The ideal anti-war film. An endeavour that has been reduced down to its simplest fundamentals. Kubrick managed to depict the process of war dehumanising people, using the protagonist as his puppet, demonstrating the power of communication, and representing humanity as a collective. During a time when many films were pro-war, Kubrick, in his late 20s, posed crucial concerns about the purpose of war and the estrangement caused by it. At his most attentive and compassionate as a filmmaker. Every character represents something, and each war-torn sequence is extremely powerful. This is easily one of the best anti-war films ever made, in my eyes.

A 60-year-old anti-war film that feels like it could have been filmed and released last year, PATHS OF GLORY pulls no punches. It’s not just that war is hell, but that it’s a Kafka-esque enterprise pushed by men who know it’s pointless, who know it’s absurd, but who nonetheless feed the beast out of venal self-interest, outright bloodlust, or both. And it almost goes without saying that the entire trench sequence — from Kirk Douglas walking down to his battalion to the charge into No Man’s Land — is incredible, virtuosic filmmaking. The kind of accomplishment that most directors would kill to have just once in their career.

”Your men died very well Colonel.” My knowledge of German language is zero. I don’t understand any single word of it but when in the closing moments of the movie the captured young German girl starts singing, like the awe-struck French soldiers, I was in tears. After witnessing some of the most frustrating, painful and upsetting scenes of any war movie, like the characters involved in the film, we viewers find, for the first time, a glimpse of hope, beauty and innocence in the German girl’s voice so there is no surprise that finally in that moment we break too, a moment when all that suppressed emotion finds its way out. Portraying and studying situations where things like hope, respect,…

Unlike Spartacus, there is no question in my mind which ‘tier’ of Kubrick picture to put Paths of Glory. Though all his pictures are superficially dramatic, what attracts me so much to Kubrick – even more than his directorial skill – is the undercurrent of hilarity that runs through them. Whether it’s Barry Lyndon’s doomed quest for wealth and recognition, Alex’s lust for violence, or Joker’s search for truth in a war characterized by cover-ups, each of Kubrick’s stories have a central conceit that is utterly absurd at their core, especially when viewed out of context. Most often, that idea is the destructive power of hubris; that confidence – a value so lauded – is the root cause of all…

This film is brave and bold and it’s what makes Kubrick the director he is, during the time of film where pro-war had been normalised, this makes this anti-war film extremely special. It dives into many corrupt aspects of what war is really like and I think so many people need to become more educated in this, including myself. The war was controlled by those who sat on their ass in their palaces nowhere near the battlefield. The final scene…

“Gentlemen of the court, there are times I am ashamed to be a member of the human race and this is one such occasion.” I think it is best to review this in the two separate acts of the film, the battlefield and the court-martial. Ferol was the realest character. This is my first Stanley Kubrick film and this great intro to his filmography. This movie does really well for being a movie made in the 50s. Kubrick did a lot of good with his movie. It a great representation of corruption. It’s also shows how the ones at the top will never get punished while the ones who are at the bottom will. Overall great film and great intro to Kubrick.

The last scene itself is terrifying. The second half of the movie is perfect, keeps you locked in every single second, same for the first one but the second one, wow. Great anti-war message about its cruelties, the value of human life and of course hepocrusy. “If it’s death that you’re really afraid of, why should you care what kills you?” this film carries a strong anti war message, and its pacing remains pretty bearable given its short runtime. You can already see the glimpses of Kubrick’s visual style and ambition, but compared to what came later, the execution feels less polished. It’s impressive for an early career film especially since he was in his late 20’s, but I don’t think it quite reaches the level…

Paths of Glory is only around 88 minutes long, yet it says more about war, power and human cruelty than movies twice its length. There are no glorious victories here and barely any interest in making war look heroic. Amazing set!!! The 3 prisoners showed very different perspectives. One being punished for standing up to his superior, one for being an outcast, and one randomly chosen. I love how all 3 of them had different reactions to the news based on their situation and Kubrick’s ability to contrast the difference in perspective just before they are shot. I need to watch more old films to determine why the impact of this movie is larger than others.

it’s crazy how bad war and authority can turn men into slobbering pigs who have no sense of human compassion. Kubrick does an amazing job at displaying this, and the outright stupidity of some of these characters is the exact reason why war shouldn’t be handled the way it is. you’d think that these officers would have some sort of compassion in the court case, but no. Massive set pieces, beautiful cinematography, anchored by a strong performance by Kirk Douglas. I was yelling at my TV about the injustices happening before me and hollering when…

There’s always a thrill in visiting an old classic for the first time. Will it still hold up? Will it work for me as well as for many others before? With a Kubrick I shouldn’t have doubted that, but still it took a little for Paths of Glory to convince me of it’s undeniable quality. The opening dialouges were strong, the long shots of people marching through impressive trench sets still hold up and are just as impressive as similar…

One of the most powerful anti-war movies I’ve ever seen. No matter which side you’re on, at the end of the day, we’re all just human beings. It’s so terrifying how easily war can turn people into numbers, or make us feel like we’re just pieces on a chessboard, making us forget that every soldier is someone with a life, a family, a reason to live. And maybe the scariest part is how easily systems can make us forget our humanity when it benefits those in power😭😭🙏
