Can confirm this movie is real, and not bad! We all know I’m a Guy Ritchie apologist but I think people expect too much from the brit – he’s definitely in his era of making fun 3.5/5 romps that are a little bit sexy, a little bit clever, and a little bit too expositional. I have to admit I doubted him in the first act but this goes on to provide his trademark banter and action to a totally satisfying degree. There’s one sequence where the camera is attached to Jason Statham’s gun while he takes a bunch of guys out and I could’ve watched twenty more minutes of it. Ritchie brings out Hugh Grant’s silly side yet again and it’s wonderful. Aubrey Plaza is literally just hanging out and having fun. Josh Hartnett is a star. Good vibes all around.

Bottom of the barrel action/comedy. Kinda boring. Aubrey Plaza must have wanted a free trip to Europe for her next project.

I’m gonna tell you what I tell my wife: sure, it’s mediocre but don’t act like you didn’t have a good time.

Lets get this out of the way first. Terrible title. Even after seeing the movie, I keep having a hard time remembering what the hell the name of this movie is. And the closest I get is Operation: Something or Other — The Rise of Gru. Essentially, this is Guy Ritchie directing a Mission: Impossible movie, at least in terms of the plot. There’s a [spoiler I guess] super duper ai decryption tool being sold to the highest bidder for purposes of world domination. There’s a top secret team tasked with recovering this item. And there’s an elaborate ruse as a part of the heist to recover this item. It feels rather generic but with the right cast and action set pieces,…

“Hey hon, do you want to go the movies tonight?” “Maybe. What’s playing?” “The only thing we haven’t seen is Operation Fortune.” “Who’s in it?” “Jason Statham is the star. Uh, Aubrey Plaza? Cary Elwes. Hugh Grant is the bad guy. Josh Hartnett, haven’t seen him much lately. That’s kind of fun that he’s in it.” “Eh, I don’t know. What else can you tell me about it?” “Um… not much, honestly. Let’s see …the subtitle is Ruse de Guerre?” “WHY DIDN’T YOU FUCKING SAY THAT RIGHT AWAY WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR LET’S GO LET’S GO LET’S GO!”

I never seek out Guy RItchie movies, but every time I see one, I enjoy myself. This cast is just charm from top to bottom, and they make this work, even when the lines boil down to, “Did you say Mike?” “Yeah. Mike.” “That mike?” “That Mike” “I hate that Mike.” “Yeah, he hates you too.” “Bloody Mike” And this was *constant*. Every scene had exchanges like this. But again, when it’s Aubrey Plaza and Jason Statham bouncing off Hugh fucking Grant, it’s infinitely watchable.

I miss the old Guy Ritchie, straight out of London Guy Ritchie Snatchin’ up the scenes Guy Ritchie, Lock, Stock, and Smoking Barrels Guy Ritchie I hate the new Guy Ritchie, lack of style Guy Ritchie The always boring Guy Ritchie, same schtick Guy Ritchie I miss the slick Guy Ritchie, sharp editing and wit Guy Ritchie I gotta say, back then I’d like to meet Guy Ritchie

Guy Ritchie’s Mission: Impossible Josh Hartnett is so funny here, and Aubrey Plaza is such a great fit for Ritchie. Plenty of the usual Statham action too. I really enjoyed it

A solid Statham action movie that knows exactly what it wants to be: dumb, entertaining fun with some decent action, cheesy one-liners and Jason Statham being Jason Statham. It’s nothing groundbreaking and the story is pretty forgettable, but the cast keeps it watchable and there are enough fun moments to make it worth the runtime. Still, it never really rises above being a fairly generic spy action flick. If you’re here for Statham kicking ass and delivering sarcastic one-liners, you’ll probably have a good time. But for me, it’s just not memorable enough to go beyond 3/5. 3/5 ⭐

The stylish visual presentation and snappy dialogue, along with Guy Ritchie’s knack for making the most of his cast’s individual personalities to create characters who are both cool and endearing, are unmistakably his signature. Hugh Grant is particularly good, especially as his role shifts toward the end. The scene recreated during the end credits is also wonderfully satisfying.
