A much easier movie to root for than it is to enjoy, Potsy Ponciroli’s striking but silly “Motor City” strips grindhouse revenge thrillers down to their studs with a dialogue-free wad of pulp fiction in which big muscles, broad tropes, and a badly implemented soundtrack of overused bangers do all of the talking. Panciroli is a well-meaning throwback artist whose debut feature — the 2021 Tim Blake Nelson western “Old Henry” — was inexplicably atop the Netflix charts last week. Though he takes obvious pleasure in distilling another genre to its most basic essence, the purity of his intentions is muddled by the unrefined clumsiness of his filmmaking. By a setting so blandly digital that a movie called “Motor City”…

2026 Ranked Honestly, turn your brain off and enjoy the vibes. If you dig loud rock music, cool cars, and massive guys punching things in slow motion, it’s a blast. The whole zero-dialogue gimmick is pretty neat, but it does get a little old by the end. Please give me a follow 🙂 – http://www.facebook.com/txfilmfanatic/

pure cinema of gestures, mimic, movements, music. it’s all cliche, it’s all genre, it’s all simplicity. not as smart, versatile and eclectic as Forzani/Cattet but goes equally hard. cinema macho masculino, picture perfect for sexy venezia and the sunny mostra.

🚨‼️SPOILERS BELOW‼️🚨 This one took me by surprise. Went into it knowing almost nothing. The near-total lack of dialogue was alarming and unwelcome from like, minute 10 to minute 35, but then I locked in and surrendered to the filmmaker’s choice. Cinematography and music were pretty incredible. Very fun cast. Some really memorable moments of action and drama, particularly a couple of the slow motion bits. And the ending was very surprising. Reminded me of “Only God Forgives”, which I recall hating but wanting to like. This was more my vibe. But super hard for me to love without the use of dialogue.

The central gimmick of the movie — that it has no dialogue — took me completely by surprise. And once it fully sank in that they were really committing to the silent movie treatment for the entire runtime, I figured there was no way they could keep it working for a full 100 minutes. Yeah, I was way wrong about that. Stripping out the dialogue forced the filmmakers to communicate the plot in ways other than exposition dumps — exposition that would have been especially redundant or superfluous here since the story outline was already such a familiar one. The resulting extreme “show don’t tell” approach served to heighten the emotional impact of the film’s big moments; we can see…

The soundtrack was solid, but that’s honestly where my praise for this film ends. The movie has little to no dialogue, and I genuinely don’t understand who thought that was a good idea. It’s 2026, not the 1920s. Instead of feeling like a bold or creative artistic choice, it comes across as a substitute for actually writing compelling characters and dialogue. The silence rarely adds tension or emotion. It mostly makes scenes feel awkward and strangely uncanny. The biggest problem is that I never cared about the characters or the narrative, which is absolutely essential when you’re making a film this dependent on visual storytelling. If you’re going to strip away dialogue, everything else has to work overtime to keep the audience invested. This movie never does. Outside of a decent soundtrack, I was bored for almost the entire runtime. I can’t say I connected with anything it was trying to do, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

why would you frame such a large man? obviously it’s a bad idea thats going to have consequences. why would you choose to frame such a gigantic man. and im not talking about a normal large man, im talking about the largest guy who has ever been produced. look out the window. there are millions of tiny guys scurrying around out there. pick one. point your finger at a guy who blows away like a leaf when the wind hits him. frame a guy who is five foot nothing and afraid of loud noises. frame a guy whose entire personality is apologizing in the doorway of a Panera. there is an endless buffet of frail men out there begging to…
