the next movie, just a cool little thing most people probably wouldn’t notice, for the fans. Where did we go wrong?

After twenty years I still have nothing but love for this. We all have this kind of film. A film we know is flawed, but we love it anyway. I can point out what’s wrong with it (talking Predator, hello!!??), but I’m not going to, you already know what’s wrong with it. I’d rather talk about what I love about it. I love that this time it takes place in an urban jungle. I love the cheesy depiction of a ‘future’ L.A. I love the Paxton, grinning his way through his crappy dialogue. I love the Busey, chewing his way through his crappy dialogue. I love the final battle between the Glover and the Predator. I love the final scene, hinting of a universe yet to explore. I just love it. Period.

“Okay, pussyface. It’s your move.” “Shit happens.” How stupid this is cannot be overstated. But what it lacks in losing McTiernan’s graceful geography and Arnold’s sheer charisma it makes up for with a cranked-up Danny Glover and level of cartoonish luridness that would make Frank Miller wince. The Morton Downey Jr.-fronted tabloid news, the ridiculous “urban jungle” conceit (complete with Jamaican voodoo gangbangers in gold lamé parachute pants), straight on down to Gary Busey, bathed in ultraviolet light, trying to hold off the monster with a high-tech fire extinguisher. The last 45 minutes is basically one giant chase scene, almost entirely shot in graphic novel splash pages, monochromatic, all surface. A jolt machine.

61/100 Aged, graded, and packaged cheese of ultra violence and piercing expansion, Predator 2 feels like a complete subversion of the original classic, only revealing its original vitality when its candy-colored components are spurting out. It’s also another one of those 1980s experiments that happened to be released in 1990. Aged cheese has never tasted this good.

The entire death scene of King Willie is so sick. Invisible Pred drops down into a puddle in a dark alleyway. Electricity crackles as his camouflage begins to dissipate. Willie solemnly unsheathes his sword and the two square off. Seamless transition from Willie’s battle cry to a close up of his severed head with mouth agape. Pred meticulously cleaning the head until only the skull remains, after which he places it on his gigantic wall of trophies. Franchise gold, right there. I’ve always been a bit hard on this movie in the past. I still don’t think it does enough to earn full cult status, but some of the bits are undoubtably classic. “It’s alright, I’m a cop!” “I don’t think he gives a shit!” Also, Morton Downey Jr.’s Tony Pope is one of the top 5 most amazingly psycho reporters in all of cinema.

Watched with Stephen Hopkins commentary; the most interesting thing I learned was how incredibly complicated it is to make an invisible Predator walk across a puddle of water. I also enjoy how sweaty this movie is. In one scene, Bill Paxton sweats through his shirt AND his jacket. A true hero.

Weirdly clunky and regressive, and dumb even by the pulp standards its aiming for, but its total cartoon rendition of LA gang wars (combined with the mythic lore stuff) is largely fun and the kills are gnarly so who am I to complain? Danny Glover as an intergalactic gladiator? Sure. Why not.

1990’s Predator 2 portrays 1997 L.A. as a drug riddled cesspool of ultra violence—a concrete jungle battlefield of anything goes filth infested anarchy, filled with rabid gangs, Rastaman drug lords, chaotic street warzones, cocaine factories on every corner, King Willy, more blood/explosions/guns/violence/insanity, Robert Davi, and to top it off it exists in a world where someone put Gary Busey in charge of a special ops team. Hold on to your butts. I love this absurd sequel.

Segundo filme do Predador segue a mesma cartilha estrutural que o primeiro filme. Em vez de árvores e lama, temos o caos urbano de Los Angeles como arena. EDIT: Realized I watched this on the exact same day two years ago. To make matters even crazier, I had laid out several DVDs and Blu-rays for my wife to pick and she picked the Predator collection and I just HAPPENED to pick 2. Weird. Danny Glover really goes through all of that just for one of those Predators to be like “I dunno, here’s some lore.” Love the Predator making medicine with building pieces and blue goo. This isn’t like a great movie, but it isn’t by any means a bad movie. But it’s also very much a bad movie.

“shit happens” I like this more than the first one. That’s something, isn’t it? It has some cool moments like the climax in the spaceship. I’m looking at you, xenomorph skull! Most of the dialouge was bad and I could’ve done without the over the top action scenes (and that one sex scene). And what was up with the random voodoo stuff? I really wanted to turn this off in the first thirty minutes but I pushed through it and it got better. btw…not the predator cooking meth in grannys bathroom

Une très bonne suite, qui n’aura évidemment jamais l’aura du premier Predator, mais qui a au moins le mérite de prendre de vrais risques. Déjà, le choix de quitter la jungle pour Los Angeles aurait pu être une catastrophe, mais je trouve au contraire que c’est l’une des meilleures idées du film. Cette fois, la jungle devient urbaine. La ville est étouffante, chaude, crasseuse, violente, et Stephen Hopkins arrive plutôt bien à recréer cette sensation de huis clos au milieu…
