“An Indian sheriff? The only ones elected in this country are Americans.” Corbucci had obviously hit his stride with Django, because this is some damn fine spaghetti cinema. Navajo Joe is exactly as violent and unforgiving as we expect Sergio’s westerns to be, spinning a gripping yarn of frontier carnage and revenge against the worst kind of evildoers. The film also gains significant bonus points for its sympathetic depiction of Native Americans, and the bold decision to make one of them our hero – granted, Burt Reynolds is about as “Indian” as I am, but he’s still an extremely watchable lead, and handles the physical action very capably. One of Corbucci’s best.

Junesploitation 2025 Day 20: EXPLOITATION AUTEURS! Burt Reynolds really throws himself into the role of Joe, literally. Throwing himself around like a crazy man, climbing up structures and sliding down cliff faces! You can’t help but be impressed with the physicality he shows throughout this spaghetti western. After Clint Eastwood praised his experience working with an Italian director named Sergio,” I can only assume that Rick Dalton declined the role, which led Burt to sign on for *Navajo Joe*. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t Sergio Leone directing; it was the “other” Sergio. By the time he realized this, it was too late for him to back out, leaving him to endure what he would later describe as the “worst professional…

Inside the first half hour of Sergio Corbucci’s Navajo Joe, we’re treated to: scalping, the use of bows and arrows, and what American westerns have trained us to hear as the war whoops of Native Americans. The twist, however, is that all of these things are either wielded by white people, or in service of their causes. From the start, then, Corbucci makes his position clear: the hypocrisy of an American west that vilifies indigineous people even as it uses them and appropriates their culture is on full display. The film foregrounds two mixed race characters. The first, Navajo Joe (Burt Reynolds, who long claimed to have Cherokee ancestry but never offered any evidence of it), is a man who…

Sergio Corbucci, hereby known as the second best Western director in Italy, delivers another thoroughly entertaining film! The film is notable mainly for the fact that the central hero is a Red Indian, which hasn’t been done in too many other Spaghetti Westerns. The plot is a basic revenge tale and focuses on the titular hero as he sets out for revenge against the gang that killed his woman. The plot is made good mainly thanks to a freewheeling nature and a variety of side characters; most of which are simple but well defined. Burt Reynolds takes the starring role and he’s in great shape, though not exactly convincing as an Indian! His heritage is entwined within the plot, culminating…

Sergio Corbucci‘s “Navajo Joe” is an enticingly chaotic and attractively messy start to the peak era of the Spaghetti Western. It’s a dish of a film — cooked up from the scraps of misconceptions. Star Burt Reynolds signed on because he believed the project would be directed by Sergio Leone… only finding out later that he got “the wrong Sergio.” Corbucci thought that he was going to helm the project with Marlon Brando in the lead. What resulted… is maybe most hilariously put into context by Reynolds himself, who said “Joe” was: “….so awful, it was shown only in prisons and airplanes because nobody could leave. I killed 10,000 guys, wore a Japanese slingshot and a fright wig.” Maybe a…

The opening Silhouette of Doom scene is absolute fire and some of the finest macaroni mayhem there is—tense, violent, and wonderfully soundwaved by Morricone’s colossal score. As for the rest of this spaghetti revenge dish, it’s pure Corbucci—extra violent revenge with plenty of marinara to spare… not a masterpiece per say… it’s no Django, The Great Silence, or Compañeros but it’s a fine addition to the bloodshed filled filmography of ‘the other Sergio’. Burt Reynolds handles the physicality of his performance extremely well… tossing himself all over the place like a madman and he kills a ton of people in the process… It’s lurid linguini and I love it.

Action! – Spaghetti alla Sergio: Il West violentemente divertente di Corbucci Given his track record, it should come as no surprise that Corbucci frequently recycles the same formulas and templates from his earlier films with minor adjustments. And in many ways, this film could be seen as a remake of “Django,” except that instead of a white man, we have a Native American (apparently Reynolds’ has some Cherokee’s roots by his dad’s lineage) who seeks revenge against a particular man who, as we will later learn, has taken something important from him. Another of the driving forces behind our hero’s decision to defend an entire town from the terror of ruthless bandits is his budding relationship with the town’s most…

“Navajo Joe” is a 1966 Spaghetti Western featured directed by Sergio Corbucci. Starring a younger Burt Reynolds in the central role, Joe takes on a group of train robbers and illegal scalp hunters with no remorse whatsoever. This all comes about as a town seeks his aid from the group of bandits, but not before the townsfolk themselves have to get over their preconceived bigotries to work with a Native American. It is with this theme that the film holds closely, as Joe aid challenges the element that many of the townsfolk seek to avoid in their established prejudices but quite frankly Joe is the only one who can save them at the same time. An interesting film on the…

It’s amazing how the Indian squaw in the opening scene is dressed exactly how drunk sorority sisters on frat row dress on Halloween. Ok maybe there’s a bit more skin coverage, but it’s still so interesting to see how Italians saw Native Americans in 1966. Had to be entirely based on cheesy cowboy movies they watched in the 40s and 50s right? Nevertheless, this one comes charging out the gates with a banger score and a hardcore reverse scalping to open the proceedings. Yeah this is Dino De Laurentiis approved alright. It also has positively gorgeous scenery and rip snorting color pops. I love how color film in this era looked. Honestly, I would just watch it for that alone.…

Easily this is a film full of issues with white people in too much bronzer portraying native Americans and also some poorly shot scenes with it’s standard ill use of dubbing but I must say I had fun with this Corbucci film. Plain and simple this is a revenge flick but it also takes on a smart cultural critique on the standard western having Navajo Joe(Burt Reynolds(Eeesh)) take on a gang making money for scalping “Indians” regardless of age or gender in which finally is realized by the people as being a heinous act(remind you of anything currant?) calling for there arrest but the town can’t handle it so they ask for the help of Navajo Joe. Sergio Corbucci’s legacy has been genuinely enhanced by the various modern directors who’ve been both influenced and inspired by him. Tarantino’s glowing references to him in both film and literature introduced him to new generations of film fans looking to expand their horizons by exploring deeper into the Spaghetti Western subgenre. Most have seen Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns, but Corbucci’s, with the possible exception of Django, aren’t quite as well known outside of the real Western fans. Even as a huge Western fan, almost all of these Spaghetti Westerns are new to me, I’m learning as I go, and I’m experiencing plenty of interesting films, but why did Corbucci call his films Zapata Westerns? What an opening! Brutal, tragic and accompanied by Ennio Morricone’s incredible score it’s also kinda epic. From that point, the film never loses momentum. It moves at a steady pace and throws in a spectacular train robbery along the way. I also love the ambiguous ending. This is definitely one film I’ll revisit, will probably end up buying it on disc. That said, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that Burt Reynolds playing a Native American throughout the entire film…

Burt Reynolds wears a black wig and bronzer as the last survivor of a brutal massacre. It’s pretty damn distracting, but if you can look past the brownface, Burt is still a star, his charisma shining through. The guy just had it. Throw in Morricone’s score, which you’ll recognize immediately, as well as some really vicious violence, and I liked this lean, mean revenge tale a lot. Burt thought this was one of his worst movies, probably because he had such a bad time making it. But still, his taste was lousy right?

The story behind the movie is the stuff of legend. Burt Reynolds signed on because he thought he was getting Leone, not Corbucci. By the time he realized his director was “the wrong Sergio”, it was too late and he was commited. Reportedly, Reynolds and Corbucci butted heads so much that the director drove his star out into the Spanish desert and left him there. Reynolds would then spend the rest of his life absolutely trashing the movie. It may…

Like any spaghetti Western, this movie juggles a lot of good aspects and bad aspects. There’s an intriguing duplicitous doctor scheming with the antagonists (good), but he’s killed off halfway through (bad). There’s a fairly cathartic and tragic ending (good), but it’s delivered after seeing a lot of white people in brown face (bad). And there’s the usual above-par character work (good) with the below-par editing and cheesy acting (bad).

Burt Reynolds stars as a Navajo Joe, a Native American badass on a mission for business, honor and revenge. This spaghetti western is surprisingly modern in it’s perspective for 1966. I love the gritty, violent and vicious feel, combined with a straight ahead plot and somewhat conventional characters. In a Hollywood western, these ingredients would lead to predictability and cliche. But from a veteran Italian director with a low-budget this movie becomes a one-of-a-kind piece of invention. I hope to revisit it soon as a better transfer and in it’s original aspect ratio.

Directed by Sergio Corbucci, Navajo Joe (1966) is a solid, highly entertaining spaghetti western that gracefully overcomes its narrative flaws through sheer visual style and a legendary soundtrack. While the film has a standard revenge plot and suffers from a lack of deeply fleshed-out characters, its fluid pacing and dynamic direction ensure it never stalls. Corbucci fully embraces an “over-the-top” filmmaking style, delivering a fun B-movie experience that Quentin Tarantino openly idolizes. The film subverts classic western tropes by casting…

Would be lying if I said I didn’t let out a little “oomph” when Burt first shows up in full red face*, but the film makes up for it by making him an absolute badass who rips through a pack of sadistic scalp hunters with both his Winchester rifle, which he has essentially turned into an automatic, and his bowie knife that he uses when literally pouncing on motherfuckers. Interesting concept, settler townsfolk who previously employed a gang of thugs to ethnically cleanse the area by killing and scalping natives now need one of the few natives left to protect them from said gang, but it never really gets it’s teeth into that core hypocrisy enough for me. Good surface level fun, nothing more. Any western setpiece involving a train and an Ennio Morricone score will never fail to stir something within me.

Corbucci might have been the wrong Sergio, but he certainly put his mark on the Italian Western as a man who made incredibly violent movies. Aldo Sambrell plays a villain completely without mercy and Burt Reynolds is the only one who can stop him. It’s easy to see how Navajo Joe tried to capitalize on the success of A Fistful of Dollars, because the plot is quite similar. This Joe is just a bit more Indian. Ennio Morricone’s score is the best thing about this movie, and some of the crescendos deserve to be utilized in a better way. Thankfully, Tarantino made sure they were.

Burt Reynolds play the titular Joe, who is (half) Navajo. Burt Reynolds is not (half) Navajo. Lots of people die, but the violence isn’t as graphic (except for the end) as other films on the list. The film lacks much character development, and unlike other spaghetti westerns, there isn’t a aura of mystery around the main character.

Your enjoyment of “Navajo Joe” will likely hedge on whether or not you buy a young Burt Reynolds (wearing a terrible wig) as a Navajo Native American. I personally struggled mightily with that assignment simply because Reynolds’ grinning, southern good old boy persona is so deeply ingrained with the actor that it’s virtually impossible to separate that from this character. Not sure if this holds up but given that Spaghetti western, at least the early ones, for the most part sidestepped native American themes, the Burt Lancaster character to me feels like an attempt to create an Italian version of Winnetou. Certainly a much tougher and sexier version, yet the rather clean-cut pretty boy looks and especially the otherworldy air do fit. Anyway, compared to other Corbucci westerns this does lack a certain eccentric edge, yet it does feature a number of beautiful saloon scenes and a wonderful role for Nicoletta Machiavelli.

There are too many westerns in this world that drag on with slow, soap-opera-like dialogue. Then there are those westerns that represent exactly what little boys’ gunfights are all about. There’s action and chaos, and things move forward like in a comic strip. No tired Dino and Ricky Nelson singing interludes. Navajo Joe kicks off with a fiercely restless and hard-hitting approach.
