simultaneously a harrowing and unsparing depiction of the obscene horrors of the israeli occupation in palestine – horrors that have existed long before october 7, 2023 – and also a tremendously tender-hearted tribute to the pure love the palestinian people have for both each other and their land – the only land they’ve ever known. undeniably a gut-wrenching watch, and essentially so, but one that beautifully finds the balance between portraying both palestinian pain and their incredible perseverance under unspeakably inhumane conditions. a miracle of a movie in every sense of the word.

I want to scream at every person who has told me that Israel-Palestine is just too complicated. That both sides have their reasons, and an outsider simply cannot understand or pick a side. I do not see any circumstance in which the systematic displacement of people and claiming of their land can be justified, making someone a second-rate citizen of their homeland, taking their water, electricity, and shelter, in case they may stand up to their oppressors. As a documentary, it is well paced, shot, and edited, but what truly makes it special is its deeply personal tale of resistance. Basel is his parents’ son through and through, the next in line in a family of activists, and it shows.…

~ The Film Industry’s Cowardice on Palestine Threatens to Diminish the Value of Cinema Itself ~ (this isn’t a review, but i know a lot of people only read my stuff on Letterboxd, so i figured in this case i would just post the whole thing here. original is on indiewire. thx.) A few days after Cannes wrapped up last month, my IndieWire colleague Ryan Lattanzio published an interview with filmmaker Nadav Lapid, whose furious new satire of modern Israel quietly premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the very end of the festival. That was a curious and pronounced demotion for a rising auteur whose similarly blistering previous feature (2021’s “Ahed’s Knee”) had been selected for the main Competition,…

Basel Adra’s first memory is of Israeli soldiers raiding his house and arresting his father, a Palestinian activist who’s been fighting to preserve the small mountain community of Masafer Yatta since long before his son was born. Adra was only five years old at the time, but he can still remember the fear of that violation as if it only happened yesterday. In part, that’s because it did; raised in an occupied territory under Apartheid conditions, Adra has never known a life that wasn’t under threat of forced removal. But the freshness of his memory can also be attributed to the fact that Adra has never known a life that wasn’t being documented for his own protection. The most dehumanizing…

Many will come away from this feeling angry, justifiably so, but parroting the “it’s complicated” line that they’ve heard time and time again. But it’s not. It never was. The line has been clear to me for most of my conscious life and it never wavers. Palestine will be free. It must be free.

I’m going to be honest that I’ve been a privileged, self-absorbed chud these past couple months, only caring about sex and drugs, and now that I need to write my thesis, I realise how out of it politically I’ve been, and honestly, it’s embarrassing. Decided to finally watch this to give myself a reality check and contextualise my thesis to remind myself that what I’m writing about is very real. It’s heartbreaking. I don’t even know what to say. From the attacks of 7 October there has been a public pressure to pick sides in a long running conflict. That development also denies everything that happened before then, like the Israeli settles chasing away Palestinians by force. An operation that, as this documentary shows, also only got more violent after October 2023. There’s many brave people who don’t stand a chance against the regime and an army, who have no choice to give up their homes to save their lives. It’s a situation that makes you admire for these people, and angry for their fate. ——————————————————— 6/10 Kees’ challenge

Required viewing, not just for people who care about documentaries or film, but for everyone. There are so many things I could say, but for once, I’m going to let the work speak for itself. Midway through the film, while describing the illegal removal of Palestinian people by settlers, Basel states, “this is a story about power.” It really doesn’t get more concise than that. I wonder how many of the children shown here are still alive.

This film is very bold in addressing a very sensitive topic. Here, we watch Palestine without any censorship or political filter; here,We see the plight of the Palestinian people firsthand, from the Palestinians themselves, not in a film made by the Zionists. May Allah destroy the Zionists and their minions.

Extremely terse and grounding and real. Change is slow and power is brutal and unfair. I’m amazed at the people in this movie (the ones who made it, the villagepeople who are sticking their ground). Really affecting hearing Basel talk, especially in the scenes regarding the internet, his father; as well as seeing the way the settlers enact violence (destroying the school, cutting water pipes). So much to think about but basically i think we all need to be very very realistic about where we are, and harsh on ourselves and our politics

Se documenter sur ce génocide est bien plus qu’une nécessité. Le film retranscrit les événements qui se sont déroulés en Cisjordanie de 2019 à 2023. Les images sont poignantes, les mots manquent. Basel’s work creating this documentary has to be the absolute greatest document of real life bravery and resilence ever captured on film. His hope gradually depreciates over these 4 years, as the IDF continues to pillage their home and strip them of their humanity. Nonetheless, in the film’s final moments, he speaks into power that “they will never make the Palestinians leave this land”. 🇵🇸From the Land to the Sea Palestine Will Be Free🇵🇸

Necessary to see. I found the most tragic part of watching this is that it is a small tiny little section of a larger systematic destruction and annihilation of a group of people. Think of how many other untold stories there are of utter terror, murder, and destruction. Surely a price will one day be paid by the brutal oppressors who have lost their entire humanity. Oppressors always pay the price for that–but they seem to be unaware. Such a tragic and sad story.

A heartbreaking nightmare. If numbers and the inundation of stories and footage aren’t enough for the average person to understand. The focus on this one small village and community puts it into perspective. The spirit of the Palestinian people despite it all gives you a smoldering ember of hope that can be fanned into a flame. The last 30 minutes are especially harrowing. Even if every single Palestinian ends up dead or expelled, they occupiers of this land will never know peace
