Beyond setting a great deal of the template for how movies would look at this conflict going forward or being a reportedly excruciatingly faithful recreation of “what it was really like”, this manages to touch on so many slivers of context. Race and socioeconomic pressures on the grunts back home and in military heirarchy, intelligence and administrative failures, nuts-and-bolts technical stuff, on and on. Often further evidence of Stone’s widely humanist intentions, too. What tends to be dismissed as a lack of subtlety is often an attempt to articulate the broadest possible experience. This time it even kind of reminded me of Sade’s “Justine”*, aka “The Misfortunes of Virtue”. Not taking pleasure in the torture but understanding it on the…

“I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy; we fought ourselves. And the enemy was in us.” If all war films were as good and sincere as Platoon it would probably be one of my favorite genres, but there are very few exceptions where the material is treated right as most directors tend to either be incredibly biased debating either in favor or against the war. It’s strange I make this claim since Platoon is obviously an anti-war film, but it treats the material with an honesty you don’t find in other films of the genre. It is much easier to make a statement like this in a war that everyone considers was a terrible mistake to…

95 Incident to incident. Snake slithering around foot. Lizard crawling on head of stone. Smoke against foliage against blood against the deepest cries of anguish. Screams in the dark. Flares and claymores. An environment and a moment in history which will not and cannot be explained to us. One of the few narrative war films that not only doesn’t apologize for its slaughter (the Vietcong aren’t simply Otherized, in addition abstracted among nature’s wrath – humans retaliating because they need to), but doesn’t offer the tools to comprehend the images laid out in silent, foreboding succession. Why should it? Vietnam happened. America let it happen. We’re lucky Oliver Stone could display such a coherent political framework within the infantry depiction…

As Adagio for Strings reaches its orchestral conclusion and Chris monologues, searching for some sign of life beyond the rear window of an army helicopter, he can’t help but reckon with the fact that this is bound to go on for all eternity and that this violence is destined to consume the rest of his days. Oliver Stone’s operatic opus.

A lot more romantic about the American War in Vietnam than I remembered. It’s a tad long but as a film it’s well shot, well paced and well directed. What I really loved was the historiography that comes with a movie like this. Certain shots and scenes meant as snapshot representations of America’s greatest failure, burning villages, extra judicial killings, asymmetrical warfare. You hardly ever get a glimpse of the NVA until you’re dead. It communicates why America failed, and…

Honestly couldn’t tell which direction this movie was headed in. Was it a comedy, or a more realistic approach. After watching the entire thing, obviously I have more clarity. However I didn’t feel it aligned with more of a serious approach, largely due to the production. I have to take 1980s movies with a grain of salt because they are not going to be produced as well as modern movies, but still. It was great to see the character development from someone who was fresh to nam, from the beginning to when he left.

Feel good is good enough, je crois avec des soldats défoncés. Mais ptn c’est bien, la musique on a envie de se casser de cette enfer. Tout est bien bababa. Le méchant avec la big cicatrice de batard, qui est terrifiant. Moralité du film Fuck Babylone.

I’m glad that this film was made, however I wasn’t that interested in it. But it was really well-written on how they portrayed Barnes and Elias. The fact that you can see the both of them in Taylor is a fantastic element.

Films like these are often so comical to me because when you end the film with a dedication to Vietnam veterans, but then show the atrocities committed by them with no respect for the perspective of the colonized, shows a lack of critical thinking and nuance from not only the director, but the producer as well as the average viewer. At the end of the day, this fact largely relegates this film to the level of American military propaganda, unfortunately. The film was executed well though; it had nice pacing and particularly the performance of Barnes stood out to me.

Vietnam films are usually so fucking good and this is not a exception just found out this one best film in 87 well deserved. I loved Willem Dafoe so charismatic in everything he’s ever done. Dude genuinely had swag running around the jungle another W score. A lot of acting juggernauts that we’re just making a name for their self, I think Charlie Sheen does a pretty great job. Slowly unwinding emotionally from all the things going on around him not as good as his old man but still a hell of a job

Continuing the Vietnam war movie streak. No shortage of iconic imagery in Platoon — but it remains a very bleak and gloomy story.
