This movie’s gradual evolution from the utterly mundane to the existentially bleak is tough to shake afterward. A wide open space has rarely felt more claustrophobic.

Based on True Events First of all, this looked like it was shot on an iPhone 3GS. Shark movies are so bad but damn they’re so entertaining especially when you watch it with people. This is why I will never do some wild shit like swim with sharks. Why would you want to do that? I don’t get it. I’m fine on land. I have enough threats to die on land, why would I want to increase my chances of death by swimming with some damn sharks?

Massive issue with this film. Meant to be based on a true story about 2 people stranded in the middle of the ocean that end up dead. If this is the case then no one has any idea what reall happened. The only two true events are that they didnt get back on the boat and they died. That mean anything could have happened, including being taken to a dolphin underwater fortress before being killed by over excited star fish. I wanted to go skiing.

Hooptober 5.0: Film 28/33 Jesus! That was fucking harrowing. Films like this, and Frozen, make me so bloody glad that I don’t do “exciting” things like scuba diving or skiing. Every once in a while, a horror film comes along that presents a scenario so frighteningly real, and entirely plausible. A film that sidesteps your defenses and bypasses the notion that it’s only a movie. A film that presents the viewer with a scenario so horrifying that a swift death would be preferable. But more importantly, a scenario that could easily happen and, in this case, did happen. Based loosely on the story of Tom and Eileen Lonergan, who in 1998 went out with a scuba diving group on the…

It was like a really boring home movie that went on far too long. Daniel was absolutely useless. All project, no passion. I’d have left them behind too, boring as shit couple. Not even that interesting of a shark either really.

“The school of jellyfish featured in the movie showed up on the day the crew planned to film that particular scene; it was not switched to film that scene on behalf of the jellyfish. Coincidentally, after that day, no jellyfish ever appeared on location for the whole duration of the shoot.”

Boring and so poorly acted. How are people saying this is suspenseful? There isn’t a single suspenseful moment in the whole film. Nothing noteworthy even happens until the last 15 minutes. Might be the dullest shark movie I’ve ever seen.

I felt the suspense. If it weren’t shot from a camera potato with the found footage look, I would not have felt the suspense. I think it helped the film. She was right, about them doing everything late. She was also right about swimming. And skiiing.

🌊 The Ocean Has Never Felt This Empty Open Water is a perfect example of how a simple premise can become genuinely terrifying when it feels believable. There are no elaborate set pieces, no huge action sequences, and very little spectacle. It is just two people stranded in the middle of the ocean, slowly realizing that nobody knows they are missing. What makes the movie work so well is the sense of isolation. The open sea becomes almost like a…

Only thing I can admire about the movie is how they used real sharks and fish the whole movie through. Pretty cool, dudeee. Yea that’s it, the director just wanted the woman to be naked for no reason or plot to the story. Super weird. Never adressed it. Just whole frontal… Nude. Just strange, I see you Chris… Kentis… I see who you really are. No slippery slope out of this one mr writer, director and EDITOR. You suck at all those things, goodbye. Ps: Poor couple didn’t desserve their adaptation of the most traumatic day of their life by this shitty film😭

A slow burn, middle of the road shark thriller. DIY film making is competent, there’s just not enough going on to make this scary. The pair are just floating in the water most of the movie, no gripping dialogue, a jellyfish encounter with a few sharks who dont do much. Credit for using real sharks but I just dont find this very entertaining

Open Water (2004) was a massive letdown. Promoted as the best shark movie since Jaws, it fails to deliver on almost every level. Instead of thrilling survival horror, you’re stuck watching two people drift endlessly while waiting for something -anything- to happen. Even when a shark finally strikes, it bites once, draws blood, and casually swims away (when does that happen??), completely deflating whatever minimal tension was built up. I kept holding out hope for a big payoff or an exciting turn of events, but it ended up being one of the most tedious, anti-climactic movie experiences imaginable. Hated it. Do not recommend

Open water feels like some perv is trying to record all of this without getting caught. You’ll see what I mean or know what I’m taking about if you’ve watched this. Why is there so many extreme closeups? Annoyingly out of focus and poorly shot. Characters are rarely in frame. Did the directors kid do the cinematography? The acting is bad for most of the film until the climax. Open water is sold on being realistic and I’ll give it…

Why was this movie shot like a mid-90s porno?? I was so excited for this to be scary but it was awful and completely stupid, under 90 mins and still too long, really one of the worst things I’ve seen. Truly terrible and not even in a ‘let’s watch a bad movie’ kind of way, it’s very dumb and poorly done for a story that should be harrowing.

Rarely, but sometimes, a movie can have an actual physical effect on you. It gets under your defenses and sidesteps the “it’s only a movie” reflex and creates a visceral feeling that might as well be real. “Open Water” had that effect on me. So did “Touching the Void,” the mountain climbing movie from earlier in 2004. After both movies were over, I felt the need to go outside and walk in the sunshine and try to cheer myself up.…
