look, sometimes things are made specifically for me. like, not everyone is going to enjoy almost three hours of jonathan groff on the precipice of tears while daniel radcliffe sings a patter song and lindsay mendez gives loaded looks to everyone. by the end of this movie, a regular person will be on their hands and knees using an ouiji board to converse with the dead and beg sondheim for a chorus. not me though! i loved it!

Amazing performances. My primary critique is how this filmed version is shot/directed: SO many close-ups, so few wide shots, no curtain call, no intermission, condensing of time, etc. it removes some of the stagy, theatrical trappings that I appreciate in a proshot. Yes, it’s amazing to be able to get closer to the actors’ faces or show different angles than we obviously could as an audience watching it live on stage. I’m not asking for a single camera on a tripod at the back of the auditorium (obviously), but I don’t need a filmed version to try to replicate a movie by hiding the stage; it’s a completely different beast. The filmed stage productions of Waitress and Hamilton are recent examples that do a better…

I actually loved this, also watched it during choir my sophomore year of high school. I might be a hypocrite. I say I hate musicals but here we are. Its just some musicals I cant make myself sit down and watch all the way through. If that makes sense.

one of my favorite musicals and this interpretation just feels so much more unforgiving, mean, and tragic in its comedy and treatment of characters. not to say it’s a bad thing—this story is at its best when the consequences are just so ugly, devastating, and immediately juxtaposed with a hyperactive, playful score that, like time, stops for no one. there’s so much great about this film but it’s ironically at its worst when it’s trying to be a movie. constant…

Meant only to check out the first number or two to get an idea of how this production translates to the screen and accidentally watched the whole thing, which I guess is a tribute to how great it is. The show’s conceit is so inspired and inherently moving that I’m baffled it took this long for it to become a hit, although I guess most Broadway audiences looking to have a good time don’t want to experience the two-and-a-half hour…

I fucking hate musicals. That being said, there were some aspects of this that I enjoyed. Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe were exceptional. Their chemistry and delivery were both on point. I did not enjoy Lindsey Mendez much but I did enjoy Reh Rogers. It was weird seeing knock-off Brian Daboll in this production and my friend and I laughed pretty much every time he was on screen. I am not an expert on technical stage functions but nothing stood…

Watched once again, but this time paying special attention to the ensemble numbers in preparation for callbacks tomorrow (I’ll play Charley one day, just not this time). What a beautiful show. The hopeful (and tragic with the knowledge of what is to come) ending brings me to tears every damn time. Keeping my fingers crossed that I get to play either the guy who says “I wrote the screenplay to Frank’s new film” or the dude who raves about Charley’s Pulitzer.

This has to be studied in every college course on musical theatre globally, for this is a perfect musical. It’s so powerful that I’ll simply be enjoying the scene, totally locked in, then I’ll remember the beginning of the show and just start crying. And what pains me so much is that when they are young, all of them are truly great people. I think one of the most brilliant things about the show is how there isn’t one moment…

My sincerest apologies to those behind the likes of Sunday in the Park with George, Hamilton, Into the Woods, West Side Story, Assassins, Ragtime and Cabaret, for I no longer would argue that your musical is the best I’ve seen. I feel quite comfortable giving that title to Merrily We Roll Along. Thank you I love this show more than my firstborn son (this is subject to change once he’s born)

beautiful! thanks sondheim i love you sondheim! this recording is kind of not great though. questionable cinematography throughout, and slightly strange audio mixing at the beginning. if i’m choosing to watch a proshot of a stage musical, i kind of want it to look like a proshot of a stage musical, not a film with limited angles and one-dimensional blocking… otherwise very beautiful and thought provoking

A very much needed quarter life crisis kind of hopeful and devastatingly real musical. Daniel radcliffe youre a star in every way. Surprisingly stole the show from jonathan groff who i have a raging boner for (what is the opposite of queerbaiting???). Love lindsay but respectfully she was alright. Phenomenal chemistry but kind of forgettable songs with lyrics that are just slightly better other than daniel radcliffes incredible patter song that genuinely took my breath away.
-

so awesome!! I’m gonna throw up Jonathan is so good at Looking. He masterfully combines Having Eyes and Having A Face and brings them together to Look. He expresses feelings that haven’t been discovered yet and sees sights as if sound has color. Can’t believe he invented eyeballs.

youtu.be/Lek6MZzvZEM?si=B44QpiOYyGqka-4S from maria friedman – he (stephen sondheim) was dismayed and heartbroken, often with tears rolling down his face saying “why doesn’t anybody understand, all I do is write love songs?”

Beautiful cinematography but THIS IS NOT A movie please show the whole stage sometimes or more than one thing at a time. Great musical overall 👍

I sound fucking crazy but where the hell is Jonathan Groff’s spit while he’s singing? There are consistent cinematic-style closeups throughout this pro shot and not even a dribble? Did they edit it out? Is Groff singing in a way where he doesn’t spit but did so only for Merrily? This is very important to the theatre kid lore!

i find this movie intriguing, its reverse chronological order shows the ending at the beginning which is sad because you go the whole movie it all works out and they all make up but you saw the ending you know they dont. its cool. lowk overstimulated me at times
-
E
I liked it, but was also frustrated with it. You know those stories that end the way they do to be intellectual and “paint a picture of the real world”? Well this felt like that. And in reality, if you went from point A to point B the way these characters did, I would just feel sad for you.

If I have learned anything from Blue Moon, this movie, and the life of Andrew Lloyd Webber, it’s that people who make musicals together be beefin’.
-
S
I was unfamiliar with the show before watching this version, and it took me some time to invest in the characters who we meet at (generally) their *most* unlikeable. The reverse-chronology works incredibly well here, though. Forward, it’s a simple, often-told story. In reverse, it ends on a beautiful note of hope and love, which drives home the tragedy of the beginning (/ending) all more starkly.
-
T
Critical Score: B- Personal Score: D The performances are good, though I personally can’t stand Groff (never have). The music is meh. The setting isn’t drawn out enough. The plot is incredibly boring and generic. The themes are run-of-the-mill. The backwards narrative isn’t all that interesting here, and it’s kind of the only remotely interesting thing about the whole show. I’m also just so rarely a fan of theatre, and this is very theatre theatre. Corny and self-absorbed. God, I…

I really wish I’d watched this before seeing the hadestown pro shot so that I could give it the 5 stars it as a musical deserves, rather than take half a star off for the countless weird filming choices that were made. my sincerest apologies to merrily. I had no preconceived idea of what this was; but if Jonathan Groff is a flame, I am NOTHING if not a moth. I’d never seen Lindsay Mendez before this and now I’ll be watching everything she’s ever in, ever; and Harry Potter was there, too. No, but Daniel Radcliffe really surprised me. The boy who lived is truly living in this

We gotta be the luckiest people who ever lived Sondheim really never missed with his charming explorations of modern relationships and fame. Feels more personal than some of his other works– Sunday in the Park with George comes to mind! Beautiful performances all around, beautiful score, beautiful set. I do wish it was filmed slightly differently, though; don’t get me wrong, this is a very high quality proshot! …But there’s too many closeups that ignore the larger image, quite literally,…

While I couldn’t really get invested in the story itself, and I’m realizing that Sondheim scores don’t really grab me that much (blasphemy, I know), the performances are good enough and the reverse-chronology premise is cool enough to hold my interest. I’m sure this was great on stage. Too bad, here, several characters seem to be directed for a completely different show. And it all feels disconnected. But Daniel Radcliffe is completely amazing. He can do no wrong.

Extremely blessed I got to see this on Broadway with this cast, the cast is all amazing but Jonathan Groff’s performance and range is what ties the entire thing together. Very glad this was filmed for others to enjoy and not simply in the movie adaptation way which might end up being good but wouldn’t give people a chance to watch the talent and chemistry that this cast shares. That being said I do feel like the direction for film…

I really like this musical! Everyone’s performance was enjoyable and the music is really catchy. I stand by my original statement though, I don’t like this pro shot. The lighting was throwing me off and the random close up I just felt like they were so unnecessary. Other then that though I enjoyed it and the soundtrack will continue to have its rounds around.

One of the best musicals I have ever scene. The chemistry of the actors perfectly sell the story of three old friends over the course of 20 bumpy years. I don’t typically cry at movies/musicals however whenever I decide to rewatch this masterpiece I will always find myself sniffling.
