Rock solid even if it never becomes the BARRY LYNDON-esque bildungsroman you want it to be. Always up for a Karl Malden heel turn.

A revenge tale that goes on too long. In the beginning Steve McQueen is supposed to be a kid, and half-Indian at that. He doesn’t look either. McQueen is Max Sand, and three guys ride by while he’s working by a river, and they ask about Sam Sand, he tells them that’s his dad and where his mine is located. The guys then run off his horses and take off. By the time he gets back to his house his parents are dead. He sets out to find them, one by one, going from the desert southwest to Abilene, Kansas, then he gets himself put into prison in Louisiana to get another one, then back out west. Other than the…

Nevada Smith is a strangely put-together revenge flick that asks its audience to swallow two pretty enormous casting stretches: we’re supposed to believe that 35-year-old Steve McQueen is a 16-year-old boy and that this blue-eyed, blonde-haired actor is half Native American. I normally like McQueen, but he was simply the wrong choice for Max Sand. Then they compound the problem by casting Suzanne Pleshette as a Cajun, proving that Hollywood’s questionable casting decisions were apparently operating without adult supervision. The film is also far too long and slow-paced for a revenge story that should have considerably more bite. There is a solid supporting cast, including Brian Keith, Martin Landau and Karl Malden, but even that impressive lineup can’t rescue this miscast and overly padded Western.

DVD. Western. A young half-breed goes in search of the three men who tortured and murdered his parents. Given the film’s length, Nevada Smith is intended as a saga of vengeance, but unfortunately it’s little more than a succession of encounters and scenes, most of which are loosely linked. Furtermore, given the age difference between Steve McQueen and the character he plays, his first adventures – which, if we understand the story, should be formative given his naiveté – are ridiculous, the actor choosing to put on a dim-witted air to remind the viewer that he’s a teenager with no experience of life. Opposite the three men wanted by Nevada Smith, we find three women, Neesa, Jesse Coe’s wife and…

Thx Andy for the recommendation and yep you were right. Excellent revenge western with a prime McQueen in main role. Great climax and story in general but the runtime still is a bit too long but at all very enjoyable for western fans.

Woovember 2020: Film #28 Watch an action film starring Steve McQueen to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Magnificent Seven What do you think you’re after, three preachers? You gonna gun ’em down at 80 yards when they’re coming out of a church social? You’re hunting three men who steal because they’re too damn lazy to work, and they kill because they love to, and they hide out like rats in the garbage. So if you’re gonna get ’em, you’re gonna have to eat, drink, and wallow in that garbage right with ’em, ’til you get so you think like ’em and smell like ’em. This revenge western gets pretty rough in some scenes, almost like the kinda stuff you’d see in an Italian picture from that period. Also part of the trusting Arthur Kennedy ruins everything subgenre.

1966 Ranked Physically Owned Films Nevada Smith is really surprising. It isn’t just a simple Western, but a dark Western, a prison break movie, a revenge-o-matic, and a bayou exploitation film. It might be a masterpiece, except for two fatal flaws: First, the film is just too long. It borders on boring at times, and the length isn’t necessary, just bringing uncomfortable saddle sores to a potentially smooth narrative. Second, for the first time in about a dozen films, Steve McQueen didn’t work for me. He gets better as the film goes on for sure, but his portrayal of a naive mixed race youth is misplaced both physically and emotionally. There’s a lot to like here, but starting out with a suspect performance and unnecessary bloat ends up deflating Nevada Smith.

“Nevada Smith” is a 1966 western directed by Henry Hathaway. The film is a journeyman’s western, a showcasing tale of Steve McQueen’s character of Max Sand, dually the title character of “Nevada Smith” himself. Starting the narrative at a younger age, Sand accidentally directs three outlaws to the location of his mother and father, leading them to brutally murder them both in an attempt to rob their gold mine. Sand ideally takes it upon himself to follow in pursuit, but vastly stumbles to inexperience to the elements. There rest of the film sets as a build of him learning the ropes of gunfighting and tracking down each of the three outlaws within their own situations later on of life. A…

Man… this movie really pissed me off lol like 2 hours invested in this dude hunting down the men who killed his family, and all these people tellin him “oh revenge is a fools game” or whatever. And then like he ignores them and kills two of the three, and literally leaves the one dying in a river…. and then says “youre not worth killing” BRUH. LIKE WHAT KINDA ASS BACKWARDS SHIT IS THAT?! You hunt this man, join the posse, lie. LIE LIKE NO ONE HAS LIED BEFORE… and then leave him for dead as if youre the bigger man. My god. What a bullshit ending. Movie was whatever til that point tho. McQueen plays like a child? Dudes like 30… idk… it worked for me since Im a western nerd. I can see how this film might be hard to swallow for lots of folks, but a decent western nonetheless.

As a McQueen fan I’m rather disappointed with this one but pleased to have caught up and finally found this. Steve portrays a ruthless stalking revenge killer contradicting his signature onscreen cool persona so its somewhat unique. He portrays a naive 18 year old at age 35 – avenging the brutal murder of his native American Indian mother & caucasian father and it just seems a bit off key. It is described by many as a “classic western” rather long but…

The brutality in the beginning is only suggested yet it hits hard. It gives reason for revenge. The story has slow momentum. At the midway point in the Louisiana swamps, things start getting more interesting. Revenge takes time. I didn’t quite believe 35-year-old McQueen as a teenage kid. He manages to portray growing up.

Jonas Cord: “You’re hunting 3 men who steal, because they’re too damn lazy to work. They kill because they love to, & they hide out like rats in the garbage” Way back when, in high-school, I was a big Harrold Robbins fan, & read several of his steamy books. The character of Nevada Smith was the right hand man of Jonas Cord who was an aviation manufacturer. This movie places that character in a prequel. Its been years since seeing this, and…

A decent revenge Western and my first Steve McQueen film. Is it normal that he’s being casted as a half-Indian teenager despite being the most 35 year old white man of all time? Aside from that, it’s also just too long, but I had to add half a star since I was able to point at the screen at some California shooting locations

It’s got some interesting threads of a philosophical revenge story. Unfortunately, I never got over 36-year old Steve McQueen playing a little innocent boy who has to grow up when his parents are murdered.

Meandering, anecdotal prequel to the previous year’s The Carpetbaggers starring Steve McQueen as the title character first portrayed as an older man by Alan Ladd, aka Max Sand, as he seeks revenge on the three men who killed his father and Native American mother over a number of years. It never rises to the level of very dramatic though a few of the incidents are well drawn, and certainly beautifully shot in wide-screen Panavision, but between McQueen’s stoic yet slack-jawed…

I was writing a much longer review but the Letterboxd app shit the bed while I was in the middle of it, so fuck it… – Great McQueen Western that works beautifully as both prequel to the character from 1964’s The Carpetbaggers and as a standalone film… – McQueen great, Brian Keith great. Martin Landau, Arthur Kennedy, and Karl Malden also great and different foils to the main character’s revenge with Landau being more sociopathic, Kennedy being more sympathetic, and…

Relatively dark and bleak…moreso than my expectationsm. It was also a bit of a slog. This goes on for too long, a lot of the Native American casting is way off the mark and sometimes it’s hard to root for the wronged guy who is seeking revenge. He causes a lot of mayhem in his pursuit though most of his resolution is satisfying. The last few minutes of the film seem like studio notes….ehh, you’ll see, or you won’t! I like a lot of Steve McQueen’s flicks but this is a lesser one.

Not McQueens worst or best movie, it was alright

Incredibly drawn out, meandering revenge western that could have benefited from about 40 minutes being cut from the film. McQueen zigzagging back and forth across the country looking for his parents killers, would have been a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ at 90 minutes.

While there is a great cast here and Hathaway directs capably, I’m afraid I have to agree with other reviewers about the length and the character inconsistencies. The 3 villains are really good with a welcome against casting of Malden. Margolin and Pleshette are suitably hot. The story itself is very good and the production is top notch also. Worth a watch.

Nice to see an actually successful Steve McQueen prison break for once.
-
A
A ‘boy’ out to avenge his murdered parents but McQueen ain’t no child and his efforts to sound like a young ‘un are hokey. The journey to vengeance has some good plotting, like being arrested so you land up in a swamp jail that nobody ever escaped from. The scenery is sweet, the directing kinda average.

As if gambling with Steve McQueen wasn’t intense enough in “The Cincinnati Kid”. Well, it was certainly a gamble to make a prequel nobody asked for to “The Carpetbaggers”, but I at least think the returns are rewarding. Even then, it’s still essentially a sensationalistic soap opera with too many characters and twists. There’s also so little subtlety that this ultimately cops to Christian redemption themes with the suggestion that a grown-ass man in 19th century rural America had never…

This is a prequel to the movie The Carpetbaggers, which I watched a few days ago. In that movie, Nevada Smith was played by Alan Ladd. In this movie he’s played by Steve McQueen. First off, Nevada Smith is supposed to be 16 years old in the beginning of this movie. And he’s played not by a kid actor, but by 35 year old Steve McQueen who’s clearly a MAN and not 16 years old. Oh, and he’s supposed to…

I love Steve McQueen, but he’s miscast in this role of a revenge-seeking teenager who grows into a man as dangerous as the ones he’s hunting. Not only is his 36-year-old self unconvincing as a teen (did they learn nothing from The Blob?), but he plays the character the same at the end of the movie as he did at the beginning. Any change in him is only observed by other characters in their dialogue. The movie’s also episodic as…

Havent finished it so far. Up to the prison work camp. Saw the first hour on itv4. Saw the next section on itvx. Watched it for joanna Moore . She has one scene which she nails. Loni Anderson is in it to. .I didnt spot her. Steve McQueen is miscast as a half indian callow youth. The lady who plays the Kiora girl ( Janet Margolin ) is similarly miscast. A revenge western. Also Martin Landau and Brian Keith as a Yodo type. Henry Hathaway directed better pictures (eg the desert fox ).. I have no real desire to resume watching.

Nachdem brutale Revolverhelden (u.A. Solide…

Nevada Smith had a decent story to it which held my attention for the duration of the film, and there were an assortment of characters that ranged from relatable to those you don’t like throughout the film which made the story interesting as well. And there were some characters which could have had a little more screen time such as the ones played by Keith and Pleshette as I felt that they were interesting and added to the development to…

Really good until the last couple of minutes and than you can’t help but ask yourself what was the point? Steve McQueen is on the hunt for the the three men who murdered his Father & Mother. Starting out with no skills but determination and pure grit, he learns how to shoot and use a Knife. He even goes as far to rob a bank just to be thrown in prison where one of the killers is. McQueen (The King OF Cool) is brilliant as always, just felt this needed a stronger Director- like a Leone, Peckinpah, Siegel etc to stick the landing!

-
C
Steve McQueen is badly miscast, starting off as a half Indian teenager seeking revenge on the killers of his family. He mugs his way through the first part of the film being as out of place in a western as he can be. The film has little plot other than getting his revenge and meeting some colorful characters along the way. Karl Malden has a great time chewing the scenery at the end.

Steve McQueen wasn’t the best actor to ever live, far from it. I think he was quite average, but there was this quality about him, this coolness and this naturality that he had to play the anti-hero that I don’t think many had. And for roles such as Max Sand, Tom Horn, or even Papillon, they seemed to have fit like glove. He played the uneducated, force of nature kind of guy like no one else could, and in a…

Everyone talking to Max as if he isn’t a full grown adult. Sound design is pretty great, the pistols sound like cannons. After the scene where Nevada sees Jesus on the cross and says it looks worse than hanging, I realized he’s in the Christ pose on the poster. I’d never heard of this movie, got it for a dollar at the library, but I really enjoyed it. So many things about it were done more interestingly than I expected. As they went through the trio I thought they messed up eliminating Landau so early but Fitch ends up being a great final villain.

My love life is pretty similar to Mcqueens in this film,it goes nowhere but you have a hell of alot of fun with it. Despite the fact that i consider myself a Steve Mcqueen fan i didn’t think i’d like this movie this much but after me and my father sat down to watch it this afternoon i honestly rank it right along The Magnificent Seven. I like in how many different directions the story takes us, each revenge shows a completely different setting. It’s your usual coming of age story, with a 36yo Steve McQueen playing a Native American… With heavy suspension of disbelief casting wise, it’s compelling

I’ve admired Steve McQueen in her brilliant performances in Papillon, The Great Escape and Le Mans. Bullitt is stellar and The Thomas Crown Affair as a ladies man and thief.

My dad took me to see this when it was first released in 1966. First time I’ve seen it since. It’s clearly set in a man’s world but it’s a great Western with an unpredictable narrative.

A classic revenge western but without the payoff. I did a lot of forgiving whilst watching this due to the amount of glaring issues then ironically it was the main character who practically forgives the man he’s been changing for the entire runtime. Really frustrating. I will say I enjoyed the score, apart from that I feel like I wasted my time.

I enjoyed this more the second time around. It still suffers from a few big problems, but McQueen is very compelling and it delivers all the beats of a great western. The ending worked better for me this viewing, but it still feels both unearned and underdeveloped, and then it’s just over. Overall the script needed more character development, more of the “war in his soul” to pull off the finale. But great scenery and, again, McQueen.

Straddles the line between classic 40s-50s style western and brutal late 60s-70s stuff nicely. Nevada Smith a really stupid name for such an expansive revenge epic.

A fairly good revenge story with the appearance of the westerns of the late 50s but touches of the brutality (and sexual frankness) to come. McQueen pretending to be a teenager strains credulity beyond the breaking point, but the breadth of the story is quite something. The depth may not be quite enough for me to rate this among the classics.

Considering the amount of great actors in this Western revenge it is for me a big disappointment . Steve McQueen plays a “kid” who is half Indian and even his great acting doesn’t disguise the fact that he is neither. The plot lumbers on and asks a great deal of its audience to stay with it as it goes from one contrivance to another. Its hard to ignore the amount of innocent people who are hurt or die as a result…

Absolutely hated this movie. Steve McQueen spends the whole movie improving himself and learn skills to better seek revenge on the gang that murdered his parents. It’s okay till the end where after final catching and shooting the last member of the gang he decides he’s better than revenge and doesn’t kill him. But that decision is incredibly hollow since the guy is clearly gonna die because he’s alone in a river with multiple gun shot wounds.

McQueen out for revenge! After his mother and father get murdered McQueen goes on a cross country trip to find the three killers. Classic western with a McQueen not fully formed as the minimalist actor. Although he had roles as the Cooler King in The Great Escape and Cincinnati Kid showing where his acting acting style was leading up to, in Nevada Smith he is clearly making studio concessions concerning his acting. And the classic acting doesn’t really suits him,…

The most effective parts of this movie for me are the very beginning and the last act; specifically the gold mine heist all the way to the end. It is weirdly easier to buy Steve McQueen as a teenager than a half-native. I found it quite exciting to see both Martin Landau and Karl Malden as the nasty heels. Martin Landau is especially someone I’ve always found a bit repulsive so to see him as a bad guy was refreshing. And Karl Malden is always great but I don’t think he gets to be the bad guy that often. I was also surprised that the actress that played…

Solid Steve McQueen revenge flick that also encompasses some other subgenres. Pretty solid film from Henry Hathaway and well shot, although a tiny bit slow at times. Not an issue though, I was more than intrigued by Steve McQueen in this movie. He actually plays an interesting character that is much younger than he was, but I guess it sort of works. Well acted in general, and I actually really dug Brian Keith a bit in this one as McQueen’s gunsmith mentor. Overall I really liked the picture and it had some awesome stunts and action too.

Steve McQueen is great in this, he’s undeniably cool and undeniably McQueen. The thorn in your side for the entire movie is the casting of blonde, 36 year old McQueen as a naive teenage boy that is supposed to be noticeably half-indian to everyone that sees him. 1. Steve McQueen shines as a young man seeking revenge: The movie follows Max Sand whose parents are brutally killed by three outlaws.

A Hidden Gem Western Classic. Acting is solid with really the only issue is McQueen at the start acting like a little boy which feels so out of place and a bit weird because he’s clearly not. But besides that once he gets out of that whiny phase he does his typical thing and is great in this. The villians are good to to boot. Keith is really good and the best thing. I wish he was in this more…

My first Steve McQueen film and an impressive intro. This revenge western has a lot of grit and soul. McQueen is excellent, portraying a man hardened by loss. It’s slower than some modern viewers may expect, but still a great character-driven piece.

While this western offers an unconventional twist with a Papillon-style middle act, it suffers heavily from miscasting, overacting and laughable characters and action sequences. Maybe still worth watching for its breathtaking locations.

I was hankerin’ for a Western, so I revisited this McQueen vehicle. I was hoping to like it a bit better this time, but it stubbornly refused to improve. It’s not bad; it just starts getting a bit muddled in the last third or so. A great cast, but the road movie structure and a rather simplistic script means only McQueen gets enough screen time and good material to make a strong impression. Brian Keith stands out; in fact, when…

2025 Chronological Rewatching of my Favourite Westerns Number 11 of 60. With reluctance dropping this down to 3.5 stars, on a second watching the lukewarm middle of this film dragged it down. Karl Malden is great again here as he is in One Eyed Jacks, however his character accepting Max Sand into his gang despite being wary is nearly as comical as Steve McQueen trying to pass as a teenager. Up next: 1966’s The Professionals

Nevada Smith is a classic Western tale of revenge and redemption. Steve McQueen portrays Max Sand, a young man on a mission of vengeance after his parents are brutally murdered. McQueen brings a rugged charm and intensity to the role, carrying the film through its unfolding journey. The plot offers a mix of action and character-driven moments. While the pacing drags at times, the journey remains engaging and holds your attention. A good film for fans of revenge-driven Westerns.

There is some real uniqueness about this western which stars Steve McQueen as the titular character. After his parents are brutally murdered, Smith goes on a lingering and persistent quest to hunt down and kill the three outlaws that did it. So the movie plays as half western and half revenge thriller. Another interesting thing about this flick is that McQueen’s character is so one-minded about what he’s doing and so brutal about it, that he is hard to fully…

MannVanuary 4 Henry Hathaway A prequel to the successful film, The Carpetbaggers, which in turn was based on the successful book by Harold Robbins, Nevada Smith expands on the background of one of that story’s characters and creates an epic revenge western that stands on its own as a result. A revenge quest that gets right to it, but then just keeps going and going. Disjointed, increasingly flagging storytelling means I can’t fully join the ‘unsung’ camp on this one Miscast, 35-year-old Steve McQueen starts the film playing a child Indian ‘half-breed’ who looks the same age as his mother, and yet, his commitment to the part and the choices he makes in trying to make that work is both admirable and engaging. Entertaining, revenge western, with a young Steve Mcqueen, showing his star power.

A
An impressive Count Of Monte Cristo revenge tale that only tells half of the Max Sand Story. It is actually a character background chapter in the Harold Robbins novel, The Carpetbaggers. The conclusion to it in the book has Sand become a Hollywood actor who ended up in a western playing himself carrying out the revenge attacks he ended up doing in this film. The whole Hollywood arc is unused in the Western though.

Steve McQueen being cast as “young” always makes me laugh. Dude looked 40 his entire life. And he’s supposed to be half native? Ok… He plays a dumb kid pretty well though. He’s too dumb most of the time 🤣 Woof this was long. Like three movies strung together. Won’t need to revisit this one.

Unnecessarily epic-length but standard revenge tale that suffers from a woefully miscast Steve McQueen as a sixteen year old neophyte gunfighter. Otherwise great cast is wasted.

The middle of the story went on some directions that dragged but the 1st and last half are solid. Pretty good film.

Given the film’s length, Nevada Smith is intended as a saga of vengeance, but unfortunately it’s little more than a succession of encounters and scenes, most of which are loosely linked. Opposite the three men wanted by Nevada Smith, we find three women, Neesa, Jesse Coe’s wife and Pilar. These three women are prostitutes, but they play three different roles in Nevada’s life: Neesa takes on the maternal role of caring for him among the Kiowa tribe, Coe’s wife symbolizes the good-hearted whore who won’t turn him in, and Pilar is, for a very brief time, the hero’s lover. Already forgotten.

Serious undercover gem, a surprising amount of character building in each act. A series of standalone parts that come together well.

1966 – Henry Hathaway 8/10 Slightly atypical Western where more development is allowed to the characters. McQueen’s transition to movies from TV is a very naturalistic, and his easy with the genre is heightened by participating in many of the stunts. A lot of secondary characters are given more than the usual one liners, and gives a deeper feel to the storytelling.

Good revenge story
-
E
I do admire this as a revenge narrative and it’s very pretty, but it’s definitely more fun to think of this as a very silly film with 36yo Steve McQueen playing a child (how old is he meant to be?) by doing some literal baby acting some of the time. I also think that it’s objectively hilarious to have Karl Malden theatrically shouting “yor yella” and “finish meeeeee” or whatever it is for the last two minutes of the film.…

16mm print with Japanese subtitles in a tiny independent cinema in Osaka. The movie could’ve been terrible and it still would’ve been an awesome experience. A simple revenge western, but we had to refrain from laughing every time Steve McQueen was referred to as “just a kid” when he looks older than his mother.

Steve McQueen, Suzanne Pleshette, Martin Landau… so many awesome folks in this movie I really enjoyed it! It’s an exciting western revenge film, with some creative story turns. Steve is very good and sympathetic. If you want a western adventure for a weekend matinee that (while being a revenge story after the murder of someone’s parents) isn’t too much of a downer, check this baby out.

Even, if the cooler is a little too old for the part, he nailed it. How could it be otherwise? What a cast, McQueen, Landeau, Malden, Kennedy, Pleshette under Hathaway directing for a not so “simple revenge story”, it’s more than that.

Some incredible plot twists and a gorgeous movie, with some sharp acting… but also way too much forced whiteness. Even for 1965.

Once you get over the fact that Steve McQueen was 36, trying to play 16-21 but once you get over that this one is a real banger! Steve is great despite him being obviously miscast and I so surprised by how beautiful this movie is until I looked it up and Lucien Ballard did the cinematography so it really shouldn’t have surprised me at all
-
B
McQueen gives more than he usually does but he is miscast. He looks to be about 15 years too old and let’s not even discussing his alleged native American heritage. With that said it’s hard for a western fan not to love this familiar western thanks to a strong cast and workman-like filmmaking. I always turned this off when I started it on tv over the years. I’m glad to have watched the whole thing.

It ain’t that easy, kid. Findin’ em’s one thing. Killin’ em’s another.

DVD. Western. A young half-breed goes in search of the three men who tortured and murdered his parents. Given the film’s length, Nevada Smith is intended as a saga of vengeance, but unfortunately it’s little more than a succession of encounters and scenes, most of which are loosely linked. Except for the pacing — and the extreme suspension of disbelief that Steve McQueen is a) half Native American and b) in his twenties, this is one of my favorite revenge Westerns. Ok, the pros of this film are the beautiful locations, solid supporting performances, the simple yet always reliable revenge story formula, all resulting in an incredibly standard Western. The character development was satisfying, and the use of real locations and animals really can’t be beaten. The cons are… 1) the runtime and pacing, it really drags on 2) the major miscasting of Steve McQueen – though he’s especially great later in the film, you know it’s not a good start…

You need a strong suspension of disbelief to buy Steve McQueen first as half native American, and second as a young man, supposedly still in his teens or early 20s. Did he ever look young in any movie? Otherwise, it’s a pretty enjoyable revenge film, that muses over the price paid for taking that path, with the lead character going through a bumpy journey of the soul which represents a satisfying arc. Great cast.

This is closer to a Western Epic than what I was led to believe. a 130 minute-long meticulous revenge film, conducted as a journeymans fervour across the great american plains. considers all aspects of Western Myth Life as routine of the violence it was, but this showcases it as sprawling, breathing vistas upon which any man can be taken under its wing and become crucial to its story. Long, slow, methodical considerations of embedding yourself within prison populations, gambling men,…

Classic western tale of revenge. My favorite film Steve McQueen with Steve McQueen in a lead role. An epic tale that plays out over several years and hundreds of miles. This movie felt like a real journey of revenge. When I first saw the runtime I was a little skeptical because most westerns run about 90 minutes or less. There are of course exceptions to this but this being one I’d never really heard of I was afraid it was going to feel bloated. It didn’t, it has a decent pace that keeps the story moving. There were highs and lows but on the whole it’s always quite fun to see a large amount of films of the same genre close together. It becomes a bit f a film festival of its own. Westerns are perfect for Valentine’s Day. You watch these people ritualistically circling for ages, eyes only for each other, guns lovingly cocked, dicks out, and then BANG BANG BANG… there goes half the neighbourhood. The problem with this one, though, is that Steve McQueen’s character’s supposed to be a boy – fifteen or so, perhaps younger – and he’s thirty-six at the time and no Dustin Hoffman. His attempt at playing this boy is to make him look like a half-wit. Took me right out of an otherwise decent western.
