Coppola’s preceding film, Lost in Translation was one I studied in school. Where it succeeds in grounding loneliness in a foreign excess culture, this film fails. It maintains the extravagance in isolation from the mundane problems of Marie Antoinette. She is never lost in the excess, instead she seems to thrive on it if she may not thrive in her interpersonal relationships. This is the opposite of Lost in Translation, and unfortunately is not at all subversive. Antoinette’s truth (in…

What a fantastic surprise. Idk why i decided to put this on. Maybe because I saw it was getting added to the Criterion Collection idk but I’m glad I did. It was great. I know like nothing actual events so no clue if this is 100% accurate but don’t really care. Kristen Dunst is incredible. Everyone else was great too. The costume design was amazing and so was the production of this. As far as Sofia Coppola films ive seen…

i used think a lot about how 20 years ago this was booed at cannes, but now i know that’s honestly quite fine, because it means the film elicited a reaction. by the french no less. if the film truly was bad they’d fully walk out… and imo, this is not!!

3rd movie of the day on my solo day back from travel. Made Gochujang cookies during and went thru my box of photos. I’ve seen this before I think I liked this better than the first time. And since we just went to Versailles in April that was fun to see. Liked the fresh fun take

-
K
They very humanized her and tried to make her relatable but also was very inaccurate I mean converse it quite literally in one scene however when doing research into her I see how she ended up the way she did I mean married at 14 and then didn’t ‘consumate’ her marriage for another 7 years but I loved the soundtrack 💜

Marie Antoinette is certainly a spectacle, all vast manicured grounds and estates and immaculately detailed 18th Century French attire. There is a literal richness of detail everywhere and if perhaps to excess, well “This is Versailles,” as stated in the film. As young Marie, Kristen Dunst charms in her portrayal of a teenager surrounded by decadence and pleasure, though tasked with birthing an air to the awkward future king (a wonderful Jason Schwartzman). Moments in that luxurious life fill the…

I understand they filmed in the actual Palace of Versailles but spiritually it feels like it was filmed in the MET. and honestly that would have been very on brand for sofia coppola
-
J
Sofia Coppola simply directed this film to new heights. A period piece melodrama is not normally my cup of tea (no pun intended) but the hilarity and modernity of the dialogue between the leads, the real and felt struggle of Dunst amidst her palace that looks like a dreamhouse with the lighting and costuming, and the devastations that are felt was wonderful.
-
C
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, its absolutely gorgeous. The color palette is enchanting and the recreation of Doyen’s painting of Louis XVI’s coronation was jaw dropping. This is also probably the most sympathetic portrayal of Marie Antoinette and Louis (who is particularly lovable in this imo) that you will see anywhere. On the other hand, while some shots are very powerful many feel like more style than substance. Additionally, I’m not sure how to feel about the way that this film seems to depoliticize the lives of the royal couple. The actual reasons for the French Revolution are barely paid lip service.

This movie was interesting to me, especially seeing how the decision that Louis made was like the butterfly effect and we were able to see by the end how badly that decision turned out to be. One thing I loved about this film was the costumes. They were literally the most prettiest costumes I have seen in a film EVER!

Chaos of responses when it came out, but it is gorgeously outrageous in its appearance and appropriately sympathetic to the teenagers who will become king and queen of France. K. Dunst is terrific, as are many of the other actors whose names you will recognize. And yes, it actually was filmed at Versailles.
-
ꪑ
A estética do filme é simplesmente linda!

What we got here is a movie that looks pretty but is very boring. It’s like Barry Lyndon in that way. The pop punk soundtrack threw me off when it would play. But I guess it’s to play into the idea that this version of Marine Antoinette is more of a manic pixie dream girl type

there were moments when i felt the music betrayed the concept. the mix of period accurate music with the modern make the modern feel gimmicky when employed, i would’ve preferred all or nothing. thats not to say i didn’t like it though. i know what its like to drown out your circumstances with any all of the pleasures you can get your hands on, and getting sick on it. a passenger in her own lavish life, somehow you feel for…

Happy to say I’ve finally found a Sofia Coppola movie I like. Not sure if this is historically accurate, but I don’t care, how do we know she didn’t listen to the Strokes? Overall this was very much what I expected for the first 90 minutes, but it became something much more transcendent in the last act, and that ending is an all timer. Rip Torn as the King of France is also fucking hilarious (complimentary). A movie so good it makes me want to revisit Lost In Translation for the fourth time, hoping it will finally be good

worth it for the quintessential genX/millennial music supervision and the beautiful costumes. i mean when the strokes song plays, when joy division plays— it does something to me haha its been 20 years since i saw this and i like it more now than i did then, but only bc i read some marie antoinette trivia and kirsten dunst is kirsten dunst. its sort of like if vibes were a film. the movie doesnt stand on any legs when stripped naked, which stinks bc you know i love SCENES. but i guess thats all period pieces. idk!

Had no real expectations that this movie would blow me away but it truly did. I found every aspect of it enjoyable. The visuals, settings, costumes were phenomenal. I loved the switch from bright, bold, loud visuals and story from the palace and the city to the neutral, calm, quiet story when she “moves” to the country. I reminded it of little women in the way of how it depicted friendships and family and how Marie depended on them to become…

Lavish French royalty with modern music overtop. Didn’t realize how sex focused they were, nor how invoked everyone was with every aspect of her life. It’s a pretty solid movie, but I wish they focused more on the revolution rather than just towards the end. Great costume and smart design! 🏰🇫🇷🎂

People are both a product and a perpetuation of their society, and I think I like Sophia Coppola’s telling of that best. I think it’s really brilliant to flavor it as a coming-of-age movie, pushing the audience to see themselves in Marie Antoinette. From the beginning, the movie is very self-centered, the camera clings to Marie Antoinette throughout her sheltered upbringing. In this way, you share the problems that are personal to Marie Antoinette, but, probably already have the cultural…

The only thing I didn’t like about this movie was that I wanted more of it. Especially after watching lost and translation I’ve had to learn a bit more about Sofia Coppolas film style, especially in the way that she built her plot and that there isn’t that harsh finish that we see in a lot of movies and especially after this, when I’ve grown a bit more to liking it. Obviously set designed character everything was absolutely beautiful, but it would definitely get a five if it was three hours longer.
