100 Whenever I revisit Miami Vice, my love for cinema is rekindled, ignited like a cool-blue flame. It’s so enrapturing, you just want to throw your arms forward and jump head-first into the screen. Michael Mann is a poet of impressions. In the director’s cut, he begins the film with a boat race torn between layers of water and air. Then, a nightclub rooftop illuminated by a magenta sky. And the smear of blood on the asphalt after a suicide on a stretch of highway. These are but a few of Michael Mann’s calculated images given a feverish intensity in the first fifteen minutes – a hyper-real display of life on the edge, with the environment as immediate as the…

The change happen at some point midway through Ali, but video certain bring it upfront: the rich detailed oriented world of Mann’s 80s and 90s films mutate from the high novelistic accumulation of detail to one in which all that research becomes background, a clutch for world that remains always in the verge of dissolve. What matter in late Mann is just the permanence of the romantic/mythic gesture in the middle of such world. Mann remains the most Hawksian filmmaker of his generation, much more than self professed Hawks disciples like Hill or Carpenter, not because of his emphasis in professionalism as a stick to measure its characters so much as because his world is so heavily stylized: much like…

“Fabricated identity and what’s really up collapses into one frame.” Literally the best movie ever made. In which Mann takes this amazing, beautiful thing he helped make/define two decades ago and looks back at it with a sort of matured sense of weariness and despair but also formal rigor that experimentally deglamorizes it. Retaining the doomed romance neon nighttime drive vibes of the original show but updating the specifics from the 1980s cocaine music video era to something closer to Mann’s existential character pieces and hyper-researched milieus of professional criminals and their tools/tactics; especially Heat’s focus on the obsessive, destructive psychology of men like this and Collateral’s foray into urban digital landscape impressionism. Resulting in some technological/geopolitical updates on the…

You’ve all heard this before….*ahem* – Once I had a fortune. It said “leave now, life is short, time is luck.” Anyways, this is like – still the peak of digital photography in movies? NOTHING else looks like this. This is one of the most lyrical, abstract and oblique films to come out of Hollywood. German expressionism gone digital – of course this puzzled many when it first came out, Mann is like a silent filmmaker here – pictures tell us a story before actors do. Moods are denoted by shades of colours in neon. And whole pools, waves of emotions revealed by the near-abstraction in the formations of a cloud. The last time we see Farrell prior to the…

oh my god oh my god i didn’t think i was enjoying the film that much until half way through when colin farrell and gong li are riding on the speedboat, and then i just started crying uncontrollably there’s moments in this that make me feel like i’m hallucinating, like i’m getting sand shoved into my eyes, like i’m in love, like i’m running my hands across the ocean and grasping the contours of the earth, like i’m falling upwards into an endless sky, like all the air has been sucked out of my lungs utterly bewitching

A lot of you probably assume I’m always on the right side of history, but this is not the case. For example: I used to think this movie looked bad and was boring. In my defense, a lot of people didn’t like the impressionist painters when they first saw them. There’s an incredible sense of ache here. Hard to follow exactly what’s happening. Doesn’t matter.

A very good dark crime thriller from Michael Mann. With Miami Vice, the director delivers an incredibly immersive film, elevated by remarkable lighting and cinematography that give it a truly distinctive visual identity. The Colin Farrell / Jamie Foxx duo is excellent, not to mention Gong Li and Naomie Harris, who are both very convincing in their roles. An intense, stylish and thoroughly entertaining crime thriller. a truly strange movie, where something is off the entire time. Its feels like the dream of someone in a coma. there are some very interesting aesthetic choices and a freedom in it that is to be admired, but after listening harmony korine saying miami vice was spring breakers biggest inspiration – it makes sense. but that movie is the logical and heighten conclusion – where the dream is indulged.

Michael Mann has a way of making every scene feel tense. Even during the quiet moments, it feels like something is about to go wrong, and that constant sense of pressure kept me hooked the entire time. Another stylish, atmospheric Michael Mann film that knows how to build tension.

this film is a visual manifestation of how the early 2000 felt…. a beautiful colorful world with so many possibilities and a feeling of true yearning for the future mixxed with a feeling of romantic nostalgia…. but in the background there is a constant feeling of impending doom.. there is dread and a hidden world of violence and saddeness or mourning of the world that couldve been…… i find the movie very dream-like and romantic which i love

Is the butt rock cover of In the Air Tonight awful? Yes. Is the fist bump between Tubbs and Crockett as it peaks the coolest thing ever? Also yes. That pretty much sums up my feelings on Miami Vice. Cool as hell. Prophetic in its formal choices. Incredibly of its time. One of Michael Mann’s highlights, even if, and maybe because, its script is stupid as hell. Also weird that my two favorite Mann pictures end in gorgeous Floridian houses.

Absolutely loved it. The opening scene dropping you straight into the 2006 Miami club scene is brilliant. The cinematography is amazing a usual case for Mann’s movies. As an Irish man I know Farrell is good to play American roles but he really threw me off at first but started to grow to like him. Jamie Foxx was kinda there his character was only really shining when Trudy is on screen. The action pieces were amazing one of my favourites…

I couldn’t tell you what the plot was but the movie looks amazing – vibrant, ominous, electrical. I loved the scenes that took place in the hours before sunrise. The shdes of blues, reflections of water, multi-colored sky lights refracting in the distance. Just really made me nostalgic for a city I’ve never been to, but always have been fascinated by. But cinematography aside, this movie is schizophrenic as fuck. And not like a played-out annoyingly nonlinear Christopher Nolan yawnfest…

On the surface, Miami Vice is basic 2000s buddy cop drama. It is the same story of undercover operation and its risk, while portraying the aftermath where shit usually went wrong. But somehow, in the hand of Michael Mann, a story this simple can turns into something quite magical. There is something exceptional about how Mann shoots his film, where every scene is shot in a documentary style close-up, making every scene feels personal. Some may argue that Collin Ferrel…

Watched this because of the Mann discourse on twitter surrounding Indie Navarette choosing X-Men over heat 2. But to get to the film, this has the materials to be a run of the mill FBI thriller that unearths nothing new to the genre. But Mann is different from the dialogue to the camera work to the sets, different class. Also by far the best Jamie Foxx has ever been.

Plot – 6/10 Vibes – 10/10 Volledig op digitale camera geschoten. Best dik. Shoutou Gong Li.

Cool and sexy as hell. It’s not Mann’s best but still terrific. Farrell’s look and vibe walk such a fine line between badass and goofy but his sincerity nails it. Foxx is effortlessly cool, also. Loved the doomed romance, but I know I’d blow it all up for Gong Li, she’s amazing.

MOJO BOAT. The sky and sea 🔥🔥👌🏼👌🏼 Looks great and in typical Mann fashion has real form/content ingenuity. 20 years in and the digital stuff mostly holds up.

It’s so rare to just be thrown into a movie without any back story, just vibes. Such a breath of fresh air. Great acting too, even for someone as plastered as Colin Farrell was during production. Severely underrated movie.

Idk i want to rate it 4,5 and 3 at the same time. I feel like 4 is too low and too high at the same time. The visuals, sound and everything that has something to do with cinematography is beautiful and innovative. It couldnt convey the atmosphere better. But the story just doesnt hit me. It was kinda boring and predictable. Idk it might just be me.

20 Year Anniversary @ Arkadin – incredibly special would be an understatement. People laughed profusely, people cheered and clapped loudly at the credits and some people also cried a little (only me for sure). Indelible vibes machine, like someone layered digital textures endlessly over each other and then poured Bacardi mojitos all over the files. Created the most beautiful symphony of Michael Mann karaoke – “for me, the style is the substance” Unforgettable experience and film.

Schaubefehl Nr. 14 und @Silas Lambrecht kannst du mir mal bitte erklären, warum du mir Miami Vice nicht früher zeigen konntest ? Was Michael Mann hier inszeniert, ist einfach purer Actiongenuss.

Okay, lets disect this. Nothing really works in the movie, when you obviously have to compare it to the MUCH better series. I didnt fw any of the performances from any actor, but MAYBE JAMIE FOXX or maybe Ciaran Hinds. Colin Farrell doesnt work as Sonny, some characters are just missing and overall this just doesnt work. Really, really good. Mann has such an obsession with men protecting their women and professionals being so fucking good at their jobs. His style is hyper-masculine and absolutely panders to men just oohing and aahing at how cool everything looks. And honestly, I can’t even say it’s undeserved, the man delivers banger after banger. This is one of the more confusingly divisive films I’ve seen. I went in expecting something polarizing, but I can barely even understand the argument that…

I know this movie has benefitted from a massive critical reassessment recently, but, yeah, sorry … I’m just not buying it. Certainly, Miami Vice has vibes that work in its favor. It’s got a gritty, sweaty feel that gives the viewer instant access into its corrupt and distinct world. If the movie works at all, that’s why. (This is no more apparent than in the film’s first and best scene: the sting operation at the nightclub.) But Miami Vice is…

Michael Mann makes movies for men. This one is more of an audio-visual trip than a coherent story. All his movies are just romance films disguised as action thrillers. He’s his own version of french cinema.

Got to see this on a really nice 35mm print, and the mix of a VERY digital movie on film was, at times, disorienting. There’s that great digital noise, in part because it was shot at night, but then sometimes, especially around the ends of each reel, we’d get some nice pops and small scratches, which was fun. I only saw this one once, on a bootleg in China, when a friend was visiting (2008). He got what was labelled…

This movie is a vibe. I have zero complaints, but also this movie doesn’t really have anything that sets it apart as truly great. The gunfire sound effect have a unique booming quality to them, similar to Collateral. Colin Farrell is easily the best part of this.

Night clubbing Miami. ‘Numb / Encore’ by Jay Z & LinkedIn Park rippling through your speakers. Colin Farrell with a majestic 90s mane. Claustrophobic, hand held close-ups for every shot; grit, grime, grunge, in shades baby — Miami Vice is bringing Mood! What an editing menace. The rhythm and intent behind how they stitch together shots is discombobulating. Even when choices with the camera movement (also framerate) feel deliberate and convey unmistakable personality, it’s so hard to invest my full attention…
