Not terrible, but releasing this movie while The Favourite is still in theaters is a bit like trying to put out a new Airport sequel two weeks after Airplane!

The great pleasure of historical biopics often lies in their visceral power to remind us that history is always personal for those who make it. From the Middle Ages to our first walk on the Moon — from Jesus of Nazareth to Freddie of Kensington — even the most mythic figures were flesh before they were folklore. Josie Rourke’s “Mary Queen of Scots” is an epic look at the intimate frustrations of two massively powerful young women who spend most of their energy navigating between who they are and what they represent. This isn’t just a movie in which earthly human notions like sacrifice and self-worth shape the course of an empire; it’s a movie about those forces, and how…

the 3rd act (and last shot) REALLY are the reason for this rating i was all set to dismiss it as good but slow and then margot and saoirse acted their DICKS off and the cinematography just started popping off and as soon as saoirse went “YOU MEHRDER YOHR KWEEN” i was milly rocking in the theater side note please stop killing gay characters i’m begging you to just let ONE live til the credits roll this is exhausting

The filmmakers mistakenly believed there was a feminist period piece hysteria that they were playing into that would launch this into massive success, but it was more likely just an overestimation based on their instagram reel algorithms. 40 year old women in HR don’t produce great ROI with budgets in the decamillions

I really enjoyed this movie and how it ALSO focused on Mary’s gay husband and his affairs (which really surprised me), however it annoyed me on all the details it missed: the plots, Mary’s marriage with Phillip and how she got her title of ‘Bloody Mary’. Still a good film though, Margot Robbie did an amazing job playing Elizabeth and so did Saoirse Ronan with Mary.

She went and died on that hill. Shoutout to Mary fr. Spent a good chunk of the movie wondering what in the high hell i was watchin, wondering why she kept riding that horse into oblivion. But, girlie had convictions. What else to die for when you don’t have weapons and “man”power. Her courtladies made sure her legacy lived on. Die proud or live a coward. Sentence highly relative depending on shared beliefs and point of view of the storyteller. Elizabeth spoke right into my disdain for clowns, dang,

Scotland was moggingggg me Interesting take on history here. Really removed all responsibility from these two women which almost seems contradictory to treating them as politicians and leaders

honestly not as boring as I thought it was when I first tried watching it back when it came out, and actually the scenery was very beautiful and the acting was great – I’m just not really sure why this movie exists. but I’m happy it does, if only because it led to the marriage of my close personal friends saoirse ronan and jack lowden

Me gustó? Sí, la recomendaría? No

Saoirse Ronan playing the most Irish human alive who somehow was born in Scotland and grew up in France: “Ah Jaysus, no! Me own feckin’ brother’s schemin’ against me again, so he is” Margot Robbie given literally nothing to do: :applies more white makeup thats a thing Queen Elizabeth did, remember?: Dogshit script hampered even more by a dogshit edit. This sucks.

Just a bad movie, and a waste of two excellent performances. Surprisingly to me, I think Robbie’s is the better one. She is a better actress than I realized. But the plot is just turgid, for lack of a better term, or to put in plain words – it just really bogs down in violence and overwrought speeches and acting from the supporting cast. Jack Lowden is especially bad – not sure they gave him good material to work with, but just a total detestable character.

luscious cinematography, costumes, and color palettes going on. but that final scene between Ronan’s Mary and Robbie’s Elizabeth is ludicrous and really brings the entire film down. one of the main tragedies of their relationship is that they famously never met in real life. also why did they give Margot Robbie the Queen of Hearts wig from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland?

Beautiful take on the story of two women pitted together by Men, all spinning webs around them. The scene where they finally come face to face whilst physically removing the white sheets that distort the space between them was beautifully shot. Along with Elizabeth taking off her wig, she became fully vulnerable in front of Mary and Mary showed her teeth. The final scared breath of a young Mary before she gets beheaded with the credits rolling in silence is…

Mary Queen of Scots is a magnificent movie of the 1500s monarchy power struggles in England and Scotland. It’s one of the rare movies where the press tour — especially the visits of Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie at The Graham Norton Show — was the trigger for me to get interested in this movie. I don’t know or particularly care about how historically accurate it is. I know they made a bunch of artistic choices to make a more…

MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (2018) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 out of 5 stars Disney+ writes, “Upon the death of her husband, 18-year-old Mary returns to reclaim her place on the English throne.” ===== And we’re still as barbaric as we’ we’re then.Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie ❤️ ===== #MaryQueenOfScots #Disney #DisneyPlus #Review #Reviews

vizual olaraq çox zərif idi, xüsusilə kostyumlar, məkanlar və musiqi sanki keçmişi canlandırırdı. Düzü, bəzi tarixi dəyişikliklər olsa da, mənim üçün əsas olan yaratdığı atmosferdir. Tarixi sadəcə öyrənməyi yox, hiss etməyi sevirəm!

I didn’t enjoy this movie, but I did have fun reading the Wikipedia pages of the historical figures involved. Did you know that Mary’s son James was a patron of Shakespeare? And that he’s the James whose name is on the King James translation of the bible? I didn’t, so I can at least say this film was tangentially educational. Oh, but for something actually about the film I liked: the costumes were great! I liked the dresses the two…

This was pretty good. I liked the performances and the costumes and makeup are very well done. It’s a beautiful looking film. It lulls in parts, but there are enough effective moments to make up for it.

I know the movie is called Mary Queen of Scots, but you can’t just have Elizabeth as a background character in this; she is literally part of the main plot. Speaking of which, all of the conspiracies felt detached from each other, and I feel that they should’ve played more heavily on the religious side of the dispute.

the movie was enjoyable aside from the many historical inaccuracies. Loooots of info missing as well, most importantly just how horrible each and every one of her husbands were HORRIBLE (I mean aside from Frances but he died when he was young so ig he gets a pass lol) this poor girl. Mary went thru so much!!! I’d like to think Mary and Elizabeth met IRL so it was nice to see it in this movie. Highly recommend listening to the audiobook or reading the book (it’s also called Mary, queen of Scot’s by John Guy).

Ok so I loved this. It may not reinvent historical dramas from an stylistic point of view, but it doesn’t really need to. With terrific production values taken for granted in a production of these characteristics, the film’s actual strength comes from the performances and the screenplay. When the name Beau Willimon popped up, it all made so much sense. Absolutely love how this is written from a more modern perspective yet for what I’ve briefly researched it doesn’t betray…

An incredible story, especially knowing that it’s largely based on historical events! I found that the two lead actresses were both fantastic in their respective roles. I was deeply moved by the strength, resilience, and acceptance that emanated from these two women, even though they were embodied so differently by the two protagonists of the film. Mary Queen of Scots was a poignant feminist tale, while being strikingly realistic in its portrayal of women’s fate throughout history.

CCarl Patterson 2021
I knew nothing about Mary Stuart and her relationship with Queen Elizabeth I. It was only at the end that I remembered the beginning. It doesn’t end well for Mary Stuart.
- In 1561, Mary Stuart, widow of the King of France, returns to Scotland, reclaims her rightful throne and menaces the future of Queen Elizabeth I as ruler of England, because she has a legitimate claim to the English throne. Betrayals, rebellions, conspiracies and their own life choices imperil both Queens. They experience the bitter cost of power, until their tragic fate is finally fulfilled.
