“Are you saying you have power of attorney for Mothra?” major question: what did the evil land developer intend to do with his giant-egg-themed amusement park once Mothra hatched? narratively and thematically these are already mostly out of gas, succeeding or failing on pure entertainment value. to that end it’s probably smart this is the last one of Shōwa run to feature Godzilla as the villain. although personally i don’t find Mothra terribly exciting as a combatant, i’m endlessly amused by the Shobijin guardian twins, and her creature design is a peak for Toho’s then-state-of-the-art miniature FX. the puppet manages to be far more expressive and dextrous than Godzilla’s suit-mation.

ISHIRO HONDA: I did it! I nailed the perfect balance of humanism, villainy and monster action in a Godzilla film. Now that I’ve succeeded, in a mere three pictures, I’ll be going off to direct other stuff and never have to work on a Godzilla film ever again… THE TOHO MONEY MEN: Uh…About that… Successful from end to end. The humans are endearingly positive, the greedy capitalist baddies meet vicious ends, and the monster action is surprisingly fresh. Ishiro Honda really commits by keeping things moving and touching on all of his passions (Sincerity!) and annoyances (Corrupt Politicians!) He even takes a sidebar to talk about the responsibility of the press in representing the people. Mothra is such a beautifully…

This was my second favorite Godzilla film as a kid. A close second after Ebirah, Horror of the Deep which must’ve accrued hundreds of rewatches and is probably in the running for my most watched movie of all-time, neck and neck with Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and All Dogs Go To Heaven. But we’re not talking Fukuda joints right now. We’re talking Mothra vs. Godzilla. I can’t claim any sort of expertise in the Godzilla franchise, having only logged a pitiful ten or so Godzilla films in my short time on this earth, but I can see why casuals would call this one a series high point. Everything works. The satire is biting but not emotionally distancing, the human story…

We all know it’s just miniatures being stomped by a guy in a rubber suit, but this looks so good, and it’s so entertaining and sincere, that it’s easy to forget that. Tiny twin fairies sing to a giant egg, a moth and two larvae beat a giant killer lizard and somehow it all seems legitimate and dramatic. To laugh at this would be missing the point – the power of creativity, good ideas, good characters and emotional investment that can take a film from ridiculous to great.

Criterion Challenge 2026 #29: Watch a film from any box set release (Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films) Kinda cheating to put this in the challenge considering this was next up for me in the box anyway but I don’t really care. It’s a little slow but the monster fighting is delightfully zany, especially the little Mothra grubs and their endless silly string.

WATANG! NEL FAVOLOSO IMPERO DEI MOSTRI apparte il titolo senza senso e idiota, un po’ come il Godzilla in questo film , è incredibile come contro gli scontri di pupazzoni la trama sia incentrata contro il capitalismo

its definitely an improvement from the og Mothra movie in basically all ways. It does however, seem to have the same issue a lot of these movies seem to have which is the “guest star” kaiju will have a full thematic reason for being part of the movie, with lore and ties to the human characters, but they just kinda crack Godzilla out of whatever box they put him in last movie. I enjoy Mothra a lot but the physical…

A movie made worse by the presence of Godzilla, which feels like a capital sin. I didn’t expect this movie to be as good as the original, nor really GOOD per se, but I was just genuinely disappointed by how sloppy it all felt. I was actually very into it for the first third of the movie, the themes of corporate greed vs respecting nature were very well established and I couldn’t wait for the hubris of the villains to…

God DAMN this shit is badass. I love how the Godzilla franchise branches into big monster fights very early on because I feel like the franchise would be SUPER boring by the 3rd on if they didn’t change the premises.

Criterion Challenge 2021 | 32/52 | any film featured in the Godzilla Boxset That Godzilla Theme hits us so hard as a typhoon blasts Kurata Coast, knocking down power poles and deteriorating land and structures. The following morning, Reporter Ichiro and his photographer, Junko, arrive to capture photos that match the tone of Ichiro’s report. Amimoto, the village leader, arrives to complain about Ichiro’s report, which contradicts Amimoto’s promise to finish development in the region by the target date. Reports…

I love miniatures. Much more singing than I anticipated. My only real concern is that I keep looking at Mothra and then at that egg and I’m just not computing how she could’ve laid that. Must’ve been a TERRIBLE night for her, even with moral support from the tiny women.

Your friendly neighborhood Mothra larvae. Big improvement overall from the last monster fight. No clickbait this time; Ishiro Honda delivered as promised with a great battle between two great beasts, until he threw away the ending. I don’t know if the crew just ran out of budget or something, but that might be the lamest Godzilla defeat I’ve seen yet. You’re telling me two literal newborns just webbed up Godzilla like the Green Goblin, and he’s defeated? I mean, that’s…

Mothra vs. Godzilla shows how much the series had changed in the ten years since Honda’s original. The film is brighter, more colorful, and much more focused on adventure and spectacle, yet still carries a serious core. Godzilla is not yet the lovable icon he would become, but remains a destructive consequence of human actions. The contrast between Godzilla and Mothra works especially well. Godzilla represents the radioactive past, destruction, and nature thrown out of balance. Mothra stands for protection,…

Ishirō Honda, dev kelebek Mothra’yı seriye katarak Godzilla evreninin en iyi filmlerinden birine imza atıyor. Radyasyonla güçlenmiş düşmanının dizginsiz öfkesine karşı umudu temsil eden hasta Mothra, iyi ile kötünün savaşına özel bir hüzün katıyor. GODZILLA: CANAVARLARIN KRALI seçkisi kapsamında, MUBI’de incele.

Return to form for the king, mothra’s first appearance in a Godzilla movie is fantastic and is in perfect contrast to the menace that is godzilla. The human plot is a little corny but fiasco that ensues from human greed is great, overall one of the best in the showa era

This feels like the most solid one since the first movie. Tangible plot and actual stakes on top of getting a bit goofy at times. The effects still are very fun, and now with Mothra being a thing it’s cool to see them play around with puppets in addition to the usual suits

The Egg dude is everything. I love him. A true icon of cinema. Also love the part where the dude raw dogs a mysterious substance of unknown origin that is later found out to be extremely radioactive.

After seeing GODZILLA (1954), this film requires a bit of a shift. This Godzilla does not seem to directly represent the intense suffering and trauma caused by weapons of mass destruction. It also takes some getting used to the fairytale-like appearances (think of the little singing twins). What bothers me is that the shortcomings of capitalism seem to be approached in a rather childish way. The photographer who keeps appearing on screen in a ‘latest fashion’ outfit also strikes me…

I’m obsessed with the little fairies who sing, they are ICONIC. Their song will be stuck in my head for the rest of my life. I feel so maternal toward these monsters. I know Godzilla is destructive but it makes me sad when he gets hurt 🙁

Godzilla’s some big mean sumbitch who wants to have a yummy snack but meanwhile Mothra wants her babies to grow up big and strong, theres an impass and you’re not gonna guess who wins here. It was fun! I really liked watching these two duke it out, standard fare for a Monster Movie of its days. It kicked ass

Wild ride. Up there with the original Godzilla (1954). Mothra and Godzilla are a great headline duo, but Mothra’s tiny fairy spokeswomen steal the show (do yourself a favorite and check out the phenomenal Japanese pop folk duo The Peanuts).
- 剧情简介
- Journalists Ichiro Sakai and Junko cover the wreckage of a typhoon when an enormous egg is found and claimed by greedy entrepreneurs. Mothra's fairies arrive and are aided by the journalists in a plea for its return. As their requests are denied, Godzilla arises near Nagoya and the people of Infant Island must decide if they are willing to answer Japan's own pleas for help.
