I saw someone refer to this as a “female version of Frankenstein” which is funny because Frankenstein was written by a (brilliant) woman and this was quite obviously written by a man.

absolutely movie of the year for me. unbelievably funny and thoughtful and gorgeous, i wanted to pause on every frame! every character is rendered with such care and depth and without a hint of morality placed on their actions for the audience. would make an incredible double bill with The Lobster obviously, but also Titane. obvious why everyone’s discussing this from a feminist lens but as someone 2 years out of an autism diagnosis i saw a lot of that in this story as well; bella’s curiosity and pursuit of enlightenment felt so familiar to me and the ways i’ve had to constantly reprocess my own ideas of love, sex, gender, intimacy, shame, responsibility, friendship, work, privacy, interests, and pleasure…

objecting to a movie essentially everyone adores is a very lonely feeling. and i don’t think i’ve ever been so outnumbered. this movie was not made for me, yes, but that inevitably becomes its very problem. how can a movie that marketed itself as an exploration of womanhood not be for me? maybe it’s because my feminism is not stuck in thoughtless 2010s 3rd wave influenced sexual liberation that deems fucking the most empowering thing a woman can do. maybe it’s because my feminism was not developed through providing a redemption arc to the hubristic and possessive yet endlessly wise men around me. maybe it’s because my feminism doesn’t have an unnecessarily rosy and dangerously humorous view of sex work and the conditions that often force women into the industry. but i am so deeply worried about feminism if this is the kind of movie the masses choose to uphold. L + steampunk + frankenstein ripoff

This was such a weird movie. The production design and visuals are absolutely insane, and I loved how unapologetically bizarre the whole thing is. Emma Stone was great, and Bella’s whole journey was probably my favourite part. Definitely not for everyone, but I had a really good time with it.

beautiful in terms of music, cinematography, good acting. other than that wtf was this movie? it was like watching a man try to explore feminism or something stupid. not that feminism is stupid, just this odd portrayal of it. some cool aspects but overall just a weird ass movie

I think that the best way to address this movie is to call it a surrealist fable that thrives precisely because it refuses to conform to literalism or conventional morality. A lot of the debate around the film ended up examining its surreal premise under a rather pedantic, literal microscope, but Yorgos Lanthimos himself offered the best defense: “If you take a film that literally, where you start discussing it in terms of the brain of a child, then you’re…

I do not care for polite society. It’s fucking boring. It destroys one’s soul. What can I say about this film. Profoundly disturbing and uncomfortable, abstract and whimsical, and all around absolutely fucked…..I loved it.

this made me feel so uneasy but I can understand why people like it so much, just wasn’t my type although I really felt it when she wanted to punch the child lmao

Sick movie. There were so many unnecessary scenes and events in this one. Despite that, I really liked the colors and overall design of the film. Even with its disturbing story, I enjoyed the flow and direction. I also have to commend Emma’s acting in this one. She really portrayed the character perfectly, and the role suited her so well. However, I wish they had removed some of the unnecessary sex scenes. I understand that they were trying to depict different stages of life, but I felt that some of those scenes were excessive and didn’t really add much to the story.

2O13 white feminism ass film feels like it was written by an AI bot using some of Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham’s talking points from press interviews circa 2O14… sure it is visually striking and has decent acting performances but such a great cast was underutilized in my opinion due to the weak premise and poor execution of this film’s plot. I can see the points the film attempted to make regarding women’s infantilisation, agency, female sexuality under patriarchy, etc. but somehow the end result was disjointed and dull.

litterally THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!! this movie is MY FAVORITE. Emma Stone in this movie is so peak, and it’s so cool to see how she transitions from acting like a baby to a fully functioning human. would recommend this movie to ANYONE, especially those who like “weird” movies 🙂

Komisch aber emma stone ist krass

N
the movie is definitely not feminist, it’s very misogynistic even but I think it knows that

M
Väldigt delade känslor för den här filmen. Till stora delar är det en obehaglig kvasi-feministisk Frankenstein rip off, men det fanns samtidigt mycket att tycka om. Den förtjänar både ½ och 5.

pregnant woman attempts suicide and is saved by a scientist by transplanting the baby’s brain into the woman’s body. between Lobster, Bugonia and this, i swear this dude Yorgos Lanthimos brain does not function like a normal person. cinematography is gorgeous and its quite funny at times. i get the women empowerment and “experiencing the world with childlike wonder” stuff, but the fact that the movie revolves around sex and her mental age is like a toddler at the start,…

Revisiting this film I’m torn because whilst overall I’m ever so slightly less keen on this movie on rewatch, the heights of this film are breathtaking and incredible, surreal visuals and soundtrack remaining unmatched in the years since its release. I just feel like the approach Yorgos has to the experience of womanhood is a little too reductive and passive commentary/complicity exploitative by not really doing much of substance That said, other readings less centred around a feminist lens will…

“Poor Things” is a sort of rereading of Frankenstein’s monster with Willem Dafoe playing the role of the architect of a creature divinely played by Emma Stone, beautiful and gigantic in acting performances. I really appreciated the direction of Lanthimos and the director of photography: the alternation of black and white with such vivid and colorful colors in these magnificent very wide shots and sublime camera movements were a joy for the eyes. Bella is a creature that faces a…

Godwin, an acclaimed Victorian surgeon, transplants the brain of an unborn baby into the head of its recently deceased mother. The result is Bella Baxter: a physical adult with the mind of a child. Godwin recruits Max McCandles to monitor Bella’s development, and Max observes her rapid progress in speech and cognition — eventually falling in love with her. But Bella still has the mind of a child. She makes constant demands like a spoiled youngster, throws tantrums when she…
