All those costumes, the wigs, the palaces, the jewels, Norma Shearer acting her heart out, Tyrone Power looking like that, and yet Robert Morley’s empathetic portrayal of King Louis XVI is what I’ll take away from this extraordinarily lavish production. This film is too long but there’s a lot to admire, and Morley is a revelation in his debut as the would-be locksmith turned reluctant royal.

I always hesitated to watch this because of the long runtime and never having seen a particularly glowing review of it, but I felt a responsibility to in the name of honoring Irving Thalberg’s life. This was the last project he worked on, and one of special importance to him, having wrestled it away for wife Norma Shearer from William Randolph Hearst who wanted it for Marion Davies. Thalberg died while this was in its early planning, and Norma Shearer didn’t even want to do it anymore, in fact she wanted to retire, but the studio had invested so much in the film that she was forced to stay. I think this is perhaps her best performance. It took me…

one thing about an MGM period piece? they’re going to be the most extravagant, over the top productions of all time filled with the best actors. this is genuinely one of the most beautiful movies i’ve ever watched—the production design is so opulent and the costumes??? i mean, adrian is one of the most celebrated costume designers of all time for a reason. but i think what got me the most was norma shearer’s acting. she was soooo insanely perfect in this and no offense to bette davis (i loved jezebel), but in my eyes, norma’s the winner of the best actress award of 1939!! like, why did she have me crying at the end? as if i didn’t know what happened to marie antoinette??? i’ve never had a chance to see her be such an emotional actress before and ughhh it hit

Norma Shearer stars in the title role in this historical drama exploring each stage of the infamously decadent queen’s life, with Tyrone Power, Robert Morley and John Barrymore making up the supporting cast. This was a passion project many years in the making for Shearer, and really works as a showcase for the star’s range, moving from frivolous young aristocrat to loving mother to browbeaten prisoner in a way that feels consistently believable throughout. She really manages to sell this whole arc her character goes through, bringing an enormous amount of empathy to this portrayal that gets behind some of the common stereotypes and cliches to explore a deceptively multifaceted person underneath. The notorious “let them eat cake” quote that’s…

This retelling of the life and death of France’s most infamous queen is overlong, plays fast and loose with historical accuracy, and pays short shrift to most of the characters—but Norma Shearer is incredibly charming as Marie Antoinette, and ably portrays both her fun, irresponsible girlishness and the weight of her grief as the world comes crashing down around her. The gowns are absolutely stunning too.

MGM busts the bank on enough sets and costumes to bedazzle twenty studio-made biopics. But this epic is an odd combination of bloated and trivial and as it drags on one can’t help but wonder if it wouldn’t be improved by some Siouxsie & the Banshees.

Having recently watched Sophia Coppola’s version of this historical saga with disappointment, I set out to see the 1938 original, which garnered four Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress and Best Actor. My oh my, what a significantly better picture this is than the 2006 remake. There’s romance, there’s humor, there’s intrigue and tension, there’s gallantry, and even though it was shot in black and white, there are lavish sets and opulent costumes and superb art direction, too. Norma Shearer plays the title role, with John Barrymore as King Louis XV and Robert Morley giving an Oscar-level debut performance as the milksop Louis XVI. Tyrone Power delivers, too, as Count Axel de Fersen, the Queen’s clandestine Swedish lover. The acting…

The 1938 version of Marie Antoinette is a mind bogglingly lavish and massive costume drama. The sets are enormous, the cast is expansive, the costumes and makeups and props and basically everything on screen is elaborate and detailed. MGM brought the full force of their “prestige” studio to bear and it really shows. Norma Shearer stars in the title role and she’s great. She really inhabits the ill-fated queen. Her husband Irving Thalberg had initiated the project but passed away before filming began, making Shearer’s performance even more impressive. With a two and a half hour runtime this could have been a slog, but the script is engaging and the direction by W.S. Van Dyke is exceptionally accomplished. The camera…

“You must learn to be worthy of your destiny.” Queen Norma Shearer. All hail (I’m pro-monarchy now). Opens with one of those extended orchestral overtures, so you know this is going to be a real, serious, period piece. Which it is, at 2 ½ hours long, plus an intermission in the middle, but still, it almost feels rushed at times. Understandably, there’s a lot of ground to cover, and we now know that these historical epics often work better as television mini-series’ than feature length films, but this is still a valiant effort and a tour de force in every conceivable “filmic” way: from costuming to direction to sets to sometimes self-serious, theatrical-style acting. As Garbo had her Queen Christina,…

Very long film. Tbh, it was hard to watch to the end, for some reason. However, the costumes are pretty and very well made for the time it was filmed in, I liked the music and characters have they own special charisma that no modern actors have (well, that’s literally the second quarter of the 20th century, no doubt the actors act differently compared to modern days). It’s not like I will re-watch this, but I’d highly recommend to watch it at least once, just for the interesting experience.

A dazzling production that boggles the eye even in black and white to this day, all of the finest of MGM artistry is on display here for this rather elegant and dramatically arresting portrait. It doesn’t even do too bad of a job with the history here, at least not half as bad as you’d expect Hollywood to make of it. Shearer goes from cloying, to lusty, to motherly and tragic and does a wonderful job. The Antoinette role is…

This lavish MGM historical drama is one of the most visually extravagant films of the 1930s. Directed by W.S. Van Dyke, Marie Antoinette turns the tragic story of the French queen into a glamorous yet emotionally melancholic epic. Norma Shearer gives a deeply sympathetic performance, portraying Marie as naïve, romantic, and increasingly trapped by politics and public hatred. The costumes and palace recreations are astonishing. MGM spared no expense in recreating Versailles, and every frame radiates luxury. Yet beneath the…

She is one of one and her looks are unreal. This is such a deeply moving film with so much emotion and care put into it. I torture myself with romance and it’s become a poison in my life that’s distorting my perception but I can’t stop.

This is an epic and heartbreaking film that tells the story of Marie Antoinette, following her through her arrival in France to her final days. Norma Shearer’s turn as Marie Antoinette is absolutely brilliant; she captures flawlessly every single phase of her life. “Marie Antoinette” unfolds like a carefully layered text where historiography, biography, and studio-era fantasy bleed into one another until they become indistinguishable. The film carries the imprint of Stefan Zweig’s “Bildnis eines mittleren Charakters” (Portrait of an Average Woman), yet it refuses to leave that concept intact. Zweig’s Marie Antoinette exists within a framework of limitation, shaped by a personality that never quite rises to the demands of history. His analysis has been very influential on the 20th century perception…

18th Century April DAY 6 I have a hard time believing that audiences would be as hostile towards the peasant revolutionaries as this film seems to want us to be this soon after the Great Depression, but perhaps the lavishness of these balls and palaces was simply irresistible. A funny, but not inaccurate, review from the time: “Marie Antoinette” is one of the historical-colossals where the pageant is actually secondary to a rather fresh story of love and personal tragedy, tied to history mainly through the costumes and sets. This is WAY better than I would’ve guessed given the cast and the subject matter. Yes, this is about as glossy of a tale of Marie Antoinette as you can possibly imagine (she’s basically getting the Joan of Arc treatment by the end of it), but Shearer is solid, as is Morley, and about the only thing that doesn’t work is the cascade of viperous random supporting stars trying to take her down (and Tyrone Power in a weird love triangle that doesn’t actually work by the end of it).

“One must suffer to be so beautiful.” I cannot believe this is 88 years old. The script, the music, the costume design- it’s all phenomenal. Sparkly fabric in black and white film looks so dreamy. I can’t remember the last time I cried so much at a movie.

I thought it was a good movie. It’s not an accurate historical movie but I found it entertaining. It did go hard into trying to get the audience to sympathize with her which is expected for a movie like this. Though it is sad seeing her towards the end I can’t help but think of all the poor people who died due to dire poverty with no one to make sorrowful movies of their untimely deaths. It’s a complicated topic…

When this film was made, it cost $2.9 million dollars. That’s the equivalent of $67 million today, which isn’t a lot by modern standards, but it was outrageous then. So expensive that they scrapped plans to film in technicolor and went with black and white. Which is a shame, because even though it still looks great, there was a lot of attention paid to the details of costuming and set design. Many of the costumes survive and are in museums.…

I cannot wear my crown upon my heart. Norma Shearer is the very picture of elegance and extravagance as Marie Antoinette. It is Shearer’s effortless expertise that makes Marie Antoinette a film to not simply remember but cherish. The way she saunters and sways in shimmering 18th century regalia is masterpiece itself. Poetry in motion! And Tyrone Power makes for an excellent match as Count Fersen—Power’s strength of recital convinced me of their quixotic love with ease. Marie Antoinette is glorious and picturesque—certainly worth rewatching.

A huge MGM production with lavish costumes and sets. Norma Shearer (Oscar nominated) brings contemporary energy to the role. I was expecting stuffy period costume drama and eventually it does become that as it covers decades of history in a nearly 3 hour runtime. Visually the feeling is breathtaking and it’s detail. the gowns, the palaces, the sheer extravagames of the production are undeniable. but unfortunately the movie is in black and white if only it had been shot in color the customes and set would have been more dazzling. Norma shearer dominates the screen as the queen Marie Antoinette, giving her a butt glamor and vulnerability. Tyrone power adds romantic flair as count Alex de fersen, while Robert Morley’s as Louis XVI is awkward yet oddly sympathetic, they created a melodrama that feels more like a Hollywood opera than a historical potrait

Synopsis
The young Austrian princess Marie Antoinette is arranged to marry Louis XVI, future king of France, in a politically advantageous marriage for the rival countries. The opulent Marie indulges in various whims and flirtations. When Louis XV passes and Louis XVI ascends the French throne, his queen's extravagant lifestyle earns the hatred of the French people, who despise her Austrian heritage.
